I would love to consider this fast. My daughter is getting married in 2018. Can the mother-of-the-bride dress be excluded in the wedding category?

    • goodbyevalentino
Posted at 06:57h, 24 November Reply

Ana – I hope you’ll join in. You’ve got a heck of a year coming up with a daughter getting married! Mother of the Bride dresses are not excluded from the RTW Fast. Bridesmaids’ dresses are simply because they are particular dresses that must be ordered, and wedding dresses certainly are since no bride should ever have to make her dress unless she really wants to!
I understand if this is not the year to take on the RTW Fast, but…… on the other hand, the RTW Fast forces us to learn new skills and accomplish projects we never thought we’d be able to do. One more thought……. if you’d like to join in perhaps you can buy the MoB dress before the end of the year 😉

    Dear Sarah,
I was so excited when I first saw your blog back in 2014! I’ve been following you and RTW “fasting” ever since. I did purchase a handful of items over these four years…10 all together…but about 95% of everything in my closet is made by me. You have been a true inspiration and I always enjoy seeing your posts and reading about your process!
I’ve been working on a wedding for the past few months and currently do the finishing work on all of the dresses. So I’m REALLY looking forward to the 2018 challenge and it’s perfect timing too since I NEED to replace many basic items! I’m so SEW excited and honored to be a part of this. It will be fun! I’ve got a NEW PFAFF machine, FABRICS from almost all of the vendors mentioned and patterns/designs just waiting to come to life!
Can’t wait to get started! Happy Sewing everyone!

I am seriously considering joining. I have plenty of “resources” to get me through – but I didn’t see any rules about not buying new “resources”. HAHA! The fast will definitely help the family budget as daughter #2 is in college. My only caveat is that my boss is retiring next year and my work duties very possibly will be increasing in the new year – a good opportunity for me. We’ll see. Thanks so much, Sarah, for sponsoring this again. It’ll be my first.

Currently doing an assessment of my fabric stash. Purchased over the years, it contains a lot of fabric originally intended for my pre-retirement life. However, if I don’t use it, my survivors will likely curse me for leaving such a rich (unused) resource. A RTW fast might be the galvanizing force to put this investment to use, as I will now have the time to sew with zest. Am seriously thinking of accepting your invitation.

Having said that, I have a large fabric stash that needs using up including some why the heck did I buy that, fabrics. Love the blog and you look great in everything you make. Am jealous of the availability of a wide range of fabrics but you certainly make the most of them.

I would love to participate in this challenge. I do have a couple of questions, though. Is the a required number of items that must be sewn each day/week/month? Or is it just when we need/want something new we sew it instead of purchasing it? And, my other question concerns the type of sewing machine that will be needed. I have just a very basic Singer sewing machine. Will that be adequate?
Thanks so much for your blog and this RTW Fast. I found your blog just after the last fast and wanted to do something on my own but there wasn’t any inspiration or accountability. Looking forward to 2018!!

When I read it I noticed I just felt so uplifted–that told me I was ready and excited to commit! Actually, I have bought very little ready-to-wear the last couple of years anyway–almost everything is too darned big. I have been on the verge of breaking new ground in my sewing for ages. Four years of first house-hunting and then taking on a massive fixer-upper project are coming to an end, so I can devote my attention to making the most of this challenge. What good timing! I am lining up a time to have my sister take a new photo of me and then I’ll register–count on it! Thanks for doing this!

I have been planning to go without buying any clothes and sew up my stash of sewing projects, so I am welcoming this rtw fast. I plan to stick with it, even though I am sure there is no punishment if we must break our commitment to the fast. I am thinking that the advantages will keep us committed to it. My hardest part will be alterations. In the past few years I have lost a lot of weight and I am having a hard time knowing how to manage my new size. I quit sewing my own clothes when I was heavy, sewed instead for others. Then I tried quilting, but I found that I am not a quilter. I love sewing clothing, especially my own. I will need to have my daughter, my partner in sewing, take some pictures of me.
I have been trying to determine if there is anything I need to buy in the next few weeks before the fast begins, but I think I am ready except for the pictures to get started. Sounds like a fun challenge!

My daughter and her husband are building a house and will be moving in with us. As I have been purging and and making room for them in the guest bedroom, I have had to move my overflow of fabric and yarn into my already bulging sewing room. I have a wonderful collection of beautiful fabric, yarn and patterns. I am tired of purchasing clothes that do not fit properly(I am 5’2”) and don’t hold up to even the first washing! I have been following your blog for several years and am always inspired by your creations. I have an awesome sewing machine. What am I waiting for?! This is a wonderful opportunity for me to just “Do It!” I am a little nervous about the year long commitment, but as you mentioned, this is a chance to fine tune sewing skills and fitting issues. Count me in!

Considering this challenge but have questions. I don’t have much garment fabric in my stash. Have some patterns (Tunic bible included. I have made my muslin 👍). Do I need to stock up on some patterns and fabric? I am on IG but not FB. I have really enjoyed your posts, blog, etc

Two questions: How many participated in the RTW fast 4 years ago? I know I did… but I don’t remember the total. And I’m looking forward to more people taking part this year 🙂

Also, I know you are now a Pfaff ambassador. Do you also have a Pfaff coverlock? I’m looking at models that do the 5 thread safety stitch, and I know the lastest Pfaff model does, so I wondered if you were familiar with it. You used to sew on a Bernina I believe… but I don’t remember if you had a Bernina serger or just a sewing machine. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

      Angela,

335 people participated in the 2014 RTW Fast! I do not have a PFAFF 5-thread coverlock but wish I did! I own a Bernina 1150 serger that my husband gave me during my first RTW Fast in 2011.
I’m a PFAFF convert now and encourage you to take a look 😉

Hi! I used to sew when I was a little girl, but fell off it as I got older. I’m thinking of joining and participating in the RTW fast 2018 as I spend way too much money on clothes, but I’m a complete novice, and I’m nervous (but excited!) about sewing my entire wardrobe. Is this something that novices or complete beginners should undertake?

waiting for a girlfriend to decide to do this with me. I rarely buy RTW anymore, such cheap fabric and poor fit, I also have so much that I could probably live out of my closet without sewing anything new, but we all know that will never happen! I think this will be so much fun and I really look forward to meeting everyone and having this community for ideas and motivation! For a picture do you accept head shot or do you want full body?

And a huge THANK YOU for organizing and lining up sponsors. You are a gem

My dad passed away about six months ago, and one of the customs of mourning in my culture is to refrain from purchasing new clothes for a year. I’ve actually been finding it so liberating, and have used the opportunity to start purging my closets.
If I truely need something, I’ve been sewing it from stash.
So I think I’m really ready to start this fast with you guys!
I don’t have a fb account. Does that disqualify me?
And if I fall off the wagon, will I face a firing squad?

      Hadassa,
I’d love to have you join the RTW Fast, and I’m so sorry about the loss of your father. What an interesting custom of mourning….. can you tell me what culture practices this custom?
Facebook is not required, however it is a great way to communicate and the page is a private one. If you fall off of the wagon you can always climb back on but the giveaways are offered to the committed fasters 😉

I’m in! On Black Friday I walked through a couple of stores and kept saying to my friend, “I can sew this,” and “this would be better in other fabric”. There was nothing there that I couldn’t make myself. Shoes, boots and makeup will satisfy my shopping obsession. Thanks for doing this, Sarah. I’d love to have a go at this. I’ve had some problems with my eyesight and haven’t done nearly as much sewing as I hoped I would now that I’m retired. It had got to the stage where I thought I might as well give up sewing. But then I tried finding RTW to fit me – if I tell you I have narrow shoulders but go OUT at the waist you will understand why a FBA was the first thing I did when I broke out a new pattern. Let alone finding things in the right colour. So I’ve decided I’m going to keep sewing for as long as I can.

Lol, I think I only bought about 4 RTW items this year for myself! A parka, a sweater when I realized I forgot to pack one while on a camping trip and had no other choice, and some junk clothes for a Halloween costume.

Does the RTW fast include the whole family, or is buying RTW for my 2 yo daughter and DH ok? What about extreme cold weather stuff? I’m going to try sewing ski pants, but it’s partly an experiment to see if they’re warm enough before trying jackets. We get -30’s here for about 2 months of the year. Also, do custom/commissioned pieces count as RTW or are they ok?

The RTW fast is just for you! You may shop for your family. Stock up on extreme cold weather stuff for yourself before the first of the year if you plan to join the RTW FAST! Did you say -30s? Where do you live?

I am in! I bought a lovely Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.2 last spring and decided I would like to make my clothes from now on. As a teen, I sewed a great many garments, but once I got older and my shape changed after having children, it was so hard to get patterns to fit–I had never had to alter anything before, and found I was not particularly good at it.

However, with a support group to turn to, and Craftsy classes (and others) to learn new skills, I can definitely do this! I will find a decent photo to submit and enroll this week!

Hi Sarah, I am excited and frightened, but I will join in. I’ve been following you for a long time and have never had the guts to commit to this before. I, too, love to shop…I’m a Talbot’s girl, but am very tired of spending $100 for any article of clothing they offer. I also need clearer, more vivid colors than they usually offer. I would say that I’m an intermediate beginner… I feel pretty confident about doing this, but I’d like to request some blog posts specifically about making muslins and also about fabrics. I read other blogs where the sewists just buy fabric at WalMart or Hobby Lobby or even JoAnn’s, but I don’t find those fabrics to be very inspiring. I’ve never tried to order from Mood or the other online fabric shops. But if I’m going to do this, I’d like to be in love with the garments I create. Thank you so much!

I now live in California my husband was offered a job here in 1983 but I still get excited and a little bit teary when my flight touches down at Glasgow Airport because I still call Scotland home.

Hello Sandra, I am Glasgow born and bred, though now live in Kilmarnock Ayrshire. I remember Lewis’s well, shopped there every Saturday with my Mum. I still miss it, and it had a great fabric dept.
It is so nice to meet you via the RTW fast. I am so excited to be a part of it.

I joined the last fast but life happened and while I fasted for 11 months I didn’t sew. In the meantime, I now know what direction my path is going, I have also bought a tremendous stash, have a new sewing room and a new machine and I’ve done a tremendous amount of reading and discovering sewing support . It is time to rise to the challenge. My primary goal is to learn to fit properly as my shape is not quite in proportion. Will I need to repeat the info and picture-happy to do so. Thank you for the opportunity to participate. Ardy Wolynec

    Hello Sarah: I’m signing up!

I need new clothes, no doubt. I made a pair of Jalie Jeans (black stretch denim) in August, after reading your posts about them. I like my new “dress” jeans, and the Jalie pattern company.

Realistically, I don’t know if I’ll make one? two? or many? new pieces of clothing in 2018, but I want to try. I’m self-employed, a professional photographer for corporate and editorial clients, and an adjunct college photojournalism instructor. I need professional clothing for meetings, teaching, and then, comfortable clothing for photo-shoots, that can take wear and tear.

Once in awhile I have a social life, and that’s when I realize that I don’t have enough pretty, new clothing. Perhaps this coming year’s sewing will improve that part of my closet.

I could use improvement on fitting when I make my own clothing (often looks big-ish), and get a bump-up in quality of my clothing sewing. I read your suggestions in your blog about how you adjust patterns and fittings, and continue to be amazed at your talents.

I’m also a quilter, have several sewing machines, a dedicated sewing room (messy, but it’s my mess), and make tuffets on commission.

My sign-up information is via the e-mail address for sign-up..

I’m looking forward to this next year of sewing.

Thank you so much for the invitation. What a great idea and opportunity!!

I’ve been following your blog since 2011 – quietly, in the background – and I’m a big fan.
I live in Canada where the winter temperatures can drop to as low as -30… the prospect of making a winter coat doesn’t daunt me, though, as I’ve already done that! Last year I did the Closet Case Files sew along, and made the Clare Coat, adding thinsulate…and it turned out!
I’m self-taught and don’t have loads of confidence when sewing for myself, but my recent projects have turned out relatively well… so I’m in! Really looking forward to how much I will learn. Thank you!

    Hi!

I just emailed in my R.S.V.P for this

I am so excited for this challenge! I need to use up my big stash of fabric and patterns and get sewing all of the things that I have said that I was going to sew, only apparel shopping to “snoop” and get inspired.

One question: I assume that buying clothing for others is OK? I like to make clothes for others, just sometimes time is not on my side for that.

Thanks for the idea! I look forward to 2018 and what sewing adventures the year will bring. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

    Hi Sarah,

I love the idea of this fast but a bit nervous of whether my sewing skills will be up to it and whatvelse will be required, but as someone else said above it is time to nail my colours to the mast and “just do it”. So I will send in my info in a couple of days.

I started following your blog while you were doing the last fast in 2014 I think and have been fascjnated and so impressed by what you create. I hope this fast will improve my skills and take me out of my sewing comfort zone.

I live in SW France, so if there are any other 2018 fasters living in France it would be great to touch base. So looking forward to joining this challenge.

OK, I’ve been pondering this for a week and have decided to dive in. The rules are straightforward and I think I can do it. As the new president of our local ASG chapter it will give me something to write about and encourage me to sew more for our ‘show and tell.”

I sent my info to sign up by email but I’ve read in a couple comments of FB invitations and being sent a link to sign up…..? Just wondering if I missed an important step? Also wondering if this forum will be from your blog or Instagram primarily?

Anyway ….. hoping my sign up was received. I’m going to use this challenge as an opportunity to be inspired to shop and sew from my stash!

    Happy New Year!!

I just sent my information– talk about last minute, but I just saw the post when it was shared in another FB sewing group today. I guess it’s a good thing I’d already decided that my skill stretch project this year would be tackling my first swimsuit!

    Hi Sarah!

I am excited and going to give this a try. I have two years left in the Army (39 year veteran so far) and am looking forward to transiting to civilian wear; this will give me a great start on fun clothing for my next chapter. It has been many years since I made my own clothing, being petite it will be nice to have garments that fit properly. Hugs and Happy New Year! XOXO

    Hello Sarah,

Quite excited to give this challenge a go. I retired a year ago and while I still adore fashion, my wardrobe needs/focus have changed considerably. It will be fun to see how things unfold and what style evolution’s take place. Can’t wait to get started.
Thank you and Happy New Year.

I’m so excited to do this and also very scared.. I am in the middle of making a long coat right now and am designing my own lining. It’s been over 20years since my last coat, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I got the email but am curious as to whether I should have received a Facebook invite yet. I have not seen that yet. Oh and congrats to the Mood winner, a very nice way to start. Thank you Sarah for this challenge. Maybe I will make a dent in my stash.

[…] 2018 Ready to Wear Fast – Goodbye Valentino hosts an annual Ready-to-wear (RTW) fast, and since I only bought 1 pair of jeans last year, I figured I could definitely cope just fine with sewing more of my own clothes this year and making do with what I already own. There’ll be various prizes given out throughout the year on this one. […]
