Promenade Fine Fabrics

18 Feb Promenade Fine Fabrics

iusb_760x100.15762612_gzpoToday I am profiling a fabric store that is supporting the 2018 RTW Fasters with a generous $100 giveaway.

If Mood Fabrics is the King of fabrics stores, then Promenade Fine Fabrics, is surely the Queen.

Located in the heart of New Orleans, this family owned business offers fine fabrics from around the world, including Irish linens, Italian and English wools, French, Swiss and Asian silks, French laces, brocades and much more.
Promenade Fine FabricsIn addition, the store carries a large selection of buttons in diverse materials including horn, mother of pearl, glass, stones, wood, and vintage. Promenade also offers one of the nation’s largest selections of ribbon in unusual brocades, double-faced satin, grosgrain, and velvet including unique Hyman Hendler vintage ribbon.

The store’s unique offering of  vintage fabrics include one of a kind European pieces dating back to the 1940s such as German Cotton velvet (ca. 1950â€s), Rhodia Panels (ca. 1940sâ€), Vintage Faille, Vintage Peau de Soie, Vintage Satins, Vintage Taffeta, Vintage Cotton, Vintage Gros Grain Fabrics, Vintage Silk Velvet Panels, Vintage Polyester Satin from France (ca. 1970sâ€) and Vintage Polyester Moire (ca. 1970â€s).

Halpern 2Owned by Herbert Halpern and his son Cole, the Halpern family has been in the fabric business for nearly a century. Herbert’s father, Max Halpern, opened Halpern’s Fabrics in the late 1930s and was responsible for bringing couture fabric to New Orleans. When Max had to move the store, the only lot available was on St. Charles Avenue, which at the time did not have the foot traffic and desired customer base. However, the move turned out to be very fortuitous, as St. Charles Avenue has grown to be one of the most famous and elegant streets in the city of New Orleans.

I had heard of the store but really only discovered Promenade Fine Fabrics last year when I came across its Instagram account. To say I want to visit this store is an understatement, hopefully one day…….
My Promenade shopping has been only online and the experience is always very pleasant.  I’ve  ordered four pieces of fabric from Promenade and have sewn two.
My first order was this fun cotton stretch sateen. I ordered 3 yards but received extra due to the design placement. I’ve yet to sew the big piece!

The second piece I ordered and have sewn is from a polyester chiffon with a raised surface design.

The two other fabrics in queue are stretch cotton sateen large-scale prints which I look forward to sewing this year.
New Orleans is so very lucky to have this brick and mortar gem, but how fortunate for the rest of us to have online access to such gorgeous materials! Don’t forget to checkout its Etsy Store too 😉
Congratulations go to lucky RTW FASTER #42,

Sarah, your garments made from Promenade Fine Fabrics are so beautiful! My husband and I were just visiting New Orleans 2 weeks ago. We stayed a few blocks away from this store and actually went to the store 3 times…more time spent at Promenade than any other area in New Orleans! Yes! It’s that fabulous! And we barely scratched the surface in seeing all of the trims, buttons and fabrics. Congratulations to the winner. She will really enjoy anything she chooses to purchase. And the Halpern family…they are priceless and precious people and we absolutely love them 💕💕💕😎

My son is a freshman at Tulane, and we are visiting him next month. I’m DELIGHTED to have an opportunity to visit the shop, especially because I’ll have two dresses I need to buy for, plus a couple of casual pieces. This is one time I’m grateful for a small stash!

I am a costume designer from NYC and every time I am in NOLA, I always stop in Promenade. The Halperns are the sweetest people, as well as extremely knowledgeable in what they sell. I love talking with them about the fabrics they have and seeing the actual pictures of what the designer did with the fabrics. So glad you found them, you truly need to visit their store.

I’ve also ordered online & the service is fabulous . A wonderful gem of a fabric store . I’m currently ogling several more pieces from Promenade !,,,,

Even though I’m from Reno my husband is from the New Orleans area and daughter went to Tulane Law School so I’ve had the opportunity to visit Promenade Fabrics several times. It’s a fantastic store and everyone is very helpful and knowledgeable. The last time I was there an opera singer was also there picking fabrics for various ball gowns. The fabrics were gorgeous!

I have been trying to find another reason to go to New Orleans and you just handed it to me! It’s so hard to keep a brick & mortar fabric store going these days, it’s worth a road trip!

I happened across Promenade when traveling for business several years ago. I bought beautiful blue wool crepe that I used for a dress I made during the Craftsy couture dressing making class. It was so hard to mark a decision because there were so many beautiful choices.

When you visit our beautiful city Sarah, you will learn that it is as charming and genteel as your own Charleston and our food is by far the tastiest and spiciest and culture unique. Now that carnival over, the spring and summer are beautiful. I hope you visit soon.
