Where am I ? and… a Susan Khalje Giveaway!

08 Aug Where am I ? and… a Susan Khalje Giveaway!

Many thanks to all who have contacted me either regarding my whereabouts or who have been in my place…….. I’ve fallen into the wedding vortex and I can’t get out! Friends tried to warn me about how time-consuming wedding planning is. Even though  I believed them, I never realized this meant ALL of my time.

Excitement abounds with the August 23 date quickly approaching. One thing I’m excited about is the completion of my Mother of the Bride dress, and I plan to post lots of photos shortly after the wedding.

I must thank Susan Khalje for giving me the confidence to undertake the project. Through her live and virtual classes, I learned how to fit muslins, handle fine fabric and truly transform a pattern into a couture garment.  To help celebrate my excitement ……..  Susan is giving away her new Cocktail Dress pattern and Video Series Tutorial to one lucky winner!!

from the Susan Khalje website……..

sk-home-slides-v3

The Cocktail Dress

The Cocktail Dress is a fitted princess sheath, made elegant by the addition of lace at the yoke and in the skirt. It’s constructed from start to finish with a full range of couture techniques: a muslin, underlining, hand stitches, finishing details… and you’ll find it’s a design that easily lends itself to variations; in fact, different bodice and hem treatments are included in the pattern.

 You will receive the following:

– Instant Access to Full Length videos for three years.
– Custom pattern designed by Susan Khalje sent right to your doorstep.
– Multi-platform accessibility on i-pads, mobile phones, laptops, etc.

All you need to do to enter your name in the hat is to humor me 😉

For the last two weeks I’ve been sewing night and day on 52 yards of fabric. I bought 3 1/2 yards of 15 fabrics shown below. Twelve are Amy Butler cottons and the other three are similar designs.

unnamed

Can you guess what I’ve been making?

Everyone who responds with an answer will be entered for the giveaway, but those who guess correctly will be entered twice!

The sewing is wedding related, and the answer along with the winner will be announced between August 24 and August 29th. The deadline for entries is August 21st.

Hopefully I’ll be back before August 23rd, but if not please know I’m spinning from one wedding duty to another. I cannot wait to share the fruits of my labor with you and appreciate you hanging with me during my virtual absence. 🙂

Good luck to all with the giveaway, and many thanks to the wonderful Susan Khalje for her generosity!

Mom and I did a wedding ring quilt out of white satin and out of the blue satin we used for Sister’s bridesmaid’s dresses. Regrettably we had enough fabric left over from the dresses and didn’t need to cut up my MoH gown. 😉 We presented it for Sister’s first anniversary.

Congratulations! Several years ago (10?), Susan transformed my attitude towards my sewing by simply validating my preference for “slow sewing”. I also learned much from her especially in terms of fitting. What a great give- away.
As far as the Amy Butler and other cottons, I would guess that you’re making a quilt, and if I had to guess I’d hazard a guess that it’s a double wedding ring quilt. Can’t wait to see whatever it is.

Hmm, 52 yards, too much for a quilt I think. I’m going with table/ chair covers but now that Amanda has mentioned bunting I think it could be that too 🙂

  • Monique
Posted at 02:18h, 09 August Reply

It can’t be all that complicated if there’s 52 yards and such a short time before the event. And I would go crazy if it were any more difficult than furnishings and trimmings, so my bet also is on tablecloths, napkins, cushion/chair covers. Although it would certainly make for a very colourful collection of dresses and shirts for all the children in the party. Whatever you are making, I wish you all success and a great wedding day.
With many thanks to Susan Khalje too, for providing the great giveaway!

My guess is aprons for gifts. Something simple but stunning I am sure. Having made over 100 embroidered napkin rings and the table centres for my daughter-in -law and sons wedding which took me over 5 months to make I wish you luck. She was so exited she had found the exact colour fabric she wanted and presented it to me to make everything. I did not have the heart to tell her it was very thin lining fabric and was a nightmare to embroider. At least each guest had a nice memento to take home!

    Hi there Sarah,

What an exciting but exhausting time for you; but we all know you will pull it off with your usual panache and style.

As I am from the UK and bunting is used a lot for outdoor celebrations, street parties etc my guess was that you are having an outdoor themed reception……………….or, are you all jetting away for the wedding. Either way, I think that the fabric could be for table cloths or runners; seat covers or napkins and bunting to deck the greenery that may surround you. I did also think that maybe, its not for that, but you have a theme and you are making items of clothing for the catering staff to wear – so maybe sarongs, skirts or aprons for the female waiting staff and waistcoats and bowties for the guys??

I wondered about the bridesmaids and their male partners, but I don’t think you would go for them in different fabrics, bearing in mind the sophisticated MOB outfit……………

Gosh, it will keep us all guessing until the pictures are posted.

Are you going to be dressing up for a fantastic group dance, I have seen quite a few u tube videos lately of Mothers of The Bride or Groom. Perhaps you are putting on a spectacular fun dance routine to get everyone in the party mood after the formal part is over and the party kicks off ??

52 yards.. That’s a lot! These *would* make great table runners, but I’m going to go for chair covers. Two weeks worth is a lot of sewing! Would 1.75 yards be enough for a chair cover? It’s either that or wedding favour bags for sugared almonds, but unless you’re having 600 guests, i don’t think that would take that much fabric. Good luck! And can’t wait to see the dress!

Just did some proper math and it would make more like 3000 – that would explain the day and night, (and no doubt be adorable) but is seriously pushing the limits of motherly dedication. As if giving birth, cleaning up vomit and going to parent teacher interviews isn’t enough!

With so many options and so much fabric, I’m guessing someone as creative as you would be doing lots of different things. I can see flowing skirts, cool tops, funky shorts and slacks, breezy summery dresses, scarves, shoulder wraps, and home dec accents as well… whimsical pillow covers; eye catching window dressings; maybe even a lampshade or two; and of course table decor – runners, napkins and placemats. Add some quit batting and you can even make some potholders, oven mitts and washable trivets to sit under those hot serving dishes, protecting your dining room table while your family and friends enjoy your latest culinary offering.

My first guess is table toppers for 15 tables. For 60-inch tables, you would need more yardage if you were going to make full length tablecloths, but toppers over a sheer would be perfect for a summer coastal wedding. There sure are a lot of ladies who think you are making table cloths or napkins for the reception and I agree that would be a strong possibility given the 15 different fabrics for possibly 15 different tables. But I’m not sure that is the look you/your daughter would have at a wedding. But I honestly don’t know what it could be. My best guess is either table cloths, like everyone else, or some kind of gifts for the brides maids and Grandmothers. Anyway I would love to win a class from Susan! I think you are making bridal decorations of some sort, like huge tropical flowers, but not tablecloths, as that would be too patchwork looking. Might even be enough for some Caribbean flair attire for the honeymooners!

Came back to say how wonderful that Susan Khalje has offered her class for a lucky winner. Those of us that follow you and her, know the couture dress course well. I enjoyed every minute of it and have learned so much. Whoever wins the prize will have a great opportunity to work on a stunning outfit, for a Wedding, Graduation ceremony, Anniversary, Engagement………….oh, the possibilities,.as tantalizing as us all trying to guess what you are making with the fabrics

Do remember to be kind to yourself and have a truly wonderful day.

I was torn between 2 ideas of what you were using this fabric for, table toppers for the reception or circle skirts for all of the bridal party. I think I well go with table toppers for the reception. Over 50 yards is a lot of fabric!

  • Angela

Oh my, I’ve had my eye on that course for since it was announced. As far as what you are making… that is tricky! But I think they are gifts for the wedding party – beach totes with matching small bags, that kind of thing.

3.5 yards of 15 fabrics can only be … not tablecloths (there will be more than 15 tables); not gift bags; not pillowcases (who would get those, anyway?); not seat cushion covers (simple work that’s not really in your wheelhouse – in a good way) … shirts for the groomsmen and matching dresses for the bridesmaids. Unless it’s ribbon skirts for the bridesmaids. I give up – but I’d still love to win the Susan Khalje prize!

I would have said a quilt for the bridal couple but it would be HUGE if it used all that much yardage. I’m thinking you’ve set up a steep challenge of some sort for yourself. Since you were previously in the designer apron business, I’m going to guess that the reception will have waiters, waitresses, and help staff wearing your beautiful designer aprons made up in beautiful color and fabric combinations to brighten up the event and to be immediately identifiable as they move through the crowd, and that afterward the aprons become theirs to keep as a thank you gift on top of the usual tipping.

I originally thought bows for the chairs. I like the idea of table covers/runners and napkins. Then I thought favours. Now I reckon a wedding ring quilt – I’m not a quilter so have no idea how much fabric that takes but reckon this yardage would cover it. Hi, Thanks so much to you and Susan Khalje for such an exciting opportunity to win this class. I am excited for the upcoming classes that are to come on her web site. Also, very excited to see the wedding pictures of your dress. My son got married last October and I remember the vortex! I am now in the baby vortex…due 9-22! I have absolutely no idea what you are making. That is a lot of fabric. Ladies have thrown out some very good ideas. My official guess is a quilt but I think that is more fabric than you would need and I can’t imagine doing the MOB dress, the wedding and a quilt all so close to the wedding. You amaze us all with your creative nature and your productivity.
Congrulations to the happy couple and to the parents of the bride! I look forward to your future post and hopefully one day upon retirement to attending a Susan khalje class in person!
    Best wishes, joy

There are several items you could make! Last year for my son’s wedding I made several table runners that were used for the Shower and for the groom’s dinner. I also made triangle banners that were used for decorations at the groom’s dinner. I embroidered a huge sign that said “Just Married” and I also embroidered the ring pillow. In order, I would guess, banners, table runners, napkins, robes for the bridesmaids and all women in the party. Looking forward to seeing your pictures!

Table toppers! How pretty to have 15 tables of different, but coordinated fabrics. And I feel your pain. I planned my own March 2014 wedding and sewed my own dress. I bought Susan’s Khalji’s Craftsy course and it was a godsend. Her muslin making process was so helpful and freeing that by the time it came to cut and sew the 4 ply silk and crepe de chine underlining (45 yds total!) I was fairly relaxed. So much so that I was still sewing the beading onto my lace back THE DAY OF MY WEDDING! As I was getting my hair done! Well, and I might be a wee bit of a procrastinator too. I prefer to think of it as I do my best work under pressure! 🙂 good luck! I’m sure it will be beautiful.

    Hi Sarah,

I’m with you! Been there and it was a vortex….good description! It will pass all too quickly. In fact, don’t be surprised by the rather odd sense of deflation once she had left the wedding reception to begin her new life with the man of her dreams. THAT is when I cried…not before. OOPS I was supposed to humour you!! OK…..she returns and is your friend for life. And she appreciates all you are doing for the wedding.

OK so my guess is chair covers & table overlays for the reception.

Oh my, that is a lot of fabric, maybe bunting or garlands around gazebo or portico, or the Jewish tent thing held over the bride and groom?
So thankful for the opportunity to win, Susan Khalje is a total hero of mine.

A co-worker was showing me tablerunners for a shower that had yet to be delivered from ebay source.Told her how she could make her own.I think you are having a tropical theme banquet! Tablecloths would be beautiful and recyclable.

Napkins; that array of colours would look fabulous on plain white tablecloths with exuberant summer flowers and candlelight.

I think you are making yards of bunting. A lovely way to decorate the wedding venue, lots of lovely summery patterns. Have a great day.

My guess is draping & poufs for the sides of the tables, perhaps a canopy for the bride and groom, along with small wedding favor holders.

I’m going with the wedding bunting. Mind you, 52 yards of it is a lot of bunting. Whatever it is, I’m sure it will look really lovely, and I hope you all have a wonderful day.

My guess is the projects are table coverings.

With that amount of fabric, you could cover a dance floor, so it has to be much more than a bunting. I think you are making table runners with napkins for the tables, and maybe tote bags for the bridesmaids. I think you should also make yourself a badge that says “MOTHER OF THE YEAR!!!”

Second guess here. As I was trying on clothing in a darling shop today I looked up and saw ruffled lamp shades for the lights. I’m now thinking ruffled or gathered covers for lanterns along with bunting; streamers etc. Maybe markers along the way to the wedding or reception site. Whatever you are making I’m sure you made a muslin beforehand and added 1 inch seams!! Just kidding. I’m going to check the weather in SC on Sat. now. Hope it is spectacular in every way..

Thanks for the chance to win this wonderful prize. Knowing how busy you are with all the wedding prep I admire you taking on another project. My guess is ( I want to say aprons since you had a business making aprons) but I think I’ll say chair scarfs.

Gift bags were my first thought, but they could also be chair covers and napkins to match solid color tablecloths. Best wishes for a wonderful time!
