23 Mar Kate Spade/Simplicity 7715
You may already know how much I love Kate Spade clothes although I don’t own a single Kate Spade garment. One of the dresses I’ve admired over the years is the Aubrey Wrap Dress, which Kate Spade introduces in new fabrics every season.
Whether or not I can recreate this dress remains to be seen but I’m trying.
In November, Tracy kindly introduced me to this vintage Simplicity 7715 pattern when I was contemplating evening gown patterns. Three months later, after losing the e-Bay bid Tracy discovered, I found it on Etsy – even in my size!

Not only is the pattern very similar to the Kate Spade Aubrey dress, but another one of my favorite dress designers, Annebelle LaRoque of LaRoque seems to use a similar pattern as well for daytime and evening wear.
I’m working on the dress in this fabric,
a silk I found at Mary Jo’s a couple of years ago at a great price.
So far so good but I’ve have lots of work ahead of me. Unlike the Aubrey dress, the Simplicity pattern does not have the sleeve ruffle, and I doubt I’ll add it on this go around.
While searching for the pattern I discovered what great vintage patterns are available especially from the 60s! So many reminded me of my favorite childhood TV show – THAT GIRL featuring Marlo Thomas. I watched every episode just to see her cute clothes.
Hopefully I can complete my first Aubrey wrap-inspired dress over the weekend saving nearly $400. From time to time I come across articles discussing whether or not sewing is “worth it”……………………. 🙂

Posted at 08:47h, 23 MarchOooh, that blue and white fabric is beautiful! I can’t wait to see your completed dress. “That Girl” was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid too. I used to want to grow my hair long so that I could muss it up like Ann did when the show was coming on. My sweet hubby bought me the first two seasons of the show on DVD a few years ago. I love to watch them when I need sewing inspiration. I like the first season much more because the clothing style was changing so much in the second. She wore too many loose, flowy, pieces. I love the fitted suits and dresses from Season 1 the best.

Posted at 09:01h, 23 MarchWhat a perfect pattern match! I can’t wait to see your finished dress. I bet your silk fabric will give much more of the effect of the Kate Spade dress than the stiffer fabric in the vintage pattern photograph.

I finished second in the Red Dress contest and I was very flattered. The winner deserved to win – her dress was beautifully made 🙂
