01 Nov Houston, Atlanta, and a Giveaway from……!
It’s true. We had no idea how time consuming our first book would be, yet it’s an accomplishment Julie and I are proud of.
I encourage anyone with a book idea to pursue it since you never know who might be interested in publishing your work … or where it might lead. Write a concise outline of your book and follow the publisher’s guidelines for the proposal. We sent our proposal to approximately 10 publishers and received two positive responses. After much deliberation we found C&T Publishing to be a good fit for us.
Last weekend, Julie and I attended the QuiltMarket in Houston, at the invitation of our publishers. The Quilt Market? Julie and I thought it might be an odd fit but we were completely at home at this premiere trade show for the sewing industry. We gave presentations to store owners, signed books, made promotional videos and met many people in the industry.
We brought 30 of the 75 tunics we made.
…and we used or wore all of them!
The most rewarding part of my sewing journey lies in connecting with kindred spirits 😉 While in Houston I met two talented women featured in The Tunic Bible book gallery: Dorcas Ross and Bianca Springer. I’ve corresponded with Dorcas for years, and met Bianca through Julie.
Maybe you recognize Bianca’s adorable waxed cotton tunic she made for the book. Dorcas served as our assistant, and made a fabulous new tunic for the occasion.
Our book signings were a lovely introduction to many shop owners around the country and beyond.
We were greeted by people wearing tunics from The Tunic Bible. Carol, from EESchenck is so cute in her fitted tunic dress with an exposed zipper!
We loved seeing what others were doing with our pattern.
Below is the ruffle neck version made with a fantastic double gauze from Shannon Fabrics.
The most challenging part of our trip was digging up our acting skills we learned from school plays for an upcoming promotional video. Stay tuned….
After we finished our show obligations, Julie and I were free to explore both the Quilt Market and International Quilt Festival.
Kaffe Fasset’s booth was an explosion of color and filled with inspiration.
We loved meeting textile designer Valori Wells…….
and the International Quilt Festival was amazing. So many exceptional works of art…. but my eye is always drawn to quilts with a light-hearted nature or cheerful colors.
I also want to mention that I had the privilege to speak at the annual meeting of the Atlanta chapter of The American Sewing Guild two weeks ago.
What a wonderfully supportive organization this is for all who sew! I had no idea that individual memberships are available regardless of whether a local chapter is in your area. I met Craftsy Instructor extraordinaire, Pamela Howard,
gave a one-hour presentation about my sewing experience, which was followed by a luncheon and member-fashion sew featuring many patterns I recognized.
Dear Readers, I need a vacation and I’m taking one on Thursday.
I’m visiting a magical country and to show my appreciation for your wonderful support through the years, I’m hosting a giveaway featuring a textile of some sort from my trip.
To enter the giveaway, just leave a comment guessing where I might be going by Saturday, November 5th!
Hint #1: It’s not Paris!
Hint#2: Several photographs in the post allude to the destination.
A winner will be announced on Sunday November 6!
Good luck, many thanks, and much love to all 🙂

Posted at 14:07h, 01 NovemberEngland, certainly. If you are in London, go to Shaukat on Old Brompton Road. Most complete selection of Liberty I have ever seen. Also in London, GoldHawkRoad and the Man Outside Sainsbury’s. Certainly you wouldn’t want tweed for tunics, though the great granddaddy of British tweed resides in Carlisle.

I tried to visit Tessuti in Florence, which I have dreamed about since reading about it in one of your blog posts. Unfortunately, they were closed due to vacation. We took a picture of me standing outside the shop with a “sad” face and another one of my husband, with a “happy” face–lol!

Posted at 17:06h, 01 NovemberI just received my copy of the Tunic Bible and have already scanned the majority. It is wonderful! My guess as to destination would be UK as waxed cotton mfg started in England and Scotland and Shannon may refer to Ireland. Whatever your destination have a wonderful and relaxing trip.

Posted at 17:16h, 01 NovemberWell I’ve spotted lots of possible clues as to where you could be travelling – Africa from the waxed cotton, Ireland from the reference to the Shannon, Japan land of the rising sun from beautiful sun filled quilt and also the lovely chrysanthemum print double gauze amongst other possible destinations. Well on balance I’m guessing Japan. Wherever you’re going have a great trip.

I am so sorry I didn’t get to the festival as I live only 4 hours away, but I was visiting grand children in Tulsa in order to babysit. I have always wanted to get there.
