05 Nov Guest Post from So Sew Simple & the Marcy Tilton Giveaway Winner!

I still find it hard to believe that nearly 400 lovely women joined me for the 2014 Ready-to-Wear Fast!

In January, I created a ‘Secret’ Facebook page for the RTW Fasters. The lively news feed which features all things sewing has served as a source of support and encouragement during the year, and has created a spirit of camaraderie among the group. Now in month 11, the RTW Fasters have sewn quite a collection of garments. Equally as important, they are approaching a huge achievement which extends beyond their new clothes.
Today, I’m pleased to introduce Denise from the blog  So Sew Simple.
Denise has made some great garments this year and even plans to continue the RTW Fast through 2015 🙂 Read on…..

This is my first year to join the Ready To Wear Fast. When I read about it about this time last year I KNEW it was something I wanted to be a part of during 2014. So far, I have yet to purchase any new clothing.

There are several things that participation in the RTW Fast has done for my sewing:
1 –  the more I sew, the more I improve. That would make sense but it’s important to put into practice.
2 – I have been able to really challenge myself. I have made things that I only thought about before, but became a necessity since I wasn’t buying anything.

This Vogue coat (8933) was the first necessity.

Denise

3 – I also find that I make faster decisions since I can’t wait forever to figure out what to make.
Another of my favorite parts about the fast has been the stash-busting aspect. I have used material I’ve had for years just because I needed to make something. Of course, I have bought plenty more too!
Initially I was concerned about some upcoming events I had (my son’s college graduation, in particular) and my inability to buy jeans (what would I do if I needed a new pair?), but with greater confidence, I just got to work and made what I needed. These are just some of my favorites:

While it’s not always easy to forego shopping, it has been well worth it. My confidence in my sewing ability has grown, and I’ve sewn so many items that I now have enough clothes to put together as outfits. I have learned and used new techniques that I’ve never tried before. And the community of sewers is amazing – always encouraging and helpful.

Denise 4The only thing I haven’t done yet that I plan to make is athletic wear. And this whole experience has made me look into other aspects of creativity. For example, although accessories are allowed, I am looking for some good material to use to make scarves for myself (have you seen the price of scarves lately?!).

This is definitely something I look forward to continuing in the new year!

Denise, I cannot believe how your three discoveries over the year as an RTW faster are EXACTLY my experience too. Yep, sewing things I never thought I would out of necessity is on my achievement list too. I also want to continue into next year because the benefit from the groups comments and encouragement are so helpful and appreciated. Excellent blog post!

Beautiful clothes Denise! I haven’t FORMALLY joined the group in that I have not been posting my creations and I came across this concept when it was already under way but I have to say that I have not bought anything other than underwear in the last year – all my new clothes are made by me and I too have found that my skills have improved immensely. I love getting compliments from my family, friends and colleagues on my outfits and I am even looking to purchase a new sewing machine this year. I am currently making handbags for Christmas presents. I love sewing and I will be continuing my rtw fast in 2015. You go ladies!

I would love to join the FAST in 2015. I am still thinking about it. It seems overwhelming presently; but also I can see it to be so rewarding….

This post epitomises the RTW fast for me. So interesting to see how Denise’s approach to sewing has changed and how her confidence has grown through the year (both if which mirror how I feel I’ve changed – I’m glad to be in such good company!). I recently left Facebook and the one thing I miss is the RTW group – maybe I’ll rejoin just for that! Thank you for continuing to inspire me Sarah. Rachel (P.S. I love the new blog layout – I’ve been offline for a wee while and it a great surprise to come back to!)

I am ready for the RTW fast 2015. I only started blogging a year ago and wasn’t sure where this was headed, but as a trial I have “fasted”! I only bought one sweater this year. I can’t knit (won’t knit) and only just discovered a perfect knit fabric to sew. I also bought a t shirt and yoga pants from a Superstore I stopped at while traveling. I dumped a cup of coffee on myself in the car and needed new clothes! I don’t really like the fit of the yoga pants! Are those good excuses? I love seeing what others have made and look forward to seeing even more! Thanks!

Yay! Now there are at least two of us. I have been shopping. ……but also sewing from Vogue patterns and Marcy Tilton fabrics. ….. and making lots of Alabama Chanin clothing. ……It is hand sewing and I find it very restful. So even though I have shopped a lot I am ready to give it up and use more of my patterns and fabric that I already have. I just needed this “challenge” to make it happen!

Agree with you, Denise, about scarves. The trouble is I have never seen the same type of fabric available to buy that the RTW makes its scarves from. I love the very fine, very soft versions. If only the fabric was easy to buy they would be so simple to finish off.

    Hi.
I am a huge fan of your blog. It has inspired me to learn to sew. I was looking for a way to email you privately but couldn’t find it. Your new site is beautiful but the load time is not and links from pattern review result in dead pages. I also have weird big black patches on most of your pages (on an ipad). I am not a tech person but do internet marketing for a living so can point you in the right direction of people who can help. The user experience right now is not what it used to be and it would be a shame if you are losing views because of the long load times. Anything I can do to help, please feel free to reach out.

    Best,
    Suzy.
