22 Jul How to Sew Linen Dinner Napkins
I confess to my growing fondness for creating posh napkins, and blame it all on the pandemic. If you follow my Instagram account, you know what I mean...

Greetings from the beautiful Wofford College campus! I grew up in a historic home on this campus where my father was Dean of Students, and both of my daughters are Wofford graduates. I'm quite at home popping over for an occasional pic, and always enjoy seeing campus developments. Right now the Colonnade of Wofford's new Greek Village is calling my name. No, I wasn't a sorority girl, but the classical architecture is a great setting for one of my favorite classics - the shift. I've sewn dozens of shifts and even though I vow to move on, I consistently return and sew yet another shift pattern. What...
A two-week beach vacation happens rarely, but I enjoyed every day and my sewing machine barely made an appearance. I missed you, Dear Readers! ____________________ The season of love is upon us and my first post vacation garment is a Rehearsal Dinner dress for a wedding this weekend in Atlanta. Visiting fabric stores is so rare for me these days, that when I do have the pleasure to touch and feel the real thing, I am like a child in a candy store. In March, I visited the Children's Corner Store in Nashville for all of 25 minutes. I was caught off guard...
I've always thought one of my greatest strengths is flexibility. It's a nebulous term for sure, but for me staying flexible includes the ability to change directions mid-course without becoming rattled. My flexible nature was put to the test during the past several days while constructing the latest - Last year I ordered an interesting and cheerful stretch cotton sateen from Promenade Fabrics. The store sent me a little extra due to the fabric design and my yardage request. I was somewhat overwhelmed by the fabric when it arrived but I loved it and made a simple skirt with the extra fabric (blogged...
It's raining, it's pouring and summer is almost over...
I've never been able to adopt the 'keep it simple' philosophy, but I do believe in the 'one step at a time' approach to life. In sewing that means sticking to the familiar while learning the new. While I try to grasp the details of machine embroidery I'm sewing with patterns and fabrics that leave no surprises. Mood Fabrics offers a fabulous collection of cotton shirtings, and what better backdrop for cherry red than a black and white check! I knew this smooth shirting fabric with a soft drape would be perfect for a tunic and kept my fingers crossed that it would be...
After seeing so many cute renditions of McCalls 7543, I could not let another summer day pass without sewing my own. An off-the-shoulder top with gathered shoulders and elastic pulled tight across the chest and back gives the appearance of nice clean lines, which I wear better than a full gather. The nice tight pull across the chest also prevents gaping. After finishing the experimental embroidered denim jacket I was ready to embroider for real ;) The printed fabric from EmmaOneSock is a lightweight linen with a nice background for an embroidery design. I settled on a floral motif the Pfaff Embroidery book...
I've been practicing my embroidery. After trying out two designs on muslin with no purpose other than to serve as practice examples, I went in to 'Just Do It' mode. I grabbed a very old denim jacket out of a closet and began to explore with the Pfaff embroidery designs which came with my machine. My plan was to sew whatever struck my fancy...
