Sarah Gunn of Goodbye Valentino: Meet the Maker
For our Meet the Maker department in Sew News Oct/Nov 2019, we talked with Sarah Gunn of Goodbye Valentino. Sarah is a fashion sewist, blogger, and author who has inspired thousands of sewists. Enjoy this fun Q&A for a look inside this brilliant designer’s mind!
SN: Describe your perfect day.
SG: In reality, I have no perfect days because I put too much on my plate, but my fantasy perfect day…. Wake up to a perfect cappuccino in an Italian villa followed by a morning of fabric shopping. Lunch in Paris then off to a Chanel runway show. An evening glass of champagne prior to an opera at the Met and hitting the sack in my own bed.
SN: What’s your must-have tool in your studio?
SG: My left-handed Kai scissors!
SN: What’s your greatest extravagance?
SG: Food and culture! I’m always up for fine dining, concerts, performances, gallery and museum exhibitions. The first thing I do when traveling is check out performance venue and concert hall schedules.
SN: What’s your most treasured possession?
SG: I have three: My children’s portraits, the piano and my Pfaff Creative Icon.
SN: Where do you find inspiration?
SG: I look to the classic designers and classic style icons for inspiration. Every prominent designer understands the classic concept before stepping onto the runway. When we know how to adapt classic garments to suit our style, age, shape and size, we are a step ahead of seasonal trends. Sewists get the best of both worlds by applying the designer’s essence to clothes that work for their life.
SN: What’s your favorite fabric to work with?
SG: I love working with any high-quality fabric. As part of the Mood Sewing Network, I’ve had the luxury of experimenting with wonderful fabrics. Silk twill, ponte & scuba, stretch cotton and brocade are a few of my favorites.
SN: What’s your sewing mascot?
SG: My black and white English Cocker Spaniel, Lulu.
SN: What’s your best way to decompress?
SG: I completely decompress at our simple and quaint beach house in South Carolina. It’s especially wonderful when the entire family and our pets are there.
SN: What are your three favorite sewing hashtags?
SG: #thetunicbible #fashionsewing #sewthelook
SN: What’s your favorite sewing snack?
SG: Once I start sewing I forget about food, but you can find half-drunk cups of tea or coffee sitting around!
SN: What’s your motto?
SG: Sew Your Own Clothes, Save Thousands of Dollars and Look Like a Million Bucks!

Posted at 09:01h, 20 OctoberGreat interview! I don’t remember how I found your blog but it was just over a year ago as I was preparing to retire. Frustrated with the poor quality and fit of RTW, I resolved, like you, to sew my own clothes, something I haven’t done in over 20 years. I learned to sew as a small child by watching my mother, first making clothes for my dolls then my own when I reached middle school age. Because of the time lapse between any meaningful sewing, I have had to relearn many techniques so I routinely consult your blog and those of others in the wonderful internet sewing community.. I subscribed to many publications and read anything I can get my hands on to enhance my sewing skills. I would love to be chosen to receive the Sew News publication. In just over a year, I have gone from owning a regular sewing machine and a serger, both purchased years ago from the proceeds of my mother’s estate (my way of honoring her memory and her gift of sewing) to owning 3 additional machines: a cover stitch, an antique machine for straight stitching on heavy materials and most recently, an embroidery machine! I am currently in the process of redesigning my sewing room to make sewing more enjoyable and productive. Do you think I am all in on this sewing gig now? I look forward to each one of your blog posts, have read The Tunic Bible from cover to cover more than once and the tunic pattern and a wonderful piece of linen material is in my sewing queue once I decide on an embroidery design. Thank you again for your inspiration.

Posted at 09:12h, 20 OctoberCongratulations on your interview! Always inspiring. I would love to win the subscript to Sew News since I need all the inspiration i can get! I am a 68 year old wanna be sewist who grew up at my mother’s knee watching her create beautiful garments for me during my life. A woman with very little formal education education, she could totally master creating beautiful garments. My biggest challenge is to make the time to sew! I would love to be inspired by this magazine in my quest to sew….every day!

Posted at 09:26h, 20 OctoberCongrats on the interview! How fun!
I don’t often comment but I read every post you write. If I haven’t had a notification in a while, I’ll come check to make sure I didn’t miss anything. I used to subscribe to Sew News back when it was in a newsprint type format. I’ve only recently got back into sewing, after years, nearly 30(!!) of weight gain, weight loss, gravity causing shifts and being in seemingly endless muslin mode. But I finally got fitting help and figured out, for the most part, which alterations I need. I was thinking about all my old Sew News mags still in storage from a recent move and have been meaning to get them home. And thinking I should subscribe again.
Thanks for all your inspiration!

Posted at 19:56h, 20 OctoberSarah, enjoyed your interview. Your blog got me back to sewing in 2015 and inspired me to make a trip to Paris with Marcy and Katherine Tilton. Both changed my approach to sewing. Loved the Tunic Bible and your workshop in Plano Texas.
Didn’t know you were a lefty like me. We also have pets in common. My black and white cocker is named Sophie. She’s a rescue dog and practically a celebrity, coming from the same place that George Clooney got his two cockers.

Posted at 20:30h, 20 OctoberSarah, I am fellow “Spartanburger” and would absolutely love to meet you in person someday! Congratulations on your article! I look forward to every one of your newsletters! I had read an article about you in the Herald-Journal several years ago and cut it out and saved it, and about a year ago I came across it and started following you. I love to sew. I sewed a lot of my own clothes in high school, then when I had a family it became mostly sewing Halloween costumes for the kids and just some basic things. Your blog has inspired me so much, I want to return to sewing now that I am an “empty-nester.”. I would be thrilled to win the subscription;. I never really learned how to truly alter clothing to me fit me, and would love to deepen and broaden my sewing skills. Thank you for inspiring us! .

Posted at 14:54h, 23 OctoberYou’re very lucky in the States with so many sewing and craft magazines. Most of the ones here in the UK are aimed at beginners. I have a subscription to Threads but their website won’t sell to anyone in the UK because of EU data laws. Blogs like yours really fill the gap
