Vogue 8833

20 Aug Vogue 8833

I often think my Fall wardrobe is practically non-existent – most likely because I look like I’m coming down with something when I wear those traditional, Fall earth-tone colors. Fortunately the Pantone Fall 2013 report brings new colors to the mix translating into exciting possibilities for my closet!

My first Fall sewing project needed to be a go-to garment. Being a lover of silk, I ordered this crepe de chine from Mood Fabrics by Thakoon – the gorgeous colors enhance every pair of pants I own!

IMG_0807

True, the fabric would make a beautiful special occasion garment, but I’ll feel special each time this luxurious silk touches my skin, which should be often.

The pattern, Vogue 8833 is one I tried last year yielding less than stellar results due to my fabric choice (quilting cotton) and the addition of a ruffle.

V8833 -2

No ruffle this time!

I followed the instructions from start to finish, sewing a collar and collar band.

IMG_0774

The pattern is sewn with princess seams which easily fit my shape – no adjustments other than length,

but it required topstitching everywhere – cuffs, collar, collar band, front facing and hem! The busy print was my friend as I stitched slowly and carefully. This top might be one of my best sewn garments technique-wise.

But back to my excitement about Fall 2013. In addition to the new bright colors I’m seeing everywhere, I love the mixing of prints! I think this fabric will mix well with tweeds, small animal prints and more as I look forward to a color-filled fall!

Lastly, many thanks to everyone who commented on my previous tunic post. I appreciate the helpful suggestions and constructive criticism so much! Surely my next tunic will be perfect 🙂

Until soon!

I hope this pattern is still in print. Ebay and Etsy are getting a lot of business from me when I have to find an OOP pattern that you have used. This looks wonderful on you and truly your colors; . however, I wonder if you can wear certain shades of rust.

What a great top and what a wonderful fabric! I think a woman never can have too many tops in the closet, they renew really effectively all “old” skirts and pants.
The colors fits you very well and, as always, it´s very well sewn. You must also be very fast producing so many nice garments so often.
It´s really exciting and inspiring to read your blog.

Oh I am so happy to see Fall colors much more suited to my “summer” coloring. As much as I love fall colors, the majority do not love me. I get the updates from Pantone but then never seem to find those colors locally. I guess I need to travel to Mood, or G Street. The fabric you chose is gorgeous, as is the print and I, too, can see it working with tweeds and similar fabrics. It is always nice when something we make works with a lot of things already in our closet. This looks so nice on you.

Beautiful as always! This wrap style looks good on you…flatters that tiny waist of yours!! Wanted to mention that your madras dress is exactly the same style as a Lilly Pulitzer dress this season. So you were right in giving it the full preppy treatment. Any winter coats in the future?

WOW!!!! This particular deep rosy pink, borderline fuchsia pink, of the pants is a PERFECT shade on you! I love that this pretty top picks up that color and complimentary shades and would look spectacular with black, brown, and white or slightly off-white slacks, shorts and skirts as well. What a perfect top to tie together your wardrobe, including for short trips where you don’t want to pack a lot. The neckline is devastatingly flattering, and the longer sleeve takes it into cooler weather and early Spring as well. Beautiful fitting job as always!

Most of all, I love that you’re fearless in trying all sorts of fabrics and different scales of the fabric’s pattern, from small and sedate to big, bold, and stunning.

I just found your blog today through Sis Boom. Oh my gosh…I’m so excited and motivated!!! I have a question for you though. I have been a quilter and sewn easy skirts and things for years but have never attempted altering or drafting my own patterns. What would be your first recommendation for someone that can sew but wants to kick it up to your level? You, as well as your projects, are gorgeous and classy and truly an inspiration. Will be up late tonight reading all of your blog posts and am following you of facebook. Thanks for sharing your talents.

      Hi Cindy!
Thank you so much for your comment! You sound like me before I seriously started sewing clothes. I think their are several ways to kick it up a notch without creating high stress and anxiety. If you already sew easy skirts, you might want to try a skirt in a more expensive fabric and give it the royal treatment with lining and even underlining.
Craftsy.com offers dozens of sewing classes which I highly recommend!
I also recommend checking out patterns on the Pattern Review website to see what others are making and to read honest reviews of the pattern.
You are going to have fun!!!! Good luck and stay in touch!

Yes, you may certainly say youthful! Now I need a dozen 🙂 I wish I looked good in anything but it’s not true – I think the key is knowing what I can wear.
      Many thanks, Sue!

Thank you so much, Kristen! The pants are the first garment I bought after completing my RTW fast. They are Lilly Pulitzer. After abstaining from buying clothes for a year I knew where the gaps were in my wardrobe and where my clothing dollars would be spent wisely……. as in a pair of hot pink pants! I never would have bought these before 🙂
