10 Sep Four Good Excuses and an Announcement
Four Reasons I Haven’t Sewn Since the end of August:
- My new Grandson was born (August 28). His name is Billy and he is healthy and beautiful ❤️

- I had a back injury (September 1). While pulling my kayak out of wet sand, the strap broke and sent me sailing across the beach before landing on my back.
- I’ve been out of town (September 6 – 9 ) …….. Let’s talk about this!
The Social Side of Sewing…………….
Since sewing is predominantly a solo activity, I find sewcializing with women who share my passion to be a great source of renewal.
This past weekend Julie Starr and I had the pleasure of spending three days in the Dallas/Plano area at the invitation of the Plano ASG Chapter. The initial weekend trip was planned well in advance, but after a large group of sewists from the Dallas/Plano area joined the 2018 RTW Fast, we were invited to come a day earlier for a RTW Faster meetup. How cool is that?
Below we are pictured with some of the RTW Fasters from the area.
Sewists understand one another for sure, but the greatest pleasure was listening to these women talk about the personal friendships they had made through the RTW Fast, as well as sharing their RTW Fasting experiences. I was very moved to say the least!
That first night of sewcializing was fulfilling in and of itself, but there’s more……

The second day featured a Trunk Show of our favorite makes followed by a presentation. (We don’t travel lightly 😉) We were flattered to learn the Friday evening event was sold out.
Saturday we hosted a Tunic Bible Workshop with 22 participants.
Following are my takeaways from this lovely trip…..
- It is always an honor to be invited for a personal appearance by an organization, but more importantly I am reminded there is something of ourselves that we leave at every meeting with another person, and of course it is a two way street.
with Plano ASG president Sheryl Belson and Events Chairman, Marie Barrese.
- Seek out a local ASG Chapter!! The members of each American Sewing Guild Chapter I have visited have so much fun together! In addition to the spirit of camaraderie, ASG Chapters provide excellent opportunities to grow, develop skills and give back to a community. The Plano Chapter has it going on and is composed of welcoming, talented women of varying skill levels along with a diverse membership. There is not an ASG Chapter in my city so I am a member at large.

- Incredible fabric stores still exist! As I’ve mentioned before, I live in what was once the textile capital of the United States. Today, there are no independent fashion fabric stores here. Two of our events were presented at Fabrique, a beautiful, large and well stocked fabric store with a helpful, knowledgable and caring staff. The store sorely reminded me of what I am missing.
We also visited Tissu Dallas, a small fabric boutique offering high end designer fabrics, accompanied by an Atelier.
No bargains but unlimited temptations!
- Utopias are for real!
Come When You Can, Leave When You Must!
The Tunic Bible Workshop took place at The Best Little Retreat Center in Texas. The owners created a one of a kind retreat getaway for sewists and other hobbyists to bring creative ideas to life. The venue is ideal for sewing, quilting, scrapbooking and other crafts offering a beautiful atmosphere, great lighting and many amenities. You can reserve a workspace for a day, take a class or schedule a retreat. I’ve never seen this concept realized on such a large and comprehensive basis before, but no one does large better than Texas!
4. In closing is the fourth reason I haven’t sewn since the end of August.
Julie and I recently signed another book contract with C&T Publishing!
It’s all very exciting but we’ve been absorbed in the writing portion. I hope to be back on the sewing plan soon . Until we get closer to publication date, we’ve been asked not to discuss the subject of the book, and we look forward to sharing details once we get the green light!
As always, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support in countless areas! The Tunic Bible has been a great success thanks to you as has goodbyevalentino.com ~ Dear Readers, you’ve transformed my sewing and well pretty much my life 😜
Many thanks for everything and stay tuned!

Posted at 12:04h, 10 SeptemberCongratulations on the new grandson! Aren’t grandchildren fun? Also, congratulations to you and Julie on the new book deal. I can’t wait to see what is coming next. You two are so talented. Looks like a fun time in Texas!

Posted at 12:06h, 10 SeptemberYour first excuse is absolutely adorable. You didn’t really need to come up with any more. Hope your back does not give you problems down the line.

Posted at 12:12h, 10 SeptemberSarah, this may have transformed your life, but think of the lives you have transformed and of the impact on sewing in general that you have had! The sewing community owes you, and Julie, for inspiration and for bringing folks together. Needless to say, I heartily second your admonition to join a local ASG chapter–the inspiration and camaraderie you receive when you have face-to-face communication is priceless. It transformed my life when I moved to Nashville, giving me a built-in group of friends. Online is great, no doubt, but in person is wonderful!
Congrats on the new grandson! What fun in your future.

Posted at 07:52h, 11 SeptemberSuch a nice comment, Rita 🤗 As I said – it’s a two way street, I’m honored to be part of such an inspiring and giving community!

Posted at 12:14h, 10 SeptemberCongratulations on the new grandson AND the book! And I hope you heal well and quickly.
Sarah, you were the speaker at the first ASG event I attended (here in Atlanta), and your story made an indelible impression on me and spurred me to get serious about investing my time and energy into making things for me instead of spending my weekends trolling the mall.
Thanks for mentioning ASG because without it my sewing journey would be pretty solitary. I love the online sewing community but there are times when it sure is nice to sit down with a sewing friend!

Posted at 07:55h, 11 SeptemberJanine ~ Thank you! Atlanta was the first time I spoke to an ASG group and I remember not being sure of exactly what to say! I’m really pleased to know you were inspired. Sometimes all it takes is sharing a personal story. I was impressed by the size of the Atlanta group and it was a great introduction to ASG. 😊

Posted at 12:19h, 10 SeptemberCongratulations on ALL of your exciting news (and deep sympathy for the back injury)!
I have made several tunics, and I improve the fit with each. My shoulders turn out to be pretty broad for a woman. I’m not complaining – I like my broad shoulders – but I have been struggling to fit them perfectly. Maybe when you come to Denver I will be in town and able to take a clinic from you all!
Finally, I’m pretty interested in those two Chanel-style suits on your mannequins. I don’t think I have read about Chanel suits on your blog. Did I just miss it?
Again, congratulations!

Posted at 07:57h, 11 SeptemberWe would love to come to Denver sometime…………. Julie made the French jackets and they are stunning. I made one 4 – 5 years ago, but she makes one every January. Many thanks for your comment, Alex!

Posted at 12:24h, 10 SeptemberWhat a beautiful family photo; thank you for sharing your joy. I am so sorry about the back injury, although relieved for you in that it did not seem to impact negatively on your Texas trip. Hopefully that was not just you putting on a brave face. The upcoming book sounds most interesting, all the best in your newest collaboration.

I haven’t been to either of those shops in Texas, but on my next trip through I will make sure to visit. As a small fabric shop owner myself I believe we must support one another. Please keep us informed of your next book. I have enjoyed sharing The Tunic Bible with my friends and students! M

Posted at 17:18h, 11 SeptemberHi Suzanne! Yes I do wear tunics. Some of the tunics sewn for The Tunic Bible were to demonstrate certain styles and techniques, but I have a large collection that I wear on a regular basis. As a matter of fact, I’m wearing one today 😉

Posted at 22:59h, 10 SeptemberYes, There is an ASG neighborhood group in the Charleston Area. We are part of the Central Savannah River Chapter. This chapter covers from Hilton Head to Myrtle Beach west to Aiken and Columbia SC. We are a very active chapter even though we cover such a large geographic area.

My mother was also born August 28, and passed away two years ago just shy of her 94th birthday, still living in her own house and of sound mind, with a large and loving family. I wish your grandson the same good and long life that goes with that birthday!

Posted at 10:44h, 11 SeptemberCongratulations…on so many fronts…especially on the birth of your new grandson! Just a quick question…I have no local place to purchase fabric for garments…can you recommend some online sources you use? I’m hesitant to buy online since I like to feel the fabric…but at this point I have no other option. Looking forward to your new book…thanks for your help!
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 17:37h, 11 SeptemberMaureen,
I know how you feel, but online ordering is becoming very common. I would start with Mood Fabrics and order a few swatches before purchasing 😉. You’ll soon be comfortable with the process. Many thanks for your comment.
