28 Oct Lucky 13

Maybe it’s just my love of Halloween surfacing, but I often believe the number 13 gets a bad rap. Today I added the 13th committed person to the RTW Fasters’ page and decided it was time for an update.  These 13 women represent a diverse geographic area including three countries and several states scattered from Florida to California. They have been communicating about topics important to them as they sew themselves away from the retail madness, but more importantly they are sewing beautiful clothes. Linda, living in a warm climate resists the t-shirts and crops scene, and recently completed this crisp periwinkle...

25 Oct From Grim to Grinning

What are your plans for All Hallows Eve? After wearing a ratty black cloak for 600 years, I was in the Mood for a makeover.  How do you like it? Since  I’m on call 24/7 , I need a dress perfect for morning, noon or night.   Late one evening I walked through the walls of Mood Fabrics and found this gorgeous Italian wool double-knit. It was quite the bargain requiring only 1 ½  yards of fabric. After so many positive reviews on the Pattern Review website I put down the scythe, bought this Vogue pattern and made the dress in one day! 17 Oct Vogue 8833

Here is my new top.  If I was on Project Runway, Tim Gunn would walk into the workroom and tell me I needed to live up to my potential. Michael Kors would call me a One-Trick-Pony, and Heidi Klum would exclaim that I look like I’m going to a baseball game before saying Auf Wiedersehen with a kiss on the cheek. Does this mean I do not like the top? Not at all!  I like it, but I’m starting to repeat myself and it’s time to regroup. ______________  Two weeks ago I went to Waechter’s Silk Shop in Asheville, NC with a friend who decided to start sewing for...

11 Oct Tunic Time!

If my favorite garments were ranked by how much wear they receive, this one would get the Blue Ribbon, the Silver Cup AND the Gold Medal. Now I get to see if my most recent tunic dress will earn its place on my list of favorites.   Practicalities occasionally escape my aesthetic sensibilities, and I made the casual dress out of a silk charmeuse I bought at Mood Fabrics during my first, but hopefully not last trip to Mood in December 2011. [caption id="attachment_1910" align="aligncenter" width="284"] Butterick 5415[/caption] The easy structure, whimsical nature and versatility of many tunics continue to intrigue me. The trickiest part...

10 Oct A New Page!

I’ve been sewing away while the Mood Sewing Network schedule is being coordinated. A new sewing post will follow soon, but in the meantime meet Linda! [caption id="attachment_1927" align="aligncenter" width="125"] Linda began her RTW fast on August 1, 2012[/caption] I have created a new page on my blog for those giving up buying Ready-to-Wear clothing for year in favor of making their clothes. Linda gave up buying Ready-to-Wear on August 1 for one year. Tired of buying cheap clothes made overseas or paying a fortune for clothing, she was ready to make a lifestyle change. Linda thought she was all alone in her decision...

29 Sep New Look 6162

I sure have missed my blogging friends! I have been so eager to post anything just to say hello while I was taking care of a patient, hosting a party at my home followed by entertaining out-of-town company immediately upon returning from our unforgettable vacation to the Mediterranean. The patient is fine, the party was fun, the company found its way to a football game in Florida, and I hit the sewing machine after a four-week break. I imagined this beautiful brocade from Mood Fabrics as numerous garments. My husband suggested I make a close-fitting special occasion dress which would be beautiful, but...
