Outfit of the Day Wrap Up

30 Jul Outfit of the Day Wrap Up

For those who are serious about sewing their own clothes, I highly recommend a 30 day (or longer) Outfit of the Day exercise.

Greetings. I’m ending the summer Daily Mix in my Luau Maxi, perfect for sipping Skinny Piña Coladas by the pool. I made the dress for Hawaii 2018 and bring it out on hot summer days. The Burda 7110 pattern is featured in A Stylish Guide to Classic Sewing. My lightweight stretch cotton fabric is from Promenade Fine Fabrics.

Let’s talk Outfit of the Day……

Is this a vanity exercise?

I believe we all want to look our best, and in order to do so you need to know what your clothes really look like on your body. How we spend our time should be worthwhile no matter what we do, and the investment of time and effort involved in making one’s clothes is huge.

Photographs can be brutal and admittedly some of my clothes no longer made the cut after seeing a photograph. But, overall, what a successful learning experience it was.

I did not send out daily emails, but if interested you can see it all by clicking on the Outfit of the Day photo to the right, or this link, and you can read about my intention here.

In doing an Outfit of the Day exercise, you’ll discover:

  • Your sewing strengths and weaknesses. What techniques do you avoid?
  • Your preferred colors – you may be surprised!
  • Your most flattering silhouettes
  • The proper proportions for your body type
  • Your most flattering hemline for shirts, skirts, dresses and pants.
  • Your Wardrobe surplus & deficit. Do you have variety?
  • Your accessories surplus and deficit. Do your accessories enhance your outfits? Are they thoughtfully chosen or do you wear the same pieces everyday?

Personally, I discovered:

  • I need to work on sewing pants – fit, fabric and pattern selection.
  • My favorite summer color must be pink. There was a time when it was coral.

  • I wore no yellow.
  • I’m attracted to bold prints, colors and florals.
  • I do not sew in capsule. Lots of dresses and orphan separates which need companions.
  • For the last 10 years, I’ve sewn slim silhouettes. They’re flattering but I’d like to add some variety.
  • I also discovered that I need to select accessories with more intention. Most of my gold accessories are gifts, but the others are random purchases. Lots of fun accessories are available at great price points, and I will continue to explore options.

If you’re ready to take a 30-day inventory of your handmade or even RTW wardrobe……

  • Select an outdoor spot at a time of day with good light. For me it was between 9:30 AM – Noon EDT. Soft morning light is flattering, late afternoon light harsh and aging.
  • Get fully dressed for the day.
  • Use a tripod or selfie mode with your camera, relax and shoot.

  • Don’t wait until the end of the month to look at your photos. Review each day’s photo on the same day you took it and post it in a document.

___________________________________________________________________

I promise that if you do this, you will cultivate a wardrobe you enjoy, and sewing clothes that never make it out of the closet will become a thing of the past 😉

Many thanks to those who followed along!

Sarah….I’ve personally enjoyed the ‘Outfit of the Day’…….I remembered most, but some were new to me…..Yes surprised about the pink…..I would have said blue…….
I’ve begun fall sewing plans….with intention to vary my makes, with more shirts and knit tops with more variation, than my favorite ETee from Sewing Workshop

Thank you for this exercise, it’s inspired me to do more with my sewing…..I certainly have enough fabric and patterns!

Laura, Thank you so much! Would you believe I have sewed from my stash all summer? I finally bought some poplin for an upcoming skirt. Fall is a different story…….. I’ll be visiting online fabric stores big time 😉

Great suggestions. I agree that the camera often shows things, good and bad, that you don’t pick up otherwise. What a great way to organize your wardrobe and figure out what’s missing.

Many thanks, Mary. My regular posts are a celebration of completing a new garment, but the OOTD exercise was the moment of truth…. how do these clothes work for me? I’ve certainly got some gaps 😉

I’m truly impressed by how you can carry these big prints elegantly.
The sewing bug has not bitten me yet, although i did sew, embroider, and knit for my children when they were small, but when it bites again, your tips will be very, very useful.
At present, it’s enough to be cheered and charmed by your lovely self in various imaginative outfits. Thank you for the various sunny posts!

Thank you so much, Hanh Trang! I think the prints work because the silhouettes are fitted – that way it’s not too much of a good thing 😂

    Hi Sarah,

This was such a wonderful post. My closet is stuffed full of clothes and yet when it comes time to get dressed, Ugh! These suggestions will help bring some intention and organization to my closet.

Thank you for your sewing and wardrobe inspiration. It is awesome to have you back online,

    Julie

Thank you, Julie for your lovely comment! It happens to everyone in my opinion. I’m reluctant to get rid of clothes until I am certain I have no use for them. I always imagine the possibilities………. some of which never happen 😉

Hi Sarah, I completely agree that a photo is different than looking at oneself in a mirror: more unbiased, more useful! I’ve enjoyed seeing your outfits, in good part because I am curious about which garments you’ve made that you enjoy wearing or still wear after some years! But the analysis part is very useful, and an excellent “poke” for me as I begin sewing for myself more, so that I focus on filling in gaps, things that go together, capsules, etc.

Many thanks, Joan! It’s so easy to get in a rut and it was extremely helpful to me in just seeing what clothes I gravitate towards. Sometimes we don’t pay attention to our daily choices. 😉

Pat, Thank you so much for your comment.. Like so many other things, sewing for yourself can be trial and error until you get the hang of it. 😉

Enjoyed your beautiful pink summer dress, very lovely! Read your comments and you must live in my house, too! Wow, everything you wrote I found myself nodding my head with agreement, the colors and even the jewelry! Do you think we are influenced by style magazines or what fabric color ways are available at the stores? Do you think the Pannetone colors influence us more than we think?

Thank you, Linda! I do shop from what is available for sure, but what surprised me is that I’ve made clothes is so many colors, yet I chose to wear 8 pink outfits in 28 days.
Gray and Yellow are the Pantone 2021 colors of the year. which I’m obviously not feeling 😉
Your questions regarding what influences our color choices are worth investigating!

I’ve really enjoyed reading your wrap up and appreciate your insights. So glad things are better in your world and that you’re sewing and posting again.
I came across this and thought you might like to see it. Totally different take on that fabric you were able to score from Farmhouse Fabrics. It’s look 26 of the Badgley Mischka Spring 2020 RTW collection if the link doesn’t fully paste. https://www.badgleymischka.com/spring-2020

Majorie ~ What a stunning dress! It clearly explains why Badgley Mischka is so successful. I’m guessing five yards of fabric for the dress?
      Thank you for sending 😊

This was a great post & very inspiring to see your outfits & your process . Covid has made it hard for me to think outside. My “ uniform “ shorts & tees . Now that we are sable to go out more I’m looking in my closet for things to wear – just because . Thanks as always for such thoughtful & inspiring posts .

Yet another great post! I wish I’d found this blog at the very beginning; there’s always so much good advice and inspiration (especially about having a NO UFO rule!), I keep coming back for refence on challenging projects.

I’ve always been more of a “jeans and t-shirt” person, but it’s probably time to go through my wardrobe and take the pictures to analyze what works (or doesn’t). Recently I tried on a nice black top I bought a few years ago, but almost never wear, and it’s probably due to the neckline–basically a crew-neck, when I prefer V’s or square/sweetheart necklines. Now to decide whether to refashion the neckline (the top is long enough to trim the hem and use that fabric for new neck-binding) or just make something new.

I have followed your blog and enjoyed your beautiful sewing since you started. You have been an inspiration. Although I do not have a social media presence I still enjoy seeing others efforts. The sudden disappearance of you from your blog, instagram, etc is confusing and concerning. Hopefully, you and your family are well.
