Theory Striped Maxi

12 Jun Theory Striped Maxi

Once again, the spirits of Marcy the Medium have influenced my fabric selection!

“You need more yellow in your life,” she stated.

I think I ordered the best yellow a n y t h i n g  ever available, for Mood Fabrics’ Theory Light Canary Striped Viscose Ponte Blend  has more than surpassed my expectations!

Goodbye Valentino Mood Fabrics' Theory Canary Striped Viscose Ponte Blend www.goodbyevalentino.com   I wasn’t ready to put away the pattern from my last project (New Look 6210) quite yet – especially since the fit had been tweaked to perfection. Besides, I had set out to make a maxi and ended up with a short dress. The phenomenal drape of this fabric begged for a maxi and frankly, how could I resist?

theory

My only new alteration was to add an inch of fabric to the front lower armsyce for better coverage.

Goodbye Valentino Mood Fabrics' Theory Canary Striped Viscose Ponte Blend www.goodbyevalentino.com Since the fabric/pattern combination screams summer, I opted for the racer back rendition – a first for me.

Goodbye Valentino Mood Fabrics' Theory Canary Striped Viscose Ponte Blend www.goodbyevalentino.com What took four days to make last week took four hours to make this week, due in part to this beautifully behaved viscose ponte knit. No slipping, no sliding, no curling and it is perfectly on grain.

The article about you in the UK edition of “Sew Today” inspired me to sign for your blog and also follow your example regarding making rather than buying clothes for the next year.
I’m really looking forward to this exciting journey!
Thanks for the inspiration and I love what you make!

Hi Paula! You were one of the first to see it hot off the sewing machine! This is the best knit fabric ever and I hope you have great success with your Mood order. Many thanks for your comment and I’m delighted we have a mutual friend to keep us in touch with each other. 🙂

Wow, Sarah…the first thing that strikes me about this on you is the visual height that it adds. I’m glad you remembered Marcy’s advice- you glow in this color. Love the racer back, the side slit, the beautifully matched edge bands, all of it. I thought I was done with maxis for the season but since I realized that I have this pattern and a few likely fabrics, I definitely need one of these!

You look fabulous in yellow and this dress is no exception. Despite the horizontal stripes, this dress makes you look tall and slim. Beautifully sewn and super flattering on you.

Thank you, Jean! I think the narrow width of the stripes and the length of the dress work in my favor – but even so I was surprised how the visual length it created 🙂

Great dress! And though I absolutely love the viscose knits out of the box, I’ve had bad luck with them pilling with the first wash … they look old very fast. Any hints? The ones I’ve bought have NOT been cheap!

Thank you, Marybeth! I washed this fabric in the machine before cutting and there was zero pilling. I know exactly what you are talking about but it didn’t happen with this one 🙂

Lovely color. Mood also carries a Theory lightweight jersey in a solid yellow. Just received two full skirt patterns that may work for a long summer skirt. Mood recommends a self-lining for modesty.

Love your dress! Looks great on you! I love the fabric, and am wondering if this would be a good knit for the Amy knit top from Style Arc. (Which you inspired me to purchase)? I’ve not sewn with the “new” knits, and wondering if it’s problematic. Have done lots of sewing on cotton double knits, but none of the poly’s or viscose. A little skeptical I’m afraid. Have been viewing your blog for some time and enjoy it so much. I wished I would have joined the RTW Fast. You are a seamstress after my own heart.

Hi Barbara! Many thanks for your lovely comment. The fabric is fairly heavy and I was surprised at the lightweight fabric sample included with the Amy top pattern. I think it depends on the look you want, but I wouldn’t hesitate recommending buying the fabric because I’m sure you’ll find just the right pattern for it. 😉

Sarah – I LOVE this maxi, it is just perfect on you! (In fact – I loved it so much I placed my first order ever with Mood fabrics that same night after seeing your post, I was afraid your dress would cause the fabric to sell out!) I ordered 5 yards of the yellow stripe, it arrived last week and it is GORGEOUS! I am wondering though, how did you pre-wash it? I could not find any care instructions online, would love if you could share what temp you washed and dried it on, as I have never used this type knit before. Thanks so much!
