The New Forty – Garment # 4

08 Feb The New Forty – Garment # 4

Dear Readers,

Forgive my unexplained absence. I knew Mimi’s  January 9th wedding would set me back a few days,  but around the time of the wedding my beloved father, Don Welch, became very ill and died on January 22. I lost my focus on sewing. Dad was too great of a man to be described in a few words, and though I owe so much to my wonderful father, I especially credit him with inspiring me to think outside of the box and to be an original.

As life returns to a new normal, I decided to complete a sewing project I started earlier last month.

GARMENT #4:
There’s nothing especially original about a white shirt, but every woman, no matter what the age, needs a couple in her wardrobe!

www.goodbyevalentino.com Sewaholic Granville Shirt

I was fortunate enough to receive a new Brother  PC420PRW machine for Christmas.  Known for its superb buttonhole capabilities, the new machine supplements my trusty 20 year-old Bernina 1230. Not surprisingly, I was itching to sew some buttonholes 😉

Last year I spent several days altering Sewaholic’s Granville Shirt  pattern to achieve a flattering fit. Due to ill-fitting RTW tailored shirts, I had avoided this style throughout my life – but no more! (Read more here.) I cut and sewed the shirt following my previous adjustment with the exception of the cuffs.

IMG_0042

I omitted the sleeve plackets and buttoned cuffs, and echoed the flared lower edge of the blouse with 3 1/2 inch split cuffs.
My fabric is a stretch lightweight cotton. It sewed beautifully, but wrinkles easily, and I discovered there is little benefit in using a stretch fabric for this pattern.
What I find most flattering about Sewaholic’s Granville Shirt is the back, designed with princess seams which yield a nicely fitted back.

Compare the difference between this photo and the one below featuring an old Ready-to-Wear shirt from Talbots!

Ready-to-Wear Misfit!

Ready-to-Wear Misfit!

Not only is the back gently curved, but it fits flat against the back with no bulk, making this a perfect blouse to wear over jeans, shorts etc….

IMG_0073

Brother’s PC420PRW buttonholer lives up to its reputation making 7 perfect buttonholes in less than 10 minutes!

Did you know when sewing garments with front buttonhole closures, to always place the first buttonhole/button at the fullest part of your bust? Properly placing that first buttonhole will assure a better fit and give you more control to style the blouse as you please. I prefer an open collar.

IMG_0076Taking the time to fit this pattern last year was well worth the effort on many levels. Obviously, I’ve developed a go-to pattern, but more importantly, my efforts proved that it’s possible to successfully wear many styles with a proper fit.

Until soon ~ I promise!

Condolences for your father. It’s difficult losing a parent at any age.

I love what you’ve done with this pattern! I’ve been struggling with that “back bubble” on so many outfits. It looks like going to a princess seam blouse/top/jacket is the way to go! Kudos! It looks great! And I love those split cuffs!

I agree with you that if there’s anything to get you back to “the new normal” it would be sewing! And what a lovely project you have completed! This blouse is so beautiful in screams spring/summer! SO sorry to hear of your father’s passing, Sarah.

Fabulous blouse on you: the hem and sleeve treatment really add personality! And wonderful fit! RTW garments always catch at my back waist and puddle, given my very flat shoulder blades (no curvature in upper back) and posture: good fitting here really is slimming!

We have been designing and building a house for 1+ years now and I’m fairly consumed with all the details, but a wonderful sewing room with great light is in the works. This will be my OPPORTUNITY to return to sewing as you did when you began your blog several years ago.

If this topic picques your interest, please consider a blog with your thoughts on HOW best to get off the ground with one’s sewing after a looooong hiatus! What I mean is: might you review your own process and consider what choices you made that were most helpful?

It seems from reading your blogs over time, that several Craftsy classes on fitting, Kenneth King’s copying RTW course and later, working with Susan Khalje all helped you greatly. But I wonder what you think if you were to review in your mind and summarize. Perhaps, A LOT is the sheer dedication and sticking with it through thick and thin?!

    Thank you.

what would be the best way to not have “wings” at the bottom of the shirt when sewing princess seams. i know that would drive me crazy if i made that shirt!

      Hi Donna,
The ‘wings’ come from the side seams, not the princess seams, and should be easy to adjust. This pattern features a large flare at the bottom of the blouse, and I removed approximately 4 inches. I left a little so it would drape over jeans etc…. nicely.

Hi Sarah. I stumbled upon your website early November and was so intrigued with the idea of the RTW fast. I love all of your projects! Of course I was disappointed to see you would not formally do a 2016 fast, even so I decided to do the fast anyway. One of the reasons I decided to get back into sewing was because of ready to wear fit issues. Just one example: by the time I try on a sized blouse to fit my bustline, the shoulders are hanging and the sleeves are 4 inches too long! My goal is to sew clothes that fit and flatter. So far, so good.

My condolences on the loss of your father. My dad passed a week after his 71st birthday, and I know your sorrow.

Thank you for your posting of the beautiful white blouse and for your inspiration!

That’s a beautiful shirt. You were so lucky to have such a long and good relationship with your dad.

I have been working on improving my shirt making skills with the Granville Shirt pattern. It’s fabulous. I work on a machine that is almost 50 years old, and I use the Singer button hole attachment with varying degrees of success. Although the machine and I aren’t always in perfect sync, it’s the buttonholes that make me think of replacing it. Are you totally satisfied with the ones on your new machine?

I do love the buttonhole attachment on the machine, but I’ve only sewn a practice round of buttonholes and the buttonholes on my shirt. Compared to my Bernina which is an excellent machine and 20+ years old, the Brother’s buttonhole capabilities far exceed it.
The button is placed into the buttonhole foot and it measures and determines the perfect size for the buttonhole. I know excellent sewists who have bought this machine just for the button hole capabilities.
I suggest you let a professional demonstrate the machine if you are interested in one, or even find a YouTube video.
I really love this and will sew more buttons now 🙂

A wonderful addition to any wardrobe. The proportions are perfect for you. It is good to know that the stretch in the cotton did not solve the wrinkle problem. I have plans to make a classic white shirt also so I will look for some of the “wrinkle free” fabric… does anyone know where it can be found. I think this would also be stunning in a lightweight chambray for the perfect denim shirt to go with white pants this summer (in the Pacific NW we still need a cover in the early evenings). Wishes for all the wonderful memories that will be replacing the current sorrow.

I’d love to know how you like your Brother pc420prw. A few years ago, I was looking to upgrade my sewing machine. The final two candidates I picked were Brother pc420prw and Bernina 1230. I ended up finding a Bernina 1230 in pristine condition, and I’m very happy with it. But I’ve been curious about Brother pc420prw. Looking forward to your review.

How funny is that? First of all I love my 20+year-old Bernina 1230. It is a great machine and I plan to continue sewing on it.
To me comparing the two machines are like comparing a Honda and BMW. Both are wonderful but different.
I’ve only made this blouse on the Brother and so far so good. I really, really love the buttonhole attachment and will write more about the new machine soon 🙂

Blessings to you and your family on the loss of your father. I am always encouraged by you and your sewing devotion! Here in the Great White North, sewing is my outlet as I await a hip replacement. Snow shoeing and just plain old walking when conditions are icy and snowy are a test when your health is normal never mind the underlying fear of slipping and falling since being told of this hip deformity.

But never mind, it is fixable and I totally agree with you…a woman can never have too many white blouses! Love this new creation…:) Debbie
