06 Apr Aunt Maggie’s International Giveaway!
A few days ago FedEx delivered a surprise package from my Aunt Maggie. I received my first surprise package from Aunt Maggie at age 7; a large box filled with homemade Barbie clothes including a wedding dress! Through the years Aunt Maggie tastefully perfected her hobbies of sewing, crafting, cooking and home decorating to impressive heights, and I’ve known very few people to be as talented, industrious and thoughtful as she is.
You might guess an unexpected package from Aunt Maggie is a good thing, and my anticipations swelled when a gorgeous piece of virgin wool popped out upon opening the tightly packed box.
Yep – the box was loaded with gorgeous fabrics inspiring my first blog giveaway!
Take a look below:
1. 2 and 1/2 yards (60″ width) Black and White Virgin Wool plaid. Maggie sent me 5 yards and I’d love to share half.
2. 1 yard (55″ width) hot pink wool I’m not sure the type but it’s perfect for a pencil skirt!
3. 2 1/2 yards (45″ width) red and off-white silk taffeta
4. 2 1/2 yard (60″ width) beige/camel wool. This is very, very heavy wool. Perfect for the North Pole.
5. 2 yard (44″width ) white pique
6. 2 2/3 yards red/white/blue. I’m not sure what this is other than a stiff linen blend.
7. Brand new Butterick 5850! I was so excited about the recent $1.99 sale that I accidentally ordered 2 🙂
8. Vogue 8766. I received a duplicate pattern when I signed up for the Craftsy Sew the Perfect Fit class.
9. Vogue 8786. Ugh…… I bought the wrong size and couldn’t return it.
10. Out of Print – Vogue 9607 I found this pattern in a box of fabric and have no idea where it came from. Very pretty, but it’s not my size!
11. Vogue 8491
12. Vogue 8381
Lucky Thirteen! I’ve never worn these and I never will 🙂 Kate Spade Size 6
14. 50 Yards of hem tape – 2 25-yard pieces
All patterns are unused. To enter the giveaway, simply leave a comment below indicating which items you’d like by Wednesday April 10th . Winners will be selected by a random drawing and announced on Thursday, April 11th at Noon EST.
Happy Saturday!

Posted at 10:12h, 06 AprilSuch a generous giveaway! I would love those orange shoes, but alas, they are not my size. My second choice is the black and white wool. Thank you so much for the chance, and I enjoy seeing what you have made, I think my favorite is the lime green knit top from the Mood fabric.

Posted at 10:16h, 06 AprilHi, Sarah. How wonderful to have an Aunt Maggie – and for you to share some of your patterns and material – (and even beautiful shoes!) I am interested in the 2 Vogue patterns (9607 and 8786) and the 2 1/2 yards of red and off white silk taffeta. Please add my name to the giveaway mix. Thanks.

Posted at 10:24h, 06 AprilFirst of all I have to comment on how much I LOVE your blog–you sew beautifully , have a great eye for style but yet your presentation is not intimidating to those of us who are inspired by your efforts. Thank you. This giveaway is “sew” exciting–my faves in your stash are: I LOVE the black and white wool plaid-classic!, the pink wool-very current color for spring this year, the beige wool-great sophisticated coat color, white pique -beautiful crisp summer shirt ahead, B5850-so me!, V8788-classic, V9607 still fashionable with such potential and the V8491–love the jacket dress combo–another so me!

Sure is great to get a suprise package. I have an Aunt who sends packages too. I got a package of zippers, hem tape and binding last time. Sure is nice to have that stuff around when I am sewing. Now I don’t’ have to make a run to the store every time I need some thanks to Aunt Judy and her generous suprise package 🙂

Posted at 10:41h, 06 AprilWow! This is an amazing give away. I think I would like my nieces to have memories of care packages sent from me some day. I have begun to teach them to sew, sew . . . they would be the perfect recipients of my better, stash overflow. Thanks for inspiring me, and I would love to be put into the running for those beautiful Kate Spade shoes.

Posted at 10:48h, 06 AprilWhat a wonderful aunt! I remember when I was a little girl going to visit a friend of my mother’s and she gave me a Barbie doll wedding dress as well!
You are so kind to share your haul! I would be delighted to receive the 2 1/2 yards of red and off-white silk taffeta. I sure wish I could wear those lovely shoes, but I am a size 6 1/2. C’est la vie! Enjoy sewing all your lovely new fabrics – I look forward to seeing what you create.

Posted at 10:48h, 06 AprilWow! How lucky for you! I love the black and white plaid, the red and off white tafetta, the pink, and the heavy wool (since I kind of live at the north pole a.k.a Western New York)! I also like Butterick 5850, Vogue 8766 and the vintage 80’s-ness if Vogue 9607-reminds me of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. The shoes are gorgeous but would not fit me, but WOULD fit my oldest daughter perfectly! Happy Saturday right back at ya!

Posted at 10:51h, 06 AprilThe black & white virgin wool is fabulous!!! It’d make great coat/cape style.

Posted at 11:06h, 06 AprilI love following your blog… Which i was alerted to by my daughter who sews EVERYTHING. So refreshing to see what you sew.
I’ve been immersed in quilting lately, but you have inspired me to sew for myself again…
I’d love the Vogue 9607 pattern. I have a pencil skirt cut out and will start it this weekend!

Posted at 11:23h, 06 AprilI positively love the red pink and white taffeta.
I am in awe of your sewing. I started sewing many years ago b/c I couldn’t afford the clothes I wanted unless I made them myself. But I guess that’s how many of us started. Such a shame you couldn’t wear your lovely blue lace on Easter. But it’s going to warm up this week. Thanks for such a great blog.
Sarah
Posted at 11:25h, 06 AprilFirst I must say how much I enjoy your blog. Has given me many great ideas. I would be happy to win the vogue pattern 8786. Thanks for sharing

Posted at 11:26h, 06 AprilI live in London, so you might not want to send abroad, and I would understand that. If you are considering over seas contestants, put me down for the beige wool. The still cold weather here makes it appealing!

Posted at 11:37h, 06 AprilWow! Thanks for being so generous. I would love that white piqué, I have a black and white patterned piqué that needs some plain white to set it off. If Aunt Maggie would like to adopt me as a niece I am available 🙂
Marjorie Devlin
Posted at 11:52h, 06 AprilLove your blog and you’ve been quite an inspiration!! Upon your recommendation I bought Lynda Maynard’s “Sew Fit” course and loved it!! I also purchased the Style Arc Elle pants pattern… They fit wonderfully!! Thanks for sharing your sewing experience with the rest of us!!
Your aunt is wonderful to share her love of seeing and fabrics with you. I love the Vogue 8786 and the white piqué would be wonderful for a blouse!

Posted at 12:46h, 06 AprilHow fun! I have a friend who sends me little and sometimes big surprises like that whenever someone from her side of Oregon travels to my side. I’ll throw my name in the hat for the hot pink wool and V8786.

Karen Ailsworth Kinzer
Posted at 12:55h, 06 AprilHow generous of both your aunt and you!
I like the beige camel wool (this year winter is never ending in Wisconsin, and I hope that sewing a heavy wool now would be like forgetting your umbrella and making it rain- maybe if I pretend hard enough that I am NOT ready for spring, it will come!), Vogue pattern 8786, or the hem tape. Would you like us to pay for shipping?
Thank you!
Carolyn
Posted at 13:05h, 06 AprilPlease don’t enter me in the contest, I was just wondering what you kept from the box since you are sharing such lovelies!?!
Julie Starr
Posted at 13:06h, 06 AprilAren’t our aunts treasures? I have one that, truth be told, I am more like than I am my mother. It’s been a running joke between us for years. She and my uncle just celebrated their 50th anniversary – I was their flower girl, and it was such a special get together. You’re very generous to share Aunt Maggie’s gifts. Those Kate Spade shoes would go great with the Lily Pulitzer fabric I just bought online, although I haven’t picked a pattern yet! I am also a size 6, so please put my name in the hat for those. Thanks Sarah! Can’t wait to see what you make.
Sarah Jo
Posted at 13:13h, 06 AprilThe hot pink wool–please oh please! I plan to take Diane Rupp’s sewing class you mentioned a couple months ago and this would make a fun skirt for a gray day.
Suzanne Parker
Posted at 13:22h, 06 AprilI would love the Vogue Pattern 8687. It’s exactly my size. Your treasure are wonderful. After looking at the other responses, I see other people have already spoken for the pattern. So, oh well. Love your blog and I’m going downstairs TODAY to vacuum and clean out my sewing room. It has become a storage facility for golf clubs and spring is coming, I hope. That heavy wool would be nice if no one claims it. I live in northern Michigan. So maybe a nice little jacket?
Suzanne Parker
Posted at 13:26h, 06 AprilSo, throw my name in for the heavy wool. I see that’s how it is being done. Thought it was a first come first served. You will keep me busy through my summer months off from school. YAY!

Posted at 13:32h, 06 AprilI don’t mean to be greedy but I would love to have some of the hem tape and that gorgeous plaid wool. What a lucky niece you are!

Posted at 14:07h, 06 AprilWow, you and Aunt Maggie have great taste in fabric! Please toss my name in for 1 (black/white), 4 (wool; I’m from Canada, thick wool is great!), 6 (linen), 8 (pattern 8766)… and the shoes! They’re my size, my mother’s size, my sister’s size… Shoes have to be defended carefully in my family. 🙂
Crafty aunts are wonderful! Both of my mother’s sisters are wonderful with sewing, crochet, embroidery, etc. I actually embroidered a tablecloth passed down through my aunt that belonged to her mother-in-law, who had purchased beautiful embroidery flosses but never got around to it. Wonderful linen that’s hard to find new now. I used the cloth as part of my wedding decor.

Posted at 14:07h, 06 AprilGreat giveaway! I would love any of the wools or the linen.

Posted at 03:50h, 07 AprilPlease thank your Aunt Maggie on my behalf – even if I don’t win – the excitement of selecting a possible fabric/pattern is wonderful. Anyway, should I be a lucky winner I would love No1 the black and white plaid wool. I live in Perth Australia and here it is almost impossible to purchase quality wool fabric especially if it is not a basic plain colour. Our temperate climate and lack of home sewers goes a long way to explain that. Thank you so much for this give-away! Lene

Posted at 08:20h, 07 AprilHi from Nova Scotia: I too enjoy reading your blog, especially now as, having broken my left wrist, I’m confined to a cast for at least four more weeks. What a pain . . . on “sew” many levels! One of the wools would be lovely to receive for making into something cozy for fall/winter, and I promise to send photos of the final product. Thanks for thinking of us all, and thank-you too, to Aunt Maggie!

Have a lovely day, and good luck to everyone!

Actually, any item would be a welcomed gift. (Except, those beautiful Kate Spade shoes would not fit my size 11 feet. 🙂 )

Posted at 16:42h, 07 AprilWhat a nice post for me to read. I am a grandaunt who sends packages with books, patterns, cloth and notions to my only grandniece who sews, receiving lovely thank you notes in return. It is a fine tradition! Were I to win the hot pink wool, I would fashion a fine wearable! Thanks for the opportunity.

Posted at 18:53h, 07 AprilHello from Lower Hutt, New Zealand. I have been following your blog for a little while as I love the idea of sewing my own clothes and trying not to buy RTW. You are an inspiration and I love your style. Patterns are expensive to buy here in NZ so I would love either B5850 or V8786 and am happy to pay postage. Thank you to you and your aunt.

I’d like to enter for the beautiful vibrant rose pink wool because I adore (OK, crave!) that color and it’s so rare to find such a lovely saturated shade. Also count me in for the black and white plaid and the Vogue pattern with the dropped waist. Thank you for the opportunity to participate!

Posted at 13:26h, 08 AprilSarah – I love your idea of a surprise giveaway! I’ve been lurking reading your blog ever since you started your RTW fast a couple years ago, and am very inspired by the clothing you’ve made – so stylish, but still modest and classy, the perfect trifecta! (But truth be told, I’ve been just as inspired by the clothing items you have “re-fashioned”, and have completed a couple refashions myself because of it.)
If you still have room to throw more names in the hat, I’d love Vogue 8381- it’s such a cute dress pattern! I probably have more fabric than I need, so will hit enter quickly here before I am tempted to say how great the first two pieces of wool are…………..be strong, self!!!!!!

Posted at 15:03h, 08 AprilHi there. I am “crushing” on your mandarin dress. Love, love, love!! My 2013 fabric fast restricts me from buying any new fabric (I’ve fallen off the wagon once already). But there is nothing that says I can’t enter a giveaway for the chance to win a luscious piece of yardage to satisfy my cravings. Please toss my name into the hat for the following: the hot pink wool. Which goes with nothing in my wardrobe and that’s why I must have it. Everyone needs a piece that “zhooshes” things up. The white pique, because summer is just around the corner and whites usually last for a season. And I want to make a white peplum top.
Beth Rothfuss
Posted at 15:11h, 08 AprilI love a give away. Thank you for being so generous. I would love the red/white/blue linen and/or the Vogue 8786. Love your blog, you make the cutest items.

Posted at 17:27h, 08 AprilHi Sarah, That Vogue 8786 is too cute. I’d like to throw my name in the hat for that. And can I give you my address so Aunt Maggie can send me something so wonderful! Don’t you just love when you get a box of fabric at the door.

Posted at 18:53h, 08 AprilOh my how generous of you and your Aunt. Thank you for hosting this amazing giveaway.
I have plenty of fabric and patterns (I am restraining myself very well don’t you think?) but the hem tape would be wonderful please, if I’m lucky enough to win something.
Thank you again.

Posted at 18:54h, 08 AprilI would love the black and white fabric. The hot pink, the hem tape or any of the fabric. Of course I’ll take any thing I can get. The larger size patterns are too big and the shoes too small

Posted at 19:04h, 08 AprilOooh! how exciting – and who can resist fabric and patterns? Not me, that is for sure! I love, love, love the hot pink wool, and the two vogue patterns (8786 & 9607). Being somewhat cuddly – either would ‘fit a treat’!)
Most generous of you!!

Posted at 17:14h, 09 AprilWow! That is one nice package you received. I have been reading your blog for several months now, although I am not sure if I ever commented before. I wish I would be able to swear off buying most clothes, but I have not yet the skill to do that. I can sew for the children, but so far, whenever I have made items for myself there is always something lacking, all due to fitting issues I am trying to solve, as well as getting used to the pattern sizing. Recently I made a pair of pants that are too tight and a skirt that is too large, and they are both in the need to alter/fix pile right now. I need to work on a proper muslin and find exactly how to fit my body. I have a nice little stash of patterns and fabric ready to be attacked into submission, and made into wearable garments. It does not help that I really enjoy natural fibres and am always fearfull of cutting into the nice fabrics.
Anyhow, from your wonderful list, what I could definetively use in my adventures, and would fit my needs are any of the following:
1. 2 and 1/2 yards (60″ width) Black and White Virgin Wool plaid. – beautiful!
2. 1 yard (55″ width) hot pink wool . I would actually make a pencil skirts, something I have been thinking about for a while. I just returned to work after a 3 year hiatus and down here Fall is in full swing.
3. 2 1/2 yards (45″ width) red and off-white silk taffeta. I would afraid to cut into this, but it is so beautiful, and my colors.
4. 2 1/2 yard (60″ width) beige/camel wool. I love wool, and there is a wonderful wool fabric producer near by, that I drool whenever I see their fabric for sale.
5. 2 yard (44″width ) white pique. Versatile!
14. 50 Yards of hem tape.
Unfortunately the patterns are either not my size or not suitable for my body type, so I must pass up on these. The shoes rock, but again, would not be able to wear them! Love the color though.
Thank you for the wonderful sharing of goodies.

Posted at 19:45h, 09 AprilWhat a wonderful aunt! I would love to have the beautiful red, white and blue linen blend fabric. Lovely!

Posted at 23:06h, 09 AprilHow very generous of you! I wasn’t going to enter because I’m a newer sewist, but since I just can’t get #3, the red and off-white silk taffeta out of my mind, I’m in.
I’ve gotta say, the pink wool is a stunner too!
Fiona
Posted at 00:53h, 10 AprilHi Sarah – Do you think Aunt Maggie would like to be my aunt too? She sounds awesome. On the basis that you inspired me to enter into my own RTW fast for 2013 and that I’m currently debating my pledge for Me Made May 13, I hear the siren call of the hot pink wool as it’s nearly winter here. But I wouldn’t say no to your Vogue Craftsy course dress pattern either. Thanks for being so generous with your time and inspiration.
Carol S.
Posted at 06:00h, 10 AprilThe shoes are my size, but I have to admit, I’d never wear them either. Would love to put my name in the hat for the pink wool, as I’ve just perfected a TNT pencil skirt which I’m working on version 3 of. The beige/camel wool as I’ve got a coat pattern I’d love to make and warm coats are needed in carless NYC. And the white pique. The only pattern I’d use I already own as I’ve signed up for the Craftsy fitting class and have been thinkign about an all lace version, Maybe I’ll do my first dye job too.

Posted at 07:22h, 10 AprilWhat a generous giveaway! The shoes are in my size, and my favorite color! Sign me up. 🙂 IF not that, then #7, Butterick 5850. Thanks again! You are such an inspiration.

Posted at 09:22h, 10 AprilWhat a lovely idea to share your loved but not needed fabric, patterns, and a pair of Kate Spade shoes. Recently new to sewing I am having so much fun learning and shopping and taking classes. I would love to have the black and white plaid wool or red and off white silk taffeta or the beige /camel wool. The shoes wood almost be to much to hope for but I will, I would the shoes for for my size 6 feet.
cindy
Posted at 09:39h, 10 AprilOh my goodness, this is just so generous of you! Well, since you asked and all – and since I’ve already started planning what I’d make with everything! – the black and white plaid wool for a coat, the hot pink wool (because, sady, I wrecked a metre of hot pink cashmere that I cut for a skirt this past winter – still crying over that!), the taffeta because I’ve fallen totally and completely in love with it and will make either a gorgeous full skirt or Butterick 5850 ( which I just bought myself!), the white piqué would be great for a summer jacket, the beige and camel wool for a coat because at times it FEELS like the the North Pole here in the Great White North, and the Kate Spade shoes because I adore orange and I’m a size 6, and rarely do the stars align to find both of those in the same shoes!
Thank you so much! Btw, I just love reading your blog!

Posted at 13:33h, 10 AprilAnother UK reader here. First just to let you know what an inspiration you are to fellow sewers like me! Aren’t these fabrics just beautiful, how lucky you are, and so generous to share. Your recent lace projects are fabulous especially the orange! I have just made my daughter a lace skirt for her 25th birthday. Recent rises in postage costs from the USA will prohibit sending fabric here, I frequently lust after Mood fabrics but they don’t send here! However I still enjoy your posts and daydreamed about projects from the fabrics. Keep up the inspirational posts.
