Love it Sarah! Go girl!! I always loved reading about your fasting days and was so sad when it ended! Glad you’re taking it on for another year! I am still sewing and will continue in the background. Hopefully do more sewing this year. Thanks for you support during my fasting year! It was a wonderful experience. x

I don’t even need to think twice about this, Sarah. For quite some time now I have had your challenge in the back of my head and I can honestly say that on the rare occasion I am in a clothing store I use it as an opportunity for inspiration only. It’s fun to look at details, fabrics and styles, confident in the knowledge that I can produce a garment that is just as well made. I have no problem at all walking out with nothing but a few notes and photos (except for that Calvin Klein zip front sweater dress that was just to good to pass up :)). Count me in!

I have been thinking about this as well since a lady in Asheville told me about this. I have some gorgeous red wool that would be a good first item. I, too, go to higher end stores to get ideas for sewing.

I’m in! I’ve been following you for months now and you have been a great inspiration for me. I haven’t bought any RTW since August. I’ve been sewing for twin 2 year olds up until now. But with Christmas upon us, I’m taking a leave from that and am going to concentrate on my wardrobe. I retired a couple years ago and must say my selection is old and sad. It’s time to spruce it up!!

Debra, When I did this the first time I had barely sewn clothes in 25 years….. maybe something once a year. I started sewing very easy patterns (and often still do). I was amazed how my sewing skills started to improve. It was the best thing I had ever done for myself. Hope you’ll join in !

Yes, I think I will join you! I don’t think it will be very difficult since I already don’t buy much RTW (I don’t like shopping). The big challenge will be trousers but now that I am getting better at fitting I think this is a good opportunity to conquer this fear. I assume it is alright to continue wearing the RTW that I already own?

    • Laura Casey

Emmely….go to Craftsy.com their having a sale, and you can get a class on how to fit slacks…..just an idea…..I’m in on this one too!

Do you mean the Sandra Betzina course? I already bought it and am plucking up the courage to actually start on adjusting the pattern. My only attempt at a pair of trousers was a HUGE failure, and huge can be interpreted in two ways in this case since I probably could have fit two of me in them. That was years ago though and my skills have definitely improved since then.

I would love to do it. I will have to work on learning how to get you photos. I really don’t buy much RTW now except for slacks, jeans and shorts. So personal challenge will be to get a slim fitting pair of jeans with a stretch denim, leggings out of a thicker knit and a pattern for dressier slacks. I was hoping maybe someone can tell me what patterns they have had luck with. i have tried Silhouette patterns and love the yoga pants. The other slacks just don’t work as well for me. My favorite jeans are a Lee slim cut size 10 which are a higher waist. Love it that it pulls in the tummy. Any suggestions as to which patterns to start with? I have some fabric. Ha!ha!

Hmmm, this would be a challenge, but then I haven’t bought any RTW in months because it is so hard to find something worth buying, which fits. There are a lot of ugly clothes out there. Maybe this could motivate me to get going on all the projects I have planned. My rare shopping binges could be limited to shoes and lingerie. I was just watching the preview of Downton Abby Season 4, love all the details in the clothes, maybe if I sew enough I get make it past construction and fit issues and move on to design details. I’ll commit.

I am intrigued by the idea, but hesitate to take it on here in the Upper Midwest where parkas and sweaters are worn daily because the thermometer can go for weeks without getting above 20 degrees F (or colder). Those are challenging types of garments and the fabrics for them are not readily available. The Fast sounds like an interesting warmer weather proposition, though.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and considering staging my own personal challenge. But there’s no reason not to join a whole pack of ladies dedicated to sewing, not buying.
My fabric collection certainly has reached StABLE proportions and I keep buying fabric and awesome patterns that I plan to make “soon”. This past year I’ve been focused on building up my historical costume wardrobe, and now that that’s established (but certainly not finished), I need and WANT to concentrate on building my everyday wardrobe of sewn garments. I’m a real hard-core dress girl, so that’s what I’ll mostly be sewing; however, I do have several tops planned as well. I WANT to wear more clothes that I’ve made. And I definitely have enough of a purchased wardrobe to last me quite a long while without needing to replenish any staples or special items. So, I’m in!

I don’t have a blog, online photo or photo album. I have been “shopping” my current wardrobe since July and have joined the RTW fast by sewing anything new that I want. I am inspired by everyone here!! Jalie sewing patterns from Montreal has underwear, tights and socks patterns. Bra Makers Supply from Hamilton has bra patterns. The only thing I can’t find is shoes. I may have to set up a FLICKR account. My Xmas present to myself is an industrial machine with a servo motor, so I can start sewing my own jeans now, too. I’m sew excited!

YES this invitation is what my sewing room NEEDS. Since May 2012 I have lost 85 pounds. Needless to say I NEED clothes. I have purchased some from one particular store but the sizing isn’t terrific. I thought all figure faults go away with weight loss…DUH. I have a HUGE stash of knits that are screaming for my attention. I also have videos from http://www.craftsy.com: The Ultimate T-Shirt: Fitting & Construction, Pant Construction Techniques, Pant Fitting Techniques.

I can’t believe I’m doing this, but I’m in. I slowly weaned myself off clothes purchases this year by buying thrift/consignment pieces; I’m also a rabid knitter, which helps with sweaters, accessories, socks, etc. I sewed all the way through high school, and over the last year I’ve gotten back into it with excellent results, probably due to having a more patient disposition in my dotage. On top of this, I’ve lost weight, am determined to jazz up my SAHM wardrobe, and have a huge stash of beautiful fabrics. It’s time!

    Hello Sarah Beth
I’ll join in. I’m in the middle of some major life changes – next year I study my fourth year in Psychology – changing careers in the late 50’s is challenging. What i find is that I tend to stop sewing when studying, but I want to keep going, just a bit every day – otherwise I’ll find myself, once again, with nothing to wear.

I’m also running a challenge of my own – Make a Garment a Month – you can find that on my blogger blog – I think one of your RTW fasters will be joining that too.

Next year I will be changing my blog setup to reflect my new life. As you know, I’ve tinkered with WordPress, and I will officially move next year – only under a new name. Or I might use Weebly or Typepad – I’m still exploring which platform to use. I will let you know by 31st December.

I have always loved your blog and style – but funnily, through blogging, I have found that I am developing a sense of style self too – something I never had before 🙂 Blogging does make you think about all these aspects of clothing, as you say – it makes you more accountable.

Posted at 20:16h, 04 December Reply

I agree with your thoughts about developing a style. This is something i have been thinking about lately. I go shopping for fabric but don’t always think about what goes with what. Taking pictures will make me think about styling an outfit before showing it to people. I have to figure out the posting picture think. What is the easiest format to use for the not so techi person.

I understand completely if this does not work for you and will not be offended in the least bit. I appreciate you sending out the invitation and providing encouragement for the sewing community (and what a wonderful community it is!!!) If this does work for you then I must quickly go purchase a new leather jacket and a pair of jeans. I’m determined to make a pair of jeans in 2014 but I need a pair to hold me over 😉

I tried it in 2012, but took it a bit further, allowing myself to buy no RTWs, and no fabric. All I made had to be from my stash. Linings, interfacings, buttons and threads weren’t counted, along with shoes etc. If you saw my stack of patterns, and my room full of fabric, you would understand that it was not hard, and I only broke my New Year’s resolution once, and that was for a beautiful piece of fabric I found in a thrift shop for a ridiculously low price. Looking forward to 2014, when I can clear some more stash!

I have read every post you have written and love to sew… so add me to the list as a RTW Fast Member for 2014!! It makes me very nervous to contemplate… not because I buy a lot of clothes, but because I worry about keeping up with the challenge of actually sewing something that fits and I like. Of course, if I never start, I never will accomplish that!! I will let you know when I have an online photo album or blog spot. Thank you for the inspiration!!

    • Angela
Posted at 10:45h, 09 December Reply

Patti, I COMPLETELY understand what you are saying. I signed up and feel exactly the same way. I buy very few clothes, my wardrobe is tiny tiny tiny and not very nice (something my hubby complains about regularly….). But, keeping up with the challenge to sew things that fit and I wear is still a big one for me. I tend to get stuck in a rut of not-very-attractive clothes. When I have gone shopping I have such a hard time finding anything to fit or that looks decent.

So, with the above and the fact that I have a new machine… I have no excuse to not just force myself to get started!

I also understand. Fitting was my problem last year when I started my challenge. One of my sub-goals was to also learn to sew even though I had been sewing all my life. Although I still gave a way to go focusing on technique and fitting throughout the year has made a big difference. My husband commented after my last garment that he has seen the progress, and so have I.

I think after the year is up you’ll be amazed at what you will be able to accomplish.

I’m in. After I got serious about sewing, I stopped buying clothes. The only garments that I have bought in the last two years are jeans and camisoles. I rather spend time in my sewing room that the mall. I hate to shop. I have enough fabric to keep me busy for a while. I need to replace my knit sweaters so I bought a bond knitting machine so that I could see if it is something that I would stick with before I invest any serious dollars into knitting.

Pants fitting that sounds interesting. Not sure if you are putting that offer out to everyone or not. Other than yoga pants from Silhouette patterns, i have never been satisfied with pants i make. What pattern do you like to use as a base?

        • Debbie Alton
Posted at 16:55h, 12 December Reply

Terry, I am new to blogs and didn’t realize everyone would get the message for Quiet Girl. I can give a few ideas. Most of my customers have one of two problems, either they have to roll their waistband over once or twice, or the crouch digs in to them. For the first group of people, they are short waisted, and Burda pants patterns seem to fits them very well. I would also suggest using one size larger than you normally use because they tend to run very snug. For the other problem, I have a set of patterns I bought as a block and I have samples in each size made up for my customers to try on. Fitting pants is a challenge. If doing it at home, it is mandatory to start with a muslin and I would suggest only making one adjustment at a time. A great source on this subject is Pants For Real People by Palmer/Pletsch. Good luck, enjoy your fast!

I retired in June after 4I years of teaching middle school math. I have the time, PLENTY of fabric, loads of patterns, and a wonderful space for sewing. I began occasionally reading your blog during the first year of no-store-bought-clothes, and was intrigued by the idea.
