It’s Sew Easy, Workshops and More!

09 Feb It’s Sew Easy, Workshops and More!

Greetings Dear Readers!

It’s always a little strange to see myself on video…… it looks like me…but is that really my voice? Yesterday I received the final of  three videos produced for the PBS television series, It’s Sew Easy. It was the first one I filmed but the last one to be aired.

its-sew-easy-tunics

In this video I demonstrate the principles of The Tunic Bible. Because I was filming for PBS, I could not mention the name of the book. Although I was there as at the invitation of Coats & Clark, I could not mention the company name. Strange rules indeed but that’s the way it is.

I filmed three segments in one day. I had no teleprompter and was strongly encouraged to avoid retakes. I was also wearing an earphone which connected me to the producer. She communicated with me throughout the filming about various issues such as timing etc…

I don’t know how I did it, but I illustrate 8 plackets in 10 minutes! (click on full screen to watch without interference from sidebar images)

Julie and I are delighted to continue hosting Tunic Bible workshops and recently added additional workshops to our calendar.

Sarah, you’re such a natural behind the camera! You want to see your book sales skyrocket? Video yourself in your sewing room making your different tunics and put those videos on YouTube while featuring your book! lol. I have “The Tunic Bible” and have read it from cover to cover. However, I haven’t sewn any because I have to make an FBA in the bodice and I was afraid to ruin the patterns in the book. So instead, I been cutting up commercial patterns to make my tunics as practice. I’m certain yours are just as simple so I’m ready now to use TBB to make my next one. I’m getting ready to do several vlogs on YouTube featuring your book and patterns so get ready! I’m Power Tools With Thread on YouTube and in the middle of a sewing room makeover right now, but I want to wear a pink linen tunic on Tuesday, 12 Feb so I’m going to do a video featuring one of yours this weekend. Can’t wait! I’ll be showing your book and telling all my sewing friends all about you. I’ve only been doing videos since December 2018, but I’m up to over 1,300 subscribers. If you are unsure of how to do home videos, check out Joy Bernhardt on YT. In her most recent, she talked about the camera she got to do her videos. She has hundreds of sewing videos out there and is “of an age” where we more seasoned seamstresses feel like we’re chatting with an old friend. 🙂 Hope to see you in the video blog-o-sphere!

Don’t cut up the pattern in the book. Trace it. It is such a good pattern you should have started with it.

Nice to hear from you Becky and thanks so much for the advice! I agree with the reply below….. just trace the pattern. It will work nicely with all of the plackets. Good luck with your YouTube videos 😊

Great video! I want to make another tunic for the #So50Visible challenge! Plus spring is coming and a tunic is such a perfect garment for early spring! Also, waiting patiently for your new book!

This is so exciting! Sarah, you are a natural on camera. Great job and you may have needed to do the filming quickly due to time restraints, but your instruction was clear and concise. Congratulations!

So you would sew the big fancy appliqué onto the placket before attaching it to the tunic?

Posted at 16:11h, 09 February Reply

Both the gold and jeweled appliqué were sewn on by hand after the placket was attached to the tunic.

I bought your book last fall but haven’t sewn from it yet. Wishing you would do a workshop in Washington state!! Your video was very concise and informative.
Do you have a workshop on video??
Also love the pin wall grouping. Did you buy that as one piece or put it together yourself? Where did you find the pins??

      Sharon,
Many thanks for buying the book and we’d love to do a workshop in Washington state one day.
I do not have a workshop on video, but what a good idea!
I filmed this video at the It’s Sew Easy studio in Cleveland Ohio so I’m not sure how the pins were grouped 😉

Sarah, I just watched your “tunic” video. Beautifully done, and so inspiring.. I just relocated to the Charleston area (Seabrook Island) from Chicago and have been following your blogs for a number of years. Are you planning a tunic workshop at 5 Eighths Seam in the near future? If so, I would love to attend.

      Mollie ~
Welcome to South Carolina! I know you were glad to escape the frigid weather Chicago just experienced 😊
We have held workshops at 5 Eighths before and will certainly consider another, but we don’t have one planned for this Spring.
      Many thanks for your comment!

Margaret ~ What a great idea! Maybe we can do something in conjunction with the show in 2019. Our publishers have a big presence at Quilt Market and invited us when The Tunic Bible was published.
Thanks so much for the comment and the idea 😉

Please come to WA state. Maybe check out the Sewing Expo held every year at the end of February or first of March in Puyallup (just south of Seattle). The Expo could use some new voices as we seem to be losing some of the more tenured to retirement.

Sarah, Watched the video after I made the comment above. You are a natural. But what is really remarkable is your design sense.
Your combinations and styling between the fabric choices and or trims make for the prettiest tunics ever. I am even more inspired since I watched the video.

Daisy ~ Tunic sewing actually is easy and I enjoyed condensing the placket information into a compact presentation…….. still, a teleprompter would have been helpful! 😉 Many thanks for your comment..

I purchased your book last year in the spring from Amazon….it is brilliant! I just viewed the pbs special on this site and was wondering if you could do it on your own channel website in slow motion as a on going tutorial? So we can make the tunics along with you…..say Yes! The options seem endless, I think your viewers would love the concept of more interaction of making a tunic with the creators of the book.

Congratulations for the Sew Over 50 challenge. Many, many, many years ago McCalls was hosting a a sewing challenge using their patterns. Most participants used younger models but I chose to use my mother-in-law. She was quite full busted, narrow waist and curvy hips that would not quit. I put her in a black cocktail dress which accentuated every part of her, but in a tasteful and classy way. Her hair was silver at the time and cut in a short, chic style. We posed her against a black, shiny cadillac and she looked stunning! So glad to see that women are not afraid of their age any more, not afraid of their shape any more and can really enjoy living.

I just caught the tunic show on It’s Sew Easy which brought me to your blog. I, too, love tunics and had just completed one. I really loved the one you were wearing and wonder where you get all your gorgeous fabrics. I have ordered online with mixed success., but for really nice fabric for garment sewing it’s almost my only choice. Do you have hints for ordering the right fabric online?
