It’s Great to be Sewing Again!

27 Jun It’s Great to be Sewing Again!

It is impossible to pick up where I left off since I’ve been gone for so long, and there are no words to describe how happy I am to be back! Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you who checked in with me. 😘

My husband and I jumped on an opportunity to buy a smaller home in our neighborhood, and at last I’ve caught my breath.  Seizing the moment was the beginning of brutal purging, and cleaning out my sewing room was the most overwhelming of all. After the move I couldn’t face unpacking my sewing materials and they remained stored.

But reimagining a beautiful life in a downsized home led to a profusion of creative opportunities, and once I closed the sewing room door a new creativity emerged.

My love of colors, fabrics, textures, patterns, scale, proportion, nature and everyday aesthetics spread into all facets of my life.

Purging and an absence of sewing left me with a sparse collection of clothing and I began to shop sparingly. I’d like to say I re-entered the clothes shopping scene, a more savvy shopper, but I still found shopping to be hit and miss.

In May, I was caught by surprise when I glimpsed a view of a new Jude Connally dress from the rear.

I was so surprised that I pulled out the portable machine I keep at the beach and removed 8 inches of the dress plus the pockets.

Jude Connally clothing is so easy to wear and the fabrics with sun protection are the best, not to mention blue and white is my fav……… It was a very cute unreturnable dress I bought on sale, but of course if its not worn…… it’s a waste.

Cutting off the length and removing the pockets not only gave the ‘top’ new body and bounce like a good haircut, but the dress makeover turned out to be the impetus to re-enter my beloved world of sewing. 😊😊

All I could think about was returning home to sew a dress from the B&J seersucker I bought two years ago!

During the last eighteen months, The Real Real and Pinterest became my two of my best online friends 😊

I developed a system of browsing and shopping The Real Real website which made the experience a pleasure….. and an adventure!

I love the free flowing midis and maxis, but voluminous silhouettes swallow me and I proceed cautiously. In April I found a Brochu Walker Havanna Dress on TRR website which appeared to have a flattering fit, and it served as an inspiration for the seersucker dress.

I created a bodice block from Simplicity 8384 and tweaked the fit to the same measurements as the Havana Dress bodice.

Then I made three tiers for the skirt using the same dimensions as the dress.

I added a sash to provide detail and to compliment the heavier weight of the seersucker as compared with the Havana Dress’ lightweight poplin. Also the tiers on my dress do not have buttons.

I’m not wearing shoes because I’m still searching for the perfect pair…….

Sewing this dress piqued my interest in sewing with blocks and I admire the genius use of blocks by many favorite designers. (Oscar de la Renta being one.)

Using leftover fabric from this 2017 dress, I experimented with a yoke block created from an A-line skirt and combined it with two tiers of fabrics.

I’m wearing it with an old Lilly Pulitzer “Elsa” top, and my favorite Tuckenuck earrings. The skirt is clearly an experiment, and I want to tweak the width of the tiers.

It’s a joy to be here again, and I hope you’ll be with me once more to share this new chapter of life 😘

So glad you are back! I also closed my sewing room after my husband passed 3 years ago. I have been drawn back recently and I am trying to embrace the focus and creative energy it requires to sew your own clothes. I started with a simple t-shirt dress and decorative pillow covers for a friend. My sewing machine is starting to hum again and I am thankful for a new start. I was blessed with a sweet granddaughter this month, so pink may be my theme!

Here’s something that might inspire you as well as pink sewing – the Seeing Society kits from Guthrie and Ghani in the UK, plus her YouTubes. I’ve gotten a couple and so are in the Facebook group which is a hoot!😁😁

Such a welcomed surprise to see you back with all your inspiration and energy returning. We too downsized, but not in the same neighborhood. Moved from Bainbridge island to Port townsend Wa, and had a house built during Covid. Still recovering from the stress and exhaustion as well as the disorientation of being somewhere else after 20 years on the island. Gotta say, for the 2 years we rented, sewing kept me focussed and calm. Isolation was an adjustment and sewing kept me grounded. We love our new home and our neighborhood. Still get easily overwhelmed, and my 300 square foot studio is my goto sanctuary.. Just finished sewing New Look 6866 in a rayon crepe for our Goddaughter’s wedding in July.. Joined Closet Core Crew in January, and it feels great to be back connecting with a group of sewists making the same monthly “surprise” pattern in so many awesome versions. Always loved the RTW fasting community and this feels similar. I like it.

    Hi Sarah,
It’s easy to under-estimate the power of moving to derail your life, especially your sewing life. Adding in down-sizing doubles the derailment of your life! Still, paring down does make your choices fewer, which is good thing.

Kimberly, I think 98% of the fashion scene is geared to the 30 somethings and I have to remember so many fashion models are in their teens and early 20s. It’s hard and makes me appreciate the advantages of sewing.

Without so much stuff accumulated over a lifetime, it’s easier to only have simple, beautiful things with a fresh perspective.

Good to see you back Sarah. I did go onto the blog and reread some previous posts thinking you had dropped out of blogging. This pretty, coloured post has given me a lift in the depths of winter here. I have been knitting and completing some crochet work as I have two new granddaughters to join their older 5 year old brother. “Helping out” mummy and daddy has taken time plus our long ‘Covid lock downs’ inhibited my motivation. Welcome back. Sam the Aussie

Obviously I am not the only one who has missed you! Glad you are back. The midi seersucker dress is spectacular. I feel overwhelmed by the midi length being so short and small. I really should make me a skirt to try the style.

Posted at 13:47h, 29 June Reply

Many thanks, Sandy! I think the keys to not feeling overwhelmed by the tiered midis and maxi are 1 – a closer bodice silhouette 2 – avoiding gigantic prints. Also I think you have a little more control over the skirt. Go for it!

What a delight to see your blog alive again! It’s like a beautiful sunny day! I love how you stay true to your flattering clothing lines, and your elegant fabric choices. I still need to do the Swedish Death Cleaning (in lieu of downsizing) so that it removes that physical and mental burden of under-used STUFF that seems to take over. . “Is this worth the cubic feet?” I am relieved to hear you downsized and that you and your husband as well as your extended family are doing well. Your blogs bring bliss, thank you.

So good to see you pop back up on my reading list! I am delighted to see your new sewing projects. I envy you having done the downsizing, I know that’s in my future and I’m so not looking forward to it. First I have to retire my sewing business, and that’s going to be hard enough, but at least I’m closer to choosing a date for that to happen than I’ve ever been, with the crop of tough projects involving really complicated alterations that the 2023 prom and wedding season has brought me.

I am so so so glad you are still here, still sewing, and that your family is still intact and healthy. I feared the worst and didn’t want to be intrusive since this is YOUR blog and you get to do what you want to do but oh, I was afraid your husband had died or you had a stroke or any number of bad things.

I love your new creations; your taste and talent in finding the best fit and proportions is unmatched. It will be wonderful to see the ongoing productions. Did you keep your embroidery machine?

I would also appreciate a post on how you decided what to keep and what you wished adieu. After two years of incredible health issues and Minnesota winters, we are also looking at downsizing and it is terrifying.

Celeste ~ How your message speaks to me! I’m thrilled my husband didn’t die and that I didn’t have a stroke, and I’m sorry I worried readers. I was too overwhelmed with so many moving parts. I also understand the terrifying nature of downsizing. I was excited but my husband was apprehensive… now he thanks me everyday 😉

I plan to do a post or two on what made the cut. I kept the embroidery machine and truly appreciate your nice comment about my sewing. Many thanks 😘😘😘

I first saw you several years ago on PBS It’s Sew Easy. It was a wonderful segment and I have followed you since that time. I’m in awe of your style, how you change a pattern to make it yours and your sewing ability.

Can you recommend a website or book that would help me learn how to fit a pattern? It’s a constant struggle for me.

Thank you and Im happy to “see” you’re back at it again.

Thank you so much, Candace! I recommend a few things for fitting:
      Books:
      1. Sarah Veblen, The Complete Photo Guide to Perfect Fitting
      2. Sarah Veblen, First Time Garment Fitting

I would get a dress form. It doesn’t need to be expensive , but dress forms make fitting so much easier.

Make a Muslin before cutting your fashion fabric.
PS… I believe Sarah Veblen has online fitting classes.
      Good luck!
