Butterick Pattern 6388, New York Christmas & Holiday Pleasures!

14 Dec Butterick Pattern 6388, New York Christmas & Holiday Pleasures!

Happy December, Dear Readers!

Two minutes after publishing my last post (here) I discovered subscribers did not receive an email notification, and that a WordPress update was in order… It had to be professionally handled and time marched on. So sorry 😐The plan was to make a winter white cableknit turtleneck sweater to wear with jeans…..
The result is a white winter wonderland sweater dress with a lapped collar.

Butterick 6388 had been in my pattern stash for years waiting for just the right fabric. French Terry is suggested and shown in the modeled view.

Once the novelty knit cable pattern fabric arrived from B and J Fabrics I had a different vision and the turtleneck was a distant memory.

What I especially love about this pattern is the combination of fit and comfort. While it features dropped shoulders the dress is not oversized, and even though it’s a pullover, the dress is shaped from the waist through the hips with front side panels.

The back is shaped with a center seam,

however, I omitted it to avoid disrupting the cable pattern.

The lapped collar is well-designed and easy to put together-  even with bulky fabric! While laying out the fabric, I discovered the cable design is not symmetrical. Since symmetry was not a possibility, I strived for balance. Every pattern piece was staystiched immediately upon cutting and I finished all of the seams with the serger. The seams were topstitched where indicated, and the dress came together in no time!

I packed my new dress for a quick trip to New York, and to my delight it snowed!

I traveled to New York with my dear friend and  literary publicist, Kathie Bennett to celebrate the publication of Elysian Magazine’s Winter issue and launch of the magazine’s new App.

To my surprise, New York Fashion Week founder and icon, Fern Mallis  stopped by for the festivities! Fortunately for me – the hotel and event headquarters were in the middle of the garment district!

I finally met each of the talented designers at Vogue, McCall’s and Butterick, and took a show and tell of my sewing, to let each know how much I appreciated their talent.

Below, I’m with Vogue Pattern designer Carlos Correa with one of my favorite party dresses, Vogue 8997,

but I also met McCall’s pattern designer, Jackie Polikoff and Butterick designer, Doree Epstein.

I stopped by to see Swatch and check out new arrivals at Mood,

and had a lovely lunch with Peter (check out his Blueprint shirt class).

I am participating in Julie and Dorcas’ 2020 January French Jacket Sew Along (more about this soon), and was introduced to the fabulous East Coast Trimming –  a must-visit store. There I found Chanel inspired trim and gorgeous buttons for my fabric –  which would you choose?

…. but it was the French ribbons – everywhere that captivated me. I’m ready to make more tunics!!!!

Lastly – I left filled with inspiration, the kind that only New York can bring about.  With fabric orders on the way, I’m ready to cut and sew, but only after I wrap, wrap, and wrap!

I’m trying to let those lovely visions of sugar plums, gorgeous fabrics and fabulous clothes I want to make dance in my head as I settle back into reality.

All the best!

I love your fabric choice! I have made this dress also. I noticed you didn’t include the pockets. I put the pockets in and then serged them off as they were too bulky with the fabric I used. I may try it again using a lining type fabric for the pockets.. Love your blog and look forward to reading it.

Thank you, Jane! Yes, I omitted the pockets because I knew they would be too bulky in this fabric. It was the right decision this time around but I may add them depending on my fabric choice 😉

First, love the sweater dress. That’s an adorable pattern and it looks lovely on you. But what an amazing trip!! I’m mostly a quilter/machine embroiderer and like you, I love to meet and greet the people who fuel our passion with creativity and style. When I get to meet a fabric or pattern designer, I just flip with excitement and I’m in awe like a teenager at a rock concert going back stage. I just loved reading your post and so enjoyed watching you get to meet your pattern designers and hang with the who’s who in the garment district. Lucky girl!

Lucky girl, indeed! I love your fabric, trim & button choice for your French jacket & will look forward to hearing more about that. (I’m taking A Susan Khalje class next October. Just starting to consider fabric, trim, etc.). I have had your dress pattern for awhile & it just rose to the top of my “make-it” list. It was fun to read about your trip.

Thanks so much, Jan 😊 I’ve only made one French jacket before, but I chose this fabric for a lighter weight springtime jacket due to our temperate climate.
You’ll love sewing this dress pattern!

Your comment about your blog malfunction is exactly what is happening to mine, and I don’t use WordPress, just Bloglovin to Post. My blog can still be seen at http://www.bloglovin.com/@cashmeresally and Bloglovin has offered no help whatsoever. Any clues as to what you did to fix yours?

Ugh, Sally – what a pain! I had to get a professional to update my platform so I didn’t crash my blog. Good luck 😉

Love your knit dress. I have always enjoyed everything you’ve made and blogged about throughout the years. Your garments are classic, not fussy but look like a million dollars. I especially enjoy the tips – stay stitching every pattern piece, the how and why you do certain things to the pattern – omitting pockets due to bulk, omitting center back seam to maintain symetry of the beautiful cable knit.. Well done.!

Many thanks for your lovely comment, Sharon! The classics have served me well through the years and I’ve found they are easy to variations to suit my style. I am loving this dress AND pattern – a keeper for sure 😉

I saw your dress on Instagram and was curious of the fabric but a closer look here, I have that fabric. I made a turtleneck dress which later became a skirt. It’s quite warm. Your dress is lovely, good choice on the pattern. You’re trip also sounds wonderful, congratulations to you and Julie on all your success in 2019, may it continue well into 2020. Happy Holidays!

That’s so funny – you have this fabric and made what I was planning to make! It is very warm, however I have very few warm and casual dresses so it is just what I wanted and needed.
Many thanks for your comment, Graca and Happy Holidays to you 😊

I love this dress! As a matter of fact I had a wool dress almost like it; Christmas, 1969. It was such a delight to see your version. Happy Holidays to you and yours.

Have enjoyed reading the new book. Congratulations. Not sure where you can find the time to sew, but your closet must be bursting at the seams!( no pun intended)! Great looking dress, good job on it as always! Not sure that it wouldn’t be too warm for Jacksonville. We have had such funny weather lately.Hope 2020 is a wonderful year for you and yours. Best wishes!

Thank you, Susan! We have limited cold weather in South Carolina, but now I’ve got something fun to wear for our short winters 😉
You can always make the pattern in a lighter weight fabric, but you already know that!

This is beautiful. Your sewing is a obviously a big inspiration to many, When I think to myself that I don’t have that kind of talent, I remind myself that we’ve all got to start somewhere!
Mostly, however, I am commenting to wish your daughter the very best in her journey with breast cancer. Prayers for her quick and total recovery. May God bless your family!

What a great trip! I love the dress and fabric. I have been searching for a knit fabric like that for months. Thanks for the tip on B&J Fabrics! Can I ask if you stabilized the hem with hem tape? It turned out beautifully. I look forward to following your blog in the New Year and seeing all the wonderfully inspiring makes!

Thank you so much, Kathleen! Yes, I stabilized the hem with a one inch piece of lightweight knit interfacing to avoid buckling. B & J is an unbelievable fabric store – beautiful and organized – I’ve never seen a fabric store like it anywhere. 😉

I have just finished sewing this sweater dress and I’m excited to wear it. It’s the second time you’ve inspired me to sew one of your makes, the first being the St James striped dress. I adore it, too. Hoping and praying your daughter is doing well this year.
