16 Jan Marcy Tilton Leggings & A Notebook Giveaway
Many readers asked about the Marcy Tilton Leggings I was wearing in the last post. Believe it or not, they are the first pair of leggings I’ve sewn.
I bought several yards of a polyester two-way stretch fabric at Mood Fabrics in 2013, some of which I used it for the inserts in this dress in October. It seemed appropriate legging material and so in late November I started the pattern which I just recently finished.
If you are a Pattern Review Website reader, you know one of the review questions is – Does your garment look like the one in the pattern photograph?
Well, yes………. when I’m not wearing them.

While I do not wear leggings with a tucked in shirt and belt, I do like the overall fit of the Marcy Tilton leggings with a nice flat front. The back features a yoke for a smooth fit which is sewn with an elasticized waist. I wasn’t so sure about the elasticized waist but it is not bulky. I left off the pockets since I knew they would never be seen 🙂

The front leg instructions offer three detail options. I chose the double tucks at the knee. The back leg, is composed of two pieces providing added stability to the garment.
I made several alterations in November but I can’t remember what they are which brings me to this:
Had I owned this book sent to me from Beth Byrge, I could tell you all about the sewing process!
If your New Year’s Resolution is to become more organized, this is a book for you!

Beth has created A Sewists’ Notebook designed to eliminate the frustrations of disorganization many of us experience when sewing. Featured in Threads Magazine, on Lladybird, the Sewaholic blog, the Coletterie, Handmade Jane, and more, A Sewist’s Notebook will keep you organized and in turn, keep you focused on your sewing project.

The notebook features 110 numbered pages for projects. Most include a figure drawing for making sketches whenever inspiration strikes (there are 20 pages without a model so you can sketch handbags or children’s clothing). Notions and accents are pre-printed to quickly circle what is needed. Also included are blank lines to fill in the sizing notes, hems and finishes, etc….
In the back of the book are tables to catalogue patterns, a wish list page and a chart to track needle changes on your machine.
I’m ordering a copy for myself and giving this copy away to one lucky winner! Simply leave a comment to be included for the giveaway – the winner will be announced on Monday, January 19th and many thanks to Beth for the notebook!
Back to the leggings…….. now that they are finally finished, I like them and plan to sew another pair. But tell me, what is your favorite fabric for leggings? And how do you wear leggings? With a tucked in top? With heels? Flats? Boots?
I’m game for several different options, but plan to know the look I’m after before sewing my next pair 😉
Have a great weekend!

Posted at 18:21h, 16 JanuaryMy New Years resolution is to update my personal fashion style. I will be turning 60 this year. I am still trying to find my own way of wearing leggings that’s fresh, polished and well put together. So far the only way I wear leggings is with a long tunic top. I am very curvy, and would like to develop the confidence to wear leggings with a shorter top or jacket..

Posted at 11:02h, 17 Januaryi wear leggings often, with a tunic flats or boots– love the comfort and the look. Like the notebook, I always make notes, especially of stitches used in the project.

Posted at 04:48h, 18 JanuaryDo you think full figure lady’s can wear this pattern?
Mary Helen Crowe
Posted at 15:43h, 16 JanuaryI haven’t tried these but would now. I know Marcy calls them skinny pants but your description seems more accurate to me.

Posted at 15:43h, 16 JanuaryThe fabric looks perfect. We’re they hard to fit?

Posted at 15:45h, 16 JanuaryI’m now convinced on the pattern and the book! Genius.

Posted at 15:48h, 16 JanuaryI don’t wear leggings. Not a good look on me but they look nice on you.

Posted at 15:49h, 16 JanuarySimply Fabulous!!!

Posted at 15:50h, 16 JanuaryI like leggings, but only under long tops or short dresses. I don’t think they’re a good look for anyone with a shirt tucked in – especially if you are not stick thin. But these are super cute. And I love the book! Awesome idea.

Posted at 15:51h, 16 JanuaryI love the leggings! Ii plan to order the pattern and think the notebook is genius!

Posted at 15:53h, 16 JanuaryI love leggings and wear them with long shirts, sweaters, and tunics. I don’t tuck anything in! I got hooked on them when I had hand surgery last year–had to wear a cast and couldn’t fasten/zip up my jeans or pants! These look great on you, And I love the notebook, what a great idea!
Joan
Posted at 15:53h, 16 JanuaryI like these leggings. Personally, I like the thickness and recovery of a good ponte for leggings—who needs to see the lumps and bumps?!

Posted at 15:54h, 16 JanuaryLeggings looks good on you — a good fit

Posted at 15:54h, 16 JanuaryI love the leggings and wear them with boots and flats, and typically more of an oversize top instead of something that you would tuck in. The notebook is perfect to get organized and remember tips from each project!
Anna O'Day
Posted at 15:54h, 16 JanuaryThey look great. Maybe I will make some. I have…uh….well shaped backside. Finding leggings that don’t pull down in the back is a problem. They’re great in the winter because I can be both comfortable and stylish. Although I still love my unstylish sweat pants and sweat shirts!
Alice Elliot
Posted at 19:30h, 17 JanuaryThis pattern with the back yoke should be perfect for an alteration to address your need for more coverage in the back. The Tilton sisters make patterns for real women, not models.

Posted at 15:55h, 16 JanuaryI have yet to make leggings maybe your post will give me the impetus to do so. Organization is not a strong point for me, perhaps a book like this would help.

Posted at 15:59h, 16 JanuaryI like to wear leggings like you. With a top that is a bit oversized and not ticked in

Posted at 15:59h, 16 JanuaryI like a nice medium weight ponte. The thinner knits highlight the bumpier parts of my middle age body!

Posted at 16:00h, 16 JanuaryWhen I saw the last post referring to these “leggings”, I immediately had to google the pattern. Being a friend and big fan of Marcy, I thought I knew every pattern she has created and didn’t remember there being any leggings. When I saw the pattern, I said, “Oh, THOSE pants.” I have made this pattern three times, all out of a stretch cotton, two off Marcy’s website. (Here are my three blog posts if your readers would like to see the result with a bottom weight fabric. – http://jancrews.com/tag/pants/) It’s a great pattern and very easy. I encourage your readers to try the pattern – either as skinny pants or leggings. It’s great!
Ana Sullivan
Posted at 16:02h, 16 JanuaryI think of leggings as thicker tights. I would only wear if the top is longer than the long.
Judith Freeman Clark
Posted at 16:02h, 16 JanuarySarah, thank you so much for your every encouraging and inspiring post!
Leggings… hmmm….. Well, in my next life, I hope to be 5′ 7″ tall and weigh in at 135 lbs.
Maybe then I might look like the model on the pattern envelope.
Currently, I am deficient in the height, and the less said about weight, the better.
Although I am generally well-organized, I would love to own a copy of the notebook. What a clever, useful idea!
Ruth Duling
Posted at 16:03h, 16 JanuaryThat book is a great idea. It is surprising nobody thought of it earlier. Will have to see about getting a copy. The leggings look great on you, although I am not a legging wearer myself.

Posted at 16:09h, 16 JanuaryYou look great! I really like your style. The MOB dress you made last year was wonderful!
I don’t usually wear leggings.
Would you please put my name into your drawing.

Posted at 16:09h, 16 JanuaryI’ve made this pattern many times using a knit such as ponte as well as stretch wovens. Love them all and wear them all the time with tunics and/or long jackets. Yours look great. I would love to win this book.
Jonelle Bellis
Posted at 16:10h, 16 JanuaryI like to use ponte for leggings. Try Sandra Betzina’s puzzle pants too. I have made both patterns and love them both.

Posted at 16:13h, 16 JanuaryI wear leggings with a tunic style top as becomes my age! I haven’t made a pair yet, but I do like the look of the pattern you chose as it elevated the leggings from cheap to chic IMHO.
I usually try to write on the front of the pattern jacket what size I used, how it was modified, etc., but a book would be even better. Thanks for your blog…….I try to make as much as possible these days rather than RTW and I appreciate the encouragement. I live in the south also and find my taste in fashion corresponds well with yours.

Posted at 16:20h, 16 JanuaryYou look great wearing anything….however I think most women 50+ look better with their bums covered while wearing leggings…think tunic top.. I too would like to make leggings as my last 2 pair were $100 each…but where to find the fabric?
The fabric of the leggings that I love is quite heavy 95% Nylon and 5% Elasthane (whatever that is)…not clingy at all.
When I make a pattern I take a 3 x 5 index card…..staple a piece of the fabric that was used…and add my notes. I put it in with the pattern so I know what I made and any changes. Not as fancy as the book but very helpful to the ageing brain!
I enjoy your blog.

Posted at 16:20h, 16 JanuaryHi there. I’ve been a long time lurker, er … follower. The animal silk shirt is TDF and if you should tire of it, I’d gladly accept. I might take a second look a MT’s leggings as I like the unusual design features and seem dressier than your standard leggings. As for the book, I love it! I ordered one last year, then my friend spied it during one of her visits. So I gifted it to her as part of her holiday package. She’s just learning to sew and I give her suggestions about valuable tools to use to make the process more enjoyable. This notebook was one of those suggestions. She loves it! Please toss my name into the hat for this generous giveaway.

Posted at 16:21h, 16 JanuaryLove the leggings! I dream of making such well-fitting garments one day. My mom gave me a similar notebook for knitting as a Christmas gift, and I immediately thought how nice a sewing version would be for figuring out my projects better. Practice practice practice!
Laurel Wilson
Posted at 16:21h, 16 JanuaryThe notebook would enable me to keep track of the fabric and patterns I collected while dreaming that I would sew again after I retired. Well, I am retired and sewing!!
I love your blog and am glad you are still posting even though you might indulge in some RTW every now and then.

Posted at 16:22h, 16 JanuarySarah, please can you explain 2 way stretch – does this mean it stretches both ways [up/ down and left/right] or is that 4 way stretch?

Posted at 16:23h, 16 JanuaryYour leggings look great on you. I have not tried any yet but I see them being worn with a tunic and boots. Definitely not with a shirt tucked in! Not on this body!
Nana
Posted at 16:23h, 16 JanuaryI have not worn leggings but think that I will make some soon to wear with my boots. I love the book idea. I have tried to create a spreadsheet to handle those type notes. But ,without some checklist and notions options, I usually do not do a good job of being able to refer back and accomplish the same fit.

Posted at 16:23h, 16 JanuaryGreat idea for a book! Great way to “try” to stay organized!
Love the leggings too. It so great to see patterns made up. I like them better on you than the pattern envelope!

Posted at 16:25h, 16 JanuaryPlease include me in the book give away…keeping notes on finished garments is an important part of sewing. *And one I do not do!*
Love the leggings,

Posted at 16:27h, 16 JanuaryI would love to make leggings and am interested to see which fabric everyone uses. I think leggings and a tunic are easy to wear and look more pulled together than sweat pants and sweat shirt.
The book sounds like something I could really use!

Posted at 16:27h, 16 JanuaryI like the leggings with the boots…that is such a classy look!
Claire
Posted at 16:31h, 16 JanuaryThese look great–very flattering and versatile! I think you have styled them perfectly and I am sure you will get lots of wear out of them. Funny to see you post this, as I also just made leggings this week out of black 2-way ponte from Mood. 😉 I copied an old J. Crew pair with an exposed zipper in the back and equestrian-style inset. Please throw my name in for the drawing. I can always use more organization!
Marybeth Tawfik
Posted at 16:33h, 16 JanuaryYours look EXACTLY like the model’s if not better!
This is so much nicer than my usual plan, which is to scribble all over the pattern envelope and instructions.

Posted at 16:33h, 16 JanuaryI am going to check out this pattern to see if I can make it in plus size …. not for every day wear as you have them, but would be great for my yoga and Zumba class. Does anyone know of a wicking fabric for leggings? Also I have a pair of Talbots’ polar fleece pants which this pattern reminds me of – those are great in the single digit temperatures we get here in South Carolina. Mine are black and with the thickness of the polar fleece, I don’t mind wearing them with a long top (although I generally just wear them around the house). I am not a fan of polar fleece in general but for cold weather, they are wonderful!! And the book is a great idea! I hope that I win one so I can keep track of my sewing this year.

Posted at 16:34h, 16 JanuaryI bought my first pair of leggings just a couple months ago and I love them ! Should be easy to make and I can’t wait to try!
Rebecca Trittel
Posted at 16:35h, 16 JanuaryI haven’t worn leggings in years! When I did wear them, I usually tucked them into jeans and ALWAYS had a long shirt/tunic on top. I much prefer yoga pants with a bit of flair at the bottom to balance my top-heavy figure. Thanks for the chance to win the organizing book – I need all the organizational help I can find!!

Posted at 16:37h, 16 JanuaryWell, I have recently lost 60 pounds and my aim is to loose 50 more. Maybe then I will be able to wear leggings. You, however, are beautiful in a paper sack! They look wonderful on you. You are such a great inspiration. Thank you for that. The book looks wonderful too. If I should not be selected the winner, I plan to order a copy.

Posted at 16:40h, 16 JanuaryI am wanting to make a pair of leggings to wear tucked into boots with a long enough shirt to cover my 50 year old curves :). I would love to win this book as I am a very organized person who actually geeks out on organizational books like this one!

Posted at 16:42h, 16 JanuaryLove the look of your leggings. They are cute on the pattern but even cuter on you! I’ll be adding this one to my pattern shopping list. I wonder if Mood still has this fabric.

Posted at 16:44h, 16 JanuaryYour leggings look great on you-more like slim trousers? The only place I wear legging is at the gym as I really don’t have the legs for them. The notebook looks great 🙂 I have a rough book I keep notes in, but this would make me much more organised.

Posted at 16:46h, 16 JanuaryLeggings material: I used heavy cotton/spandex knit for riding tights — pull-on, shaping around the knee, even added a knee patch. Easy to pull on, very inexpensive compared to ready made.

Posted at 16:47h, 16 JanuaryI love the leggings! I’ve made two pairs and have fabric for a third. The first pair was made out of a stretch denim purchased at JoAnn’s – love these! The second was a polyester blend in an off white – not a fan. What was I thinking? leggings in off white are not flattering at my age/ size. My leggings – in – waiting are a ponte from marcy’s site. There on the cutting table for this weekend’s sewing project.

Posted at 17:03h, 16 JanuaryAfter seeing your last post I decided to order the Marci Tilton legging pattern. I have never worn leggings before and I’m short and a bit of a pooch in front. But may give it a try with a looong shirt! That notebook would be great! After decades of sewing I now wish I had kept things recorded along with pictures. Now I take a picture of my projects but having details recorded is a terrific idea!

Posted at 17:05h, 16 JanuaryI’m not sure I have the body type for leggings , but they look great on you !!!!

Posted at 17:07h, 16 JanuaryI don’t tuck in with leggings, preferring them with loose tops and boots in the winter. Usually, I use ponte for them but made a pair out of scuba knit which is a great fabric for legggings as the recovery is so good.
Hope I win that notebook since I believe I am most in need of organizational help!!!

Posted at 17:09h, 16 JanuaryYour leggings/skinny pants look great. I like wearing leggings with a longer top – so comfortable. I’ve unofficially joined (as in haven’t told anyone) the RTW fasters this year and I’m awash in fabric and patterns with more ideas spinning through my head than stripes on a zebra. Your giveaway notebook would be a huge resource in corralling and keeping track of things.

Posted at 17:15h, 16 JanuaryI haven’t attempted to sew leggings, but seeing your’s, which look so good, I will now give them a try. I’m also in need of better organising my sewing, the book would be perfect. At the moment I usuall add a note into the packet of my patterns, trouble is I usually misplace it…

Donna
Posted at 17:22h, 16 JanuaryI wear my leggings under tunic length tops, with either my ankle boots or my tall riding boots. I have used a thicker knit fabric, always making sure there is some lycra in the textile mix. I was very curious about this Marcy Tilton patter, so thank you for showing it in your blog. I’m hoping I win the journal since I currently use a binder to try and keep my sewing notes, and it’s pretty disorganized. Enjoy your day. Donna

Posted at 17:23h, 16 JanuaryThese look super comfortable! I’m like the many who have written already – I’d wear these only under a tunic or short dress. The notebook sounds perfect! My daughter and I were sewing the other day and she was trying to remember alterations she had done to a pattern this summer. She had completely altered a pattern to her size and made a muslin but the PDF pattern had such poor directions she had trouble remembering some of the steps she took and didn’t write anything down. Good note-keeping habits can never start too young and it’s never too late to begin.

Posted at 17:40h, 16 JanuaryGreat job, Sara — your leggings are very flattering on you. I think they look best with sportier shoe styles or equestrian-derived (your boots look is perfect).
I ONLY wear leggings with untucked tops, but not necessarily ones that fall below the hips, as I am shorter than you at 5’1″! I only make sure to cover my tummy — my trouble spot — as my bottom and hips aren’t my worry area.
Re. fabric for leggings: definitely those with lycra, to avoid bagging at the knee and to allow multiple wearings between washes. I like pontes, but the recovery factor varies a lot in ponte. I personally avoid 100% synthetics, as I run HOT these days and if you sit on a non-breathable surface, it is uncomfortable ;-}
I am a big note-taker and the sewing notebook looks terrific!
Jo-Anne
Posted at 17:42h, 16 JanuaryWhat great leggings! I have been hesitant to make the leap from skinny pants to leggings, but your project has inspired me! I AM going to be more organized in my sewing this year. I am going to sew the endless chain way–only sewing pieces that already have something to go with them in my wardrobe. No pressure of deadlines, just guaranteed results that it won” languish in my closet as an orphan!

Posted at 17:43h, 16 JanuaryI made these as well, they were a bit short waisted for me so will alter second pair and I made them out of JoAnns high end Ponte knit. I wear mine with short flat 1.5″ heel boots bottoms out over boot or tucked in high boots as you have. they are a nice detailed pair of leggings. Will make again, yours look great btw as do all your creations.

Posted at 17:43h, 16 JanuaryI really like this pattern! I secretly try to channel Audrey Hepburn when I wear dark wash leggings with flats and a cape breton striped top. Sometimes I will tuck them into boots too!
The sewing notebook is a brilliant idea. I have a plain lined notebook, but it’s a bit of a mess, as I scribble notes about what I’m sewing as they come up. To have an organized page would be so helpful!

Posted at 17:46h, 16 JanuaryThese exact pants are my latest make! I tested them on stretch denim (1-way stretch) from Beverly’s. According to the size chart I am an 18, but my pattern only graded up to size 16. I added the extra width on the side seams only, and cut the size 14 crotch.. After trying them on, I angled in the center back from above the pocket line to the waist, and ended up taking more than an inch of the sides, I learned that for next time I should cut the size 14. Immediately I made notes on the back of the pattern, but having a sewing journal to write down all the notes and details would make alterations and notes more convenient and organized.

Have never used a pattern but hope to get the courage soon
Looking for encouragement

Posted at 17:57h, 16 JanuaryI really like the leggings and will have to try this pattern. I find the leg widths many pants patterns not narrow enough, but this seems to be narrow. I would try to make them with that new scuba fabric maybe, as it has stretch and a thicker stability. I have never made a pair, but I usually where them with flats and ankle boots, sometimes with knee boots, but at 62 I think it might look a little off. I am not 95 lbs anymore! The notebook is fantastic. I sometimes jot notes and drop them in the pattern when I am done, but this would be so much more efficient. It will definitely go on my wish list!

Posted at 17:58h, 16 JanuaryWhat a great idea for a book(I usually just use sticky notes that inevitably end up getting lost or thrown out)!! As far as the leggings, I like wearing them with flats or boots but prefer them to really hug the leg- not really a fan of “loose” leggings. I agree with the notion of knowing what look you are going for before the start of a project. For me it helps to visual the project so I don’t end up with a wadder.

Posted at 18:00h, 16 JanuaryI love leggings with a longer top and flats. That book looks like the ultimate organizing tool for any sewer!

Posted at 18:10h, 16 JanuaryI like ponte or benga line for leggings.. I always wear tops over them and always wear flats, whether boots, brogues or loafers.
Love the red top you are wearing with the leggings tell us about it. The whole outfit looks terrific.

Posted at 18:10h, 16 JanuaryI loved how your leggings turned out. I think I’ll give the Marcy Tilton Vogue pattern you used a spin since I’ve never made leggings but love them. I think a ponte knit might work really well since ponte has body and doesn’t cling. I never wear the tops tucked in when wearing leggings. What I especially like is that leggings can be worn with a wide variety of tops for either casual or even dressier occasions . I’ve worn them in Vail with boots and long sweaters and I’ve worn them in the tropics (where I live) with silk blouses and heels. I think they confer the wearer with a long, lean, leggy look. My favorite leggings are ones I purchased in Madrid a year ago at a store called Punto Roma. They were so reasonably priced and fit so beautifully, I bought a pair in almost every color! I hope I like the ones I make as well as I do those since I am dying for a pair of white and a pair of khaki leggings.

Posted at 18:14h, 16 JanuaryI wear them with a tunic and heeled booties.
I’ve been recording my notes in a spiral notebook for years; generally, because I’m forgetful and live by lists. 🙂

Posted at 18:28h, 16 JanuaryI am 53 and 5’7″. At my age, I prefer thicker leggings (almost like jeggings) vs. the “tights” kind. I like long tops that cover all off my private areas because I think some things should be left to the imagination! I wear mine with booties, flats and tucked into boots. Your leggings look fabulous.

Posted at 18:29h, 16 JanuaryI have wanted one since Beth first introduced this notebook! I have used a general notebook but it’s not as organized or attractive.
Your leggings look great. My husband calls them tights but I think these would qualify for pants!

Posted at 18:32h, 16 JanuaryHey, Sarah. I wear leggings with flats. Not yet brave enough to make my own.

Posted at 18:37h, 16 JanuaryYou are always so stylish! Love the leggings pattern. So far I have only made one pair of leggings and I wear them to exercise in so the shirt is always out not tucked in.

Posted at 18:48h, 16 JanuaryThe leggings look great. I like to wear them with flats and boots mainly. Heels only if I have a very long top on … The project book looks like just the thing to keep organized and on track when it is a ‘while’ between unfinished projects.

Posted at 18:49h, 16 JanuaryI love your leggings and they are on my to do list as well. I only wear mine with longer tops,
remembering the construction of a garment is sometimes difficult so the notebook looks like it would be very helpful. I would love a copy!

Posted at 18:50h, 16 JanuaryI love leggings with boots- with flats I debate the whole socks/shoes thing!
The sewing notebook is great- the only time I have been disciplined enough to make notes was doing Nutcracker costumes!

Posted at 18:50h, 16 JanuaryLeggings are something I want to try sewing this year. I love your version! I have a beefy stretch rayon blend well aged in my stash that might just work. It has some spandex or Lycra. I like to wear my purchased leggings with a longer top and a short knit skirt a little above the kne in the same dark or similar colors.

Posted at 18:51h, 16 JanuaryI have made a pair of leggings out of a crazy floral and animal print thin knit fabric that I wear with a Doe and Deer Plantain tee for lounging at home. I tend to wear skinny jeans more than leggings, but I’d like to make a pair of ponte leggings. I’d love to get my sewing projects more organized.

Posted at 19:17h, 16 JanuaryPlease enter my name for the Organizer Notebook. Boy, do I need one. I sometimes have two or three projects in the works and I mix up what adjustments I made to each pattern by the time they are finished. This would be a lifesaver.
Thanks, Shelby

Posted at 19:28h, 16 JanuaryI made leggings years ago and loved them with a few long shirts I had made. Then I gained weight!
Seeing these, (they’ve got a great look to them) makes me want to really lose the weight so that I can wear things like this again and feel good in them 😀
I’m inspired!
You always fill my head with new ideas for projects! Lol

Posted at 19:35h, 16 JanuaryI bought the Sewists Notebook when I began to sew clothing in early 2013, and cherish what has become a complete record of 49 projects, so far. In addition to filling in the blanks in the notebook, I include the dates I worked on the project, a star rating, and a small swatch of the fabrics used. Not only is it a useful reference, I love going through it to see how far I have come. I find the “Notes for next time” portion helps me to learn from my mistakes.

Posted at 19:52h, 16 JanuaryYou look great in the leggings. I have just recently gotten my first pair of leggings. ( I thought I was too old.(58) but my daughters convinced me otherwise.) I really liked them but like you, I want a top to cover up the upper half of them. I would never do a tucked in top. I love reading your sewing information. I only wish I was half the seamstress that you are. I would love to win the notebook giveaway. I am forever making notes about my sewing and then I lose the notes. Keep on sewing and writing about it . It’s great!

Posted at 19:56h, 16 JanuaryI have never worn leggings. I think they look alright on other people though. I would love to be considered for the book give-away. Thanks

Posted at 19:56h, 16 JanuaryI love leggings – haven’t made Marcy’s yet, but did make a similar pair by Sandra Bertzina. I like natural fabrics – polyester is too hot. I try to find cotton and/or rayon with spandex or lycra.

Posted at 20:01h, 16 JanuaryA good post…I always wondered about MArci’s leggings, especiaaly with seam at the knee. Only wear leggings with a long or full top, never tucked in, and always with a snappy flat such as animal print, or with an insigna on the front of shoe. You know snappy casual !

Posted at 20:17h, 16 JanuaryLiked that pattern, and fabric choice was a 4 way stretch ponte from Eileen Fisher purchased from EmmaOneSock.com. It’s lounge wear comfortable and I love them. Also made them in a heavy white ponte with a high spandex content that never bags out.. I did not make up the knee detail in either pair.

Posted at 20:25h, 16 JanuaryLeggings are great! I wear them with dresses and as fancy long underwear with jeans during these cold winter months. I use cotton spandex so they will breathe and wick away moisture. I’m saving up for some merino leggings so I’ll never be cold again! 🙂
Thanks for a wonderful giveaway! I’m so excited about this book!

Posted at 20:28h, 16 JanuaryI’ve never made leggings, even for the kids. I do like them, though it’s definitely a new thing for me!
I wear leggings, true leggings in knit, in two ways ONLY…. for sleeping/cleaning the house in or for working out at the gym. Both ways involve very long, sloppy tees. LOL
I LOVE my skinny JEANS though, and that’s DEFINITELY my new favorite thing! I wear tunic length, empire waist tops with some body too them (to cover up some of MY body!) or tunic length sweaters and BOOTS! Boots is what made skinnies palatable for me… For the first time in my LIFE, I’ve lost enough weight to wear tall boots. So of course, I’m wearing them Every, Single. Day. I’m going to HATE when warm weather gets here. 🙁
But I did get told I look fairly good in them, I have decent legs courtesy lots of dance and flag corp (part of marching band) as a child/teen. Plus carrying around a lot of weight gives you good leg muscles anyway. 🙂 So I’m told that when spring gets here, I should just cuff them some and swap to short/ 3/4 sleeve tee tunics. 🙂
I’m game.
And I’ll continue to rotate my leggings (cotton with spandex for a more cottony/thicker legging but still snug and good recovery) with my yoga pants (also preferring my old handy cotton/spandex blend ones–wish I could find more like them! They’re like a HEAVY tee shirt with lots of spandex! So nice!) for walking on the treadmill along side my hubby as he runs so we can both get in better shape.
That book would be GENIUS! I NEVER EVER follow a pattern exactly unless I’m testing it… that would be an excellent record for exactly WHAT changes I made each time!

Posted at 20:32h, 16 JanuaryLove the leggings! I plan to make a pair out of some ponte I bought from Marcy Tilton. The notebook is such a great idea. I have used a ruled notebook for my knitting but this one is much nicer. Great way to organize and remember alterations that were made. Please enter me in the drawing. Happy sewing!

Posted at 20:38h, 16 JanuaryThose are great leggings, but I agree with you about the pockets. Nobody is going to see my stomach while wearing leggings, so overblouses it is. I use Style Arc’s patterns almost exclusively and I’ve never seen you blog about them. Maybe I missed it, but if not, you should give them a try. Would like to try the notebook, it might keep me organized…

Posted at 20:44h, 16 JanuarySarah, glad to see you’re sewing again. I was also thrilled to see that you performed again back in December. Don’t ever let go of that part of who you are. Love these leggings, as well as the over-sized blouse you made. I have the MT leggings pattern . . . may need to give it a go. I’m still working on the dress from the Houston class. Hope to finish it soon, but I keep letting other projects knock it out of line. Happy New Year to you and enjoy the ride, whether it be music or sewing. How blessed we are!!!

Posted at 21:00h, 16 JanuaryLove it. I just recently started wearing leggings and will only wear with a long tunic or sweater. I have seen people wear leggings WRONG for so long I was completely turned off from making or wearing them. I love the notebook. I keep sewing notes in a blank notebook. but its so messy when I need to find something. I would love to have a well organized notebook like this.

Posted at 21:06h, 16 JanuaryI have never worn or made leggings, my daughters do…but now I’m thinking I will! Gonna order this pattern & will leave off the back pockets just as you have. Have a nice piece of fabric that I bought for a dress, but I’d get more versatility from the leggings. Thanks for the idea!

Posted at 21:41h, 16 JanuaryI have to confess I haven’t to date worn leggings, other than Under Armour under my trousers when playing golf in the frost! I never used to find them to fit my long legs and now I feel I’m too heavy. My daughters wear them – I think with boots or flats. Not tucked in. I like the idea of the Sewist’s notebook, so, yes please, enter me in the draw.

Posted at 22:32h, 16 JanuaryI love leggings. I’m most likely to wear them in a casual way with a tunic, long relaxed tee, or the like, in which case I’d wear them with flats or tennies. When I dress them up more it’s usually a flowy sheer top with cami and high heels.
Tuck in? No. Nothing. Never.

Posted at 23:19h, 16 JanuaryI’d never worn leggings in my life until a few weeks ago. They don’t have pockets (usually) and are very close fitting. However, I’ve discovered that they’re very comfortable for me with a long knit top or sweater.

Posted at 23:24h, 16 JanuaryThe leggings pattern looks like a good way to go. My imagination of what leggings w/tucked in tops would look like prevents me from wearing them with anything but a tunic or long sweater. I will need to broaden my thinking, perhaps.

Posted at 23:33h, 16 JanuarySarah, Your leggings look terrific, and frankly, I love the whole outfit you put together with them. The pattern you used has been my TNT since I made my first pair exactly a year ago. during the RTW Fast They were literally the first pair of pants/leggings that fit right out of the envelope. I have only made them as skinny pants. If I were to use them as leggings, I would need to take in the side and inseam – which I may do on the one ponte knit pair I made. The other two are out of stretch woven fabrics. The first pair I made, I did add the knee tucks, and they work,, but on the stretch woven pants, I removed them from the pattern, taping the pieces together to make both the front and back one piece. Never thought I would love pull-up pants, but these work great. i am making a 4th pair this week. BTW. I get lots of compliments on the stretch woven pants.

Posted at 23:52h, 16 JanuaryLOVE those leggings. Never made a pair with tucks at the knee, but they will be my next project. I make and wear alot of leggings, Recently finished a black lyrca pair, calf length, to wear under a very full pleated print skirt. Paired with 3/4 sleeve black ballet top, vintage jewelry & wide brim hat. All the “girls” at the tea party loved it! Stole the whole look from a vintage CHARM magazine that I happened to have stashed in my sewing room. I LOVE sewing!

Posted at 23:56h, 16 JanuaryI work at a large Insurance company in Wisconsin (where it’s cold) and women of all ages wear leggings with flats, low heels, or especially low or over the calf boots. Everyone wears tunics or dresses over them, or tunics with a longer jacket as well. I don’t think the look of tight leggings with any top that does not cover one’s bottom is appropriate — even on teenage girls. Just my opinion, but they are not pants.

Posted at 00:48h, 17 JanuarySarah love the leggings and the notebook would be great to record all those projects! My favourite pattern for leggings is the Cake pattern – easy to input your measurements and then muslin to tweak the fit. But I have seen a few people in love with the Marcy Tilton ones so might give them a try.

Posted at 04:12h, 17 JanuaryI have leggings in bamboo and Lycra and love them! But to make them? That’s scary! I wear them the same way you do – with flats or tall boots, never heels.
As for a book? I’ve got all my notes about pattern changes and adaptations on pieces of paper scattered all over the place, but with a firm commitment from myself to start entering them into a notebook so I won’t lose them! That’s my New Year’s resolution anyway, but until then I will just keep trying to remember all of. Y alterations!!

Posted at 05:21h, 17 JanuaryYour leggings look great! I haven’t tried leggings yet. I am not sure if they would look good on me. I prefer yoga pants and have made those. I have a binder full of pages copied from an original I thought up with pattern No,, fabric, etc. all sorts of notes on it. I do admire this book though. It would be more sturdy than the pages in my binder, which are getting worn out!

Posted at 06:24h, 17 JanuaryI’ve never sewn leggings for myself.mi think it may be that I’ve just not found the right pattern. However, those Marcy ones are appealing; mainly because of the detail at the knee.
I typically wear leggings under tunics. I prefer that look best.

Posted at 09:22h, 17 JanuaryI’d like to make the leggings in stretch denim which I think would make them jeggings? I’d wear them with the overshirt I am currently working on, which could be belted or not depending on your shape. They could also be made in stretch velvet for an evening option. I find your blog very inspirational, so thank you for sharing your sewing ideas.
Love the book idea too.

Posted at 11:31h, 17 JanuaryI like cotton jersey knit for my leggings. And I like the fit to be tight – not baggy. Usually wear them with skirts and boots. Your leggings look like more of a pant, which is also nice. Thanks for all the great tips!

Posted at 12:30h, 17 JanuaryPeggy,
This pattern is more of a pant which I failed to state (because I didn’t have a notebook and began the pattern several weeks ago 🙂 ) I tapered several inches out of the leg circumference to get more of a legging effect.

Posted at 11:39h, 17 JanuaryI have tried this pattern and loved it. Like you, I left the pockets off because I rarely use back pockets. Personally I like a thicker knit when sewing leggings as I worry that they might be see-through. Thanks for the post.

Posted at 11:51h, 17 JanuaryLove the leggings you made. In response to your questions regarding how and what to wear with leggings – I believe it depends on several factors such as the person’s height, weight and age not to mention confidence level. Generally speaking – I feel leggings look best with a tunic or longer type top/blouse versus a short top/blouse or something tucked in. I really like the look of leggings combined with a long style top with a turtle neck. Regarding high heels – I don’t like this look with leggings unless the person wears socks etc. that match the shoe and legging so the eye flows and the same would be the case with flat shoes – either can look great with leggings. I also like the look of leggings with a short ankle boot but I don’t like leggings with taller boots.
BTW – enjoy your blog and your excellent ideas along with your top notch sewing skills and insight.
BTW – I would also like to submit my name for consideration for the book to help organize my sewing projects – especially given the fact my memory doesn’t seem to be improving with age like wine.

Posted at 12:11h, 17 JanuaryI wear leggings with short dresses and boots. No tucked in tops for me! I haven’t tried to make leggings yet, but plan to soon. I might have to get this pattern for a different look. I would love to win the notebook; it is so much nicer than my little spiral notebook!

Posted at 12:13h, 17 JanuaryI love a good leg game… And these look really good on you! I especially love, that now you can incorporate them into your work attire as well (cannot believe that it’s now allowed!). Now we can be comfortable, while being office appropriate! It must’ve been a woman who made this decision! LOL! Either way you look great and yours!

Posted at 12:53h, 17 JanuaryLove the book! Such a smart idea, it is a wonder someone had not made one sooner. As for leggings/skinny pants I have not made the leap yet, but after seeing yours I might give them a try.

Posted at 13:03h, 17 JanuaryThe leggings look great on you. And the notebook is a great idea. I think I’ll work up a Word template so I can copy and paste a picture of the pattern, my notes and a picture of me in the finished garment, then print and put in a 3 ring binder

Posted at 13:33h, 17 JanuaryYes, leggings have become the workhorse of my cold weather wear, as long as they are paired with a top that covers my backside and sewn from a good beefy knit with nice recovery. I live by the adage “leggings are not pants”. Love, love the cute tucks at the knees on yours and I’m pretty sure I have this pattern here somewhere. I usually depend on my pattern reviews as a record of my projects but not all are posted so this book would be a real boon to better record keeping. Thanks for sharing!

Posted at 13:51h, 17 JanuaryLeggins are around-the-house wear, almost like more respectable daytime pajamas during the weekend or when I come home from work. Until, of course, as Judith Clark says, I come back tall and skinny! I’ve seen this pattern, but thinking of the result as leggings rather than pants makes me want to give them a try.
Love the sewing notebook idea!

Posted at 13:52h, 17 JanuaryTuck in? Perhaps a camisole, but I don’t step out of the house if my leggings aren’t covered by something to mid-thigh (my favorite is an elongated version of Vogue 8793). Haven’t tried making my own leggings, though. Yours look fab.

Posted at 14:07h, 17 JanuaryI teach all levels of fashion construction to high schoolers, this semester I am having them keep a Fashion Notebook with terminology, information about fabrics (weave types, knits, and such). To include the details of each of their projects is brilliant! A sewists notebook for myself would be great, haven’t tried making my own leggings yet, they are a post holiday wardrobe essential, if you know what I mean…

Posted at 14:14h, 17 JanuaryI’ve sewn this Marcy T pattern a couple times and refer to them as skinny pants as they aren’t as small as leggings IMHO. I wear them with tunics and never a tucked in top reserving that for only those with super flat tummies! Your rendition look very smart and the book looks like a great idea.

Posted at 14:39h, 17 JanuaryYou are completely correct, Karen. They are more of a skinny pant. I tapered several inches out of the leg to give them more of a legging effect. 🙂

Posted at 14:15h, 17 JanuaryLove your leggings. My favorite leggings were purchased from a store that is no longer in business. They are a heavier weight, keep their shape after hours of wearing, and wash and dry like a dream. The fabric is: 69% rayon, 26% nylon, and 5% spandex. I have not tried to locate a fabric such as this, as I purchased three pairs of these leggings before the store closed. Good luck on your next pair of leggings. It is great to see you back as you were missed.
Would love to win the book……I do need to get organized. Your blog has inspired me to sew for myself. Have spent years sewing for home, granddaughter, family, etc. Thanks!

Posted at 14:18h, 17 JanuaryI have that leggings pattern and was wondering which option to choose. I’ll do what you did. I also don’t add pockets to my pants because it just adds extra bulk — and who needs extra bulk around the mid-section? The notebook is a great idea. Then one could refer back to any little tips and tricks they did on specific garments if they want to do up the pattern again.

Posted at 15:14h, 17 JanuaryLove those leggings on you. I live in yoga pants and have never found leggings that I liked. Perhaps sewing some would be just the ticket because I would need to make some severe adjustments due to the big difference between my hip and waist measurement. The book would be a great addition to help with that process too. Love your blog!

Posted at 16:04h, 17 JanuaryI refer to these as skinny pants, not leggings (or tights or jeggings etc) as they are really a narrow pant. They can be made with very little ease, or, depending on the fabric with more ease. I must have 12 pair in different weight fabrics. Knits like ponte are a natural, but I make them in stretch woven fabrics too. For stretch wovens, I add a 2″ seam allowance at the side seam, and an additional 1″ at the waistline, then adjust these seams in fitting. For cool weather I make them in lighter weight stretch cottons and crop the length. When the pattern was released, I did a blog on the pattern: http://marcytiltonblog.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

Posted at 16:50h, 17 JanuaryHad looked at this pattern before, but now am convinced I ended to try it! At my age I feel better in a pant style legging.
The book is great! Glad I got on here before Monday !

Posted at 17:04h, 17 JanuaryI love your blog and all the explanations and pictures you provide on how you use each pattern! Leggings are something I never would have thought of trying – until now! The notebook is a wonderful idea and way to organize all my wayward notes would love to be included in the drawing.

Posted at 17:52h, 17 JanuaryGoals for 2015 include sewing myself (and granddaughters) leggings and skinny pants. Wearing them is another goal 🙂

Posted at 18:13h, 17 Januaryi love them, skinny pants are better than the tight leggings. Need to order the pattern. The sewing journal is a great idea and will make it easier to remember key parts of the sewing process.

Posted at 18:14h, 17 JanuaryThose leggings are fabulous. I love the pink tuck detail — makes them so much more interesting. That book is just what I need, trying to capture what I did or was thinking at the time of the garment’s construction. Thanks so much for sharing. You are always an inspiration!

Posted at 18:41h, 17 JanuaryYou look really good in those leggings! I wore them a lot last summer with mid-thigh length tunics and summer sandals and I am definitely converted. They cover up the bits you are reluctant to show off when you are over 60, as I am! I would love to win your very generous giveaway as I am planning to sew a travel capsule wardrobe this year.

Posted at 18:49h, 17 JanuaryI have wanted to make some leggings but have been afraid of how they would look on me. I love Marcy’s patterns and have several so this would be a great one to try.

Posted at 19:24h, 17 JanuaryI love the idea of a sewing notebook. It would be nice to have all ideas, measurements, wish list, etc. In on book. I hope to buy the leggings Vogue pattern soon, also.

Posted at 19:28h, 17 JanuaryI love those leggings! I wear leggings almost every day because I’m hooked on comfort and they’re so much more comfy than skinny jeans! I wear them with a top that just covers my bottom, Usually wear sneakers, babysitting a 1-year-old grandson precludes boots or high heels! I have made many Marcy Tilton patterns and own some K. Tilton patterns that I’ve yet to use. One for some neat leggings. I prefer a thick-ish ponte with lots of lycra.

Posted at 21:26h, 17 JanuaryThank you for the reminder of this great pattern. So far, my favorite fabric is ponte. This season I plan to try a stretch denim. As far as footwear – nothing is off limits. Well, I learned this week that if I choose boots the pants must not be baggy in any area. I like the record book you referred to and see a reason to use it – so many projects and not enough memory. 🙂

Posted at 21:49h, 17 JanuaryI was on the fence about this pattern for a long time. I’m not a big fan of leggings in general, probably because far too many people here in SoCal wear them as pants, which shouldn’t be done by the majority of them. But I think I’d wear these now (without narrowing them as you did), so I’ll add that to my list for when Vogue goes on sale this month.
And that notebook is pure genius!

Posted at 21:54h, 17 JanuaryI have that pattern, but I’ve never made it up. Your post makes me want to make them in 5 different colors! And then the comment by Marcy Tilton helps a lot.
And yes, please. Enter me for the give away. I can see how helpful and useful that notebook will be.

Posted at 22:18h, 17 JanuaryLove the leggings and the notebook. I could sure use the organization of the notebook. I’m forever forgetting what alterations I made or what fabric I intended for a specific project. I guess the latter problem comes from too much fabric in the stash. LOL!
I might try making the leggings myself. It’s not so easy to find appropriate fabric but I do have some heavy weight knit St. John that might work. I would never wear them with a tucked shirt but love them with a tunic length top and boots or sandals (heels).
Thanks for the great blog. I love to learn from other great sewists!

Posted at 22:56h, 17 JanuaryI have the skinny pants pattern but haven’t made them yet. Maybe I will now! And the notebook sounds good.

Posted at 23:52h, 17 JanuaryI don’t often wear leggings outside the house. I would love a copy of that book, as long I remember to complete it for each project it will be so helpful when I go back to reuse pattern. If I don’t win I’m going to buy a copy.

Posted at 00:18h, 18 JanuaryThis pattern is not a true legging, it is a skinny pant. Leggings fit to your shape….think of them as a footless tight. These have a bit more room so they are skinnies. Leggings are not pants, they are not to be worn as pants, they are a layering piece to be worn under a dress or tunic. You are not supposed to tuck in a shirt or wear them with a short top. Skinnies can be worn like you would wear any tight jean. I have both leggings and skinnies….my substantial fabric leggings are so comfy but I feel more pulled together wearing skinnies. I always wear tunic cut tops with all my clothing so that’s no problem for me. Love the Tipton sisters style!

Posted at 00:24h, 18 JanuaryI tend to wear leggings all the time but they are so comfortable. This year though, I am hoping to build a balance and dress up some more so we’ll see. The book seems amazing and a great tool to have. I’ve been looking for something along these lines to organize and plan my sewing along with planning my blog. So far, I’ve had some difficulty but will keep trying. This book would be something very helpful for me to achieve my sewing goals for 2015 so I really hope to win. Thank you for the giveaway!

Posted at 09:41h, 18 JanuaryThese look amazing, I would wear them with a longer shirt or tunic and flats or flat boots and a scarf. That notebook is genius!! The 19th is my birthday, and I’m most definitely in need of more organisation in my life.

Posted at 12:45h, 18 JanuaryWow, lots of comments! Well, if you see this one: I *love* leggings. I’d wear them every day if I could, they are so comfortable. I use McCall’s M6173 pattern for mine, modified to fit my body exactly — it’s a very easy pattern to modify because it’s one piece. It works best with light to mid weight ITY fabrics, which are cheap and plentiful. Not sure what kind of fabric I’d use for these Tilton=style leggings …. anyway, how do I wear mine? With casual tops and tees, never tucked in, and any casual shoe: sandals, sneakers, boots, etc. I also have a few pairs of fancy leggings, I’ve worn those with heels and dressy-casual tops (untucked). Glad you like your leggings so much, and good luck with your new notebook! I do not want to be entered in the drawing. 🙂

Posted at 14:06h, 18 JanuaryI love leggings, but only wear them with long tops. my days of tucking in my shirts are over! I would love to win the book, I should have been this doing all along.

Posted at 16:39h, 18 Januaryi am 66 and 5’3″ and I make most all of Tilton’s tops because we must have a similar torso shape. they fit right out of the envelope. I compete a lot in two sports and I am often told by strangers and aquaintence how tasteful I look, that if they could buy these articles, they would like to dress similarly, the young working class and especially the mature, heavier ladies. I like the heavier Ponte leggings because making the leggings coordinate to your top color makes you look smaller and taller. I love a tunic well fitted thru the bust but dressier so you look ready for any office visit or new site. I just started my grand daughter on classifying and categorizing her notes on her sewing and art projects on the computer w pics . This notebook is an easy organization tool where you could see at a ready glance what progress you have made w different techniques and fabric tips. Love it. Enjoy your video tips!

Posted at 06:05h, 19 JanuaryYou’ve inspired me again – thank you!
When I wear leggings or my “new” skinny jeans (what Levi’s is calling their wider legged skinny jeans for us mature women), I choose long tops, tunics, and cardigans. I think 99% of women, no matter their age, look better with their rear ends covered when it comes to knits.
I’d LOVE a book that helps organize my sewing notes!

Posted at 14:12h, 19 JanuaryI love the leggings! I am tall and never feel the ones I buy in the store are long enough. Alo I like your fabric, it looks thicker thus covering dimples and pantie lines perhaps. I’m a new reader to your blog and I have really enjoyed going back through many of your entries. Also I’d love the notebook, a brilliant idea indeed.
