Famous Frocks Giveaway!

01 Oct Famous Frocks Giveaway!

The kind staff from Chronicle Books sent me a newly released book to review entitled,

Famous Frocks – The Little Black Dress by Dolin Bliss O’Shea. (not to be confused with the book Famous Frocks by Sara Alm and Hannah McDevitt)

What a beauty!

famousfrocks_lbd_9781452123653_350Coco Chanel, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly. . . . Each of these women had an influential take on the most classic wardrobe staple of all: the Little Black Dress. In this chic sewing book, patternmaker Dolin Bliss O’Shea pulls inspiration from famous LBDs throughout history—including Mary Quant’s mod mini, a classic wrap dress worn by Liza Minelli, Princess Diana’s smart A-line, and more—and offers patterns for reinterpreted versions that are perfectly stylish. Including 10 full dress patterns with sewing variations to make 20 garments in all, a primer on sewing techniques, vintage photographs of style icons, and full-color shots of the finished pieces, this book has everything fashionistas need to bring timeless style right into their closets.

The first part of the book is 40-page chapter devoted to general sewing instructions.

Part 2 features the ten iconic dresses and variations. Each garment and variation are photographed on a model resembling the iconic figure who inspired the pattern.

The instructions include fabric layouts, a list of the sewing techniques used, adequate step-by-step instructions and illustrations.

The book and pattern pieces are encased in a high quality jacket which opens to reveal both.

photo-33

The patterns are neatly tucked into the red envelope, and offered in five sizes from XS to XL (33″ to a 45″ bust) They are drafted for a 63″ – 66″ height and  printed on the front and back sides of the paper making it necessary to trace the pattern.

_______________________________

I’ll be reviewing individual patterns from the book in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, I’m eager to share a copy of the book with one lucky reader! Please let me know if you would like to be entered in the giveaway by leaving a comment.

The random winner will be announced on Sunday, October 5!

Good Luck 🙂

My daughter, who is being married in three days, worked at Chronicle Books until moving back East a few years ago. Chronicle Books titles & topics are captivating — and now this!! I am a watercolor artist with a renewed commitment to sewing since my retirement from active Episcopal ministry. My next project is actually an LBD — but right now I have to finish the silk dupioni bolero jacket I’m wearing to the wedding (Vogue #8957). I’ve altered the design, with a soft, stand-up ruffle around the neck and self-piping on all edges. Photo can be seen on my FB page : https://www.facebook.com/judithclark49

How FUN! I’m in! Although I do think that it is funny that all models are 5’9″ or taller, but all patterns are made for women 5’6″ or shorter. I’m 5’9″ and people say “oh you’re lucky you can wear anything.” And I say yes, as long as I like capris and 3/4 sleeves on everything! And that’s why I sew… LOL

Can’t wait to see your versions of these! What a fun book!

What fun to review such a publication! We must all remember our FIRST LBD. Mine was a beautiful wool crepe, princess seams with a drop waist lined with black silk The drop waist, neckline and sleeves were trimmed with black satin piping with a piping shoestring bow at one hip. A very special high school semi-formal dance, crafted with love by my mother. A lady who still loves fabric at the age of 94!!

This book sounds wonderful and I’d love to win it. What a perfect combination it seems to be – eye candy and how to produce the look for oneself (though midnight or very dark blue-green is better for me than black, so I’d be making myself a LBD equivalent).

I shall very much look forward to your forthcoming reviews whether lucky or unlucky about winning the extra copy.

Is this a record number of comments? If so, this book may become a best seller.

I do not own a LBD! Never have. My mom always said they were for funerals and not pretty girls and young women. So, I was never comfy in all black. I always add a color. Fact is i love to see women in black dresses when i go out. envy, then i remember I sew and can make one at any time. Well, my husband wants to see me in one. So i think the added inspiration in this book may get me to my LBD goal of NO SECOND COLOR! So if I don’t win, I’ll buy a copy!

What an awesome book. I would definitely love to be entered to win. You have been an inspiration to me. I have been trying to learn to sew well fitting pants since Spring. I wore one pattern completely out making adjustments on it and had to replace it. So far i have made twelve pair of pants none of which have fit well. When i was tempted to quit i would read your blog. You always make sewing seem so doable and inviting. So for now i will keep chugging along. Thank you for the encouragement. Michele O
