27 Jun It’s Great to be Sewing Again!

It is impossible to pick up where I left off since I’ve been gone for so long, and there are no words to describe how happy I am to be back! Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you who checked in with me. 😘 My husband and I jumped on an opportunity to buy a smaller home in our neighborhood, and at last I’ve caught my breath.  Seizing the moment was the beginning of brutal purging, and cleaning out my sewing room was the most overwhelming of all. After the move I couldn’t face unpacking my...

30 Aug Nine Years & Counting! Butterick Pattern 6678

Here it is, my nine year Blogiversary! On August 31, 2011, I announced I would not be shopping for a year and vowed to renew my sewing skills. I made this skirt from Amy Butler quilting cotton which I posted as my first garment and was so proud. Nine years later I'm in a different place in life but one thing is certain. I'll never go back to being a full-time shopper unless someone takes my machines away or I'm unable to sew. Sewing is truly in my blood. _____________________________________________ People not connected with the online sewing community look puzzled when I explain this wonderful...

05 Aug Butterick Pattern 6669 View C

Green - the color of life, growth, renewal, harmony, nature, and energy. I think the world could use a little more green and so could I. I embraced the Clover Green Cotton Eyelet from B & J Fabrics, and turned to Butterick 6669 for a full silhouette maxi, a departure from my everyday sheaths and shifts.I recently finished the top included with this pattern (blogged here) and found the neckline flattering and the straps substantial...

10 Jun Garment # 16 Simplicity 1612

TGIF Dear Readers! Would you believe I never wore Maxis until I started sewing? I just finished my 'Weekend Maxi', perfect for leisurely Saturday strolls through markets and poolside afternoons. Here it is when I'm standing at attention. The pattern is Simplicity 1612 , a very easy sew with some pizzazz thanks to the cute details. I made View C which features a front twist, an open back and a flared skirt. What I love about this pattern besides the ease in which it is assembled, is the coverage of the bodice. The neckline is flattering and never gapes or slips open ~ ever. I...

29 Apr Happiness Is……..

..... a new puppy! Last weekend we welcomed beautiful little Lulu, a seven-week old English Cocker into our family. I decided to celebrate our little bundle of energy by making a dress in her honor, and why not? Pattern Reviewer extraordinaire, Cissie Wellons introduced me to Farmhouse Fabrics, in Beech Island, SC (birthplace of James Brown) through one of her entertaining reviews. The store offers a comprehensive online selection of fabrics, and I was smitten by the soft black linen with giant embroidered white polka dots! After receiving the fabric, I realized the dots ran lengthwise which meant I needed to cut the...

15 Jun Dare to Wear

When I started sewing again in August 2011, I vowed to wear my clothes in public. I’ve been true to my word with two exceptions - here and here. While a job well done should be reason enough to do one’s best, knowing that others will see (and judge) my clothes is one of the incentives to get it right. Hubby and I spent the weekend in Charleston, SC, where my daughter and her fiancé were honored with a party hosted by friends of the groom’s parents. I packed a Me-Made suitcase and hoped for the best.  Clockwise from the top left: The...

12 Jun Theory Striped Maxi

Once again, the spirits of Marcy the Medium have influenced my fabric selection! “You need more yellow in your life,” she stated. I think I ordered the best yellow a n y t h i n g  ever available, for Mood Fabrics' Theory Light Canary Striped Viscose Ponte Blend  has more than surpassed my expectations!  I wasn’t ready to put away the pattern from my last project (New Look 6210) quite yet - especially since the fit had been tweaked to perfection. Besides, I had set out to make a maxi and ended up with a short dress. The phenomenal drape of this fabric begged...
