Happy Holidays Giveaway!

26 Dec Happy Holidays Giveaway!

In a world where there is no such thing as bad publicity, I managed to let a November GOMI thread get to me. Who would have thought refashioning my husband’s 10-year-old cashmere sweater would have set off  pages of fallacious comments about my lifestyle by the snarkers?

During this holy season and busy month I completely removed myself from the negative GOMI energy and returned to my musical roots. This December instead of sewing, I practiced the piano and presented two Christmas programs with my father. The break was refreshing and renewing, and now I’m ready to get back to sewing and blogging 🙂

The good news is I did not break the RTW Fast and I congratulate all of the brave souls who gave up shopping for sewing this year! We have only 5 days left, and I encourage anyone who wants to improve one’s sewing skills along with saving lots of $$$ to go for it in 2015!

For an End of the Fast and a Happy New Year celebration,  I’m giving away a beautiful book I recently received from Laurence King Publishing, entitled The Swatch Book.

swtchbook3d

A lovely book to enhance all garment sewing……………………..

This easily navigable resource provides 125 swatches of the most recognised and widely used varieties of fabric to encourage consideration of not just their aesthetic appeal but also their structure, feel and weight. Natural fabrics such as cottons, silks, wools and linens are included, as are artificial and synthetic fabrics like nylons, polyesters, microfibers, metallics and soya fabrics, and fabrics made from alternative plant fibers like bamboo and hemp.

With information on fibres, basic construction of fabrics, weights, construction, and weave comparison, the book will help student fashion designers to make informed textile choices based upon an understanding of raw materials together with the processes that make up a fabric. The book will be useful for anyone who works with fabrics and is the ideal companion to Fabric for Fashion: The Complete Guide.

I believe The Swatch Book will be helpful to both new and seasoned sewists, and should be a great asset for online fabric shopping.

To enter the giveaway just leave a comment and the winner will be announced

DECEMBER 31ST, 2014.

Good luck in the giveaway and Happy Holidays to all!!

I’ve missed you 🙂

So happy you had a happy holiday. You are so blessed to still have your father……and who cares about snarky remarks…some people just need to be like that….so sad.

This is a book I was just looking at online. Since I live over two hours away from the nearest fabric store unless you really want to count Wal-Mart, I usually resort to ordering fabric online. However it’s always a surprise really to see what I get in the mail as I can’t touch and feel the different fabrics. I would love this book as a reference guide!

I think the net is fully of rude, unhappy people. But be assured that everyone who is on the net, sooner or later, gets victimized; thus you are not alone. Having said that I’m sorry that happened. I love reading your blog. All of it. Thanks for writing it.

Ugh. GOMI. I hate that site. What an awful, negative place. It just encourages judgement, gossip, snark (the nasty kind–not the funny kind!) and overall just beastly behavior by supposed grownups. Sorry you got caught up.in their web of hate. It’s a sad statement that those kind of sites even exist.

I’m still kind of new and learning my way through sewing. A book like this would be very helpful to me when I’m navigating patterns…. And possibly avoiding that site myself!

Oh man. now I wonder am I already ON that site???

I have just recently reentered the world of sewing and finding so many new things to learn. I have completed a few simply sewing projects but would like to go onto more complex construction like jackets , pants and coats. This seems to be one of the resources to help me on my way.
    Thanks.

WOW!!! It seems the internet blogging world can be quite cruel!! We adults can sometimes be like children but that’s ok. We can let others be entitled to their own opinions….but we do not have to except them….

You are a blessing to the sewing community and an inspiration to many!! Keep on keeping on and those that care about you look forward to sharing sewing stories in 2015. God bless you and your family this year.

I am appalled to know that you were slammed by a bunch of small-minded people. Shame on them — and hooray for you, using the healing power of music to get your groove back. I am seriously contemplating doing a RTW fast in 2015… Will be completed retired from parish ministry as of Jan 1, and I think sewing will be a good counter-balance to my watercolor painting… The Swatch Book reminds me of a similar resource that we received, as home ec majors, at UMass Amherst, in 1974. Too bad I transferred out of that major after one semester!! I never did learn to do bound buttonholes properly…

    Dear Sarah,
I’m so glad you shared your GOMI story. The world is indeed filled with cynical and snarky people. Imagine being one of them and not loving something as passionately as we do sewing. And your music…and my painting. I believe those are God-given gifts and talents. How sad it would be if your only talent was the ability to hurt others. You are blessed with style and flair and the grace to rise above the negative chatter. Happy New Year to you, my friend. Here’s to meeting up one day!

Sarah, I am aghast at your online experience and completely in sync with how the negative ugly comments affected you. I must say that your sweater remake inspired me to refashion a very old sweater my mother-in-law made over 30 years ago for my husband. Sadly, it did not turn out well, but was well worth the effort. The RTW fast has been such a rewarding experience, and I know my sewing skills, interest, and focus would not be where they are today without your blog and inspiration. I feel that you and others who have been on this yearlong journey are kindred spirits that enrich my life. Joy to you and yours.

I also had to Google GOMI because I had never heard of it before and quite frankly I’m glad I didn’t know about it and I will never visit there again! Who are these people anyway and why would anyone ever post something there? They are like vultures just feeding off of one another. Who needs that much negativity in his/her life? They all need to get a life and do something positive instead of trying to tear others down.

Here’s my solution when all those cup-half-full people try to drag me down. Visualise a 61-year-old dancing, as if no one was watching, while singing louding and sooooo out of tune, as if no one was listening, to Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off”.
And if I’m still feeling the pain of their words, I do it all over again!!!!!!
Remind yourself of all those who appreciate your blogs and as I did last week, wonder why you have been a little quiet of late. Shake it off and sew, sew, sew in whatever style and whatever fabric YOU want to use.
    Here’s to a creative 2015.

I wondered where you’d gone off to. So sorry you were so discouraged by GOMI. The world is full of unhappy people who enjoy being unhappy. But I LOVE your blog and love seeing what you make, and I totally get what you’re trying to say about saving money and not buying expensive stuff that doesn’t fit anyway.

So sorry that GOMI set its sights on you. I’ve visited GOMI from time to time and while I think some of the commentary has a place IF IT WAS NOT ANONYMOUS, most of it is just drivel and piling on and negativity. Meh.

I’m glad you rose above. Being on the internet means developing a very thick skin, which I know can be hard to do when barbs are thrown in your direction.

Anyway … Merry Christmas (late) and welcome back! Don’t let the snarkers get you down!

Anyone who dares to stick her neck out–on-line or in the flesh–will sooner or later be the target of trash talk. Whether a fine gardener, a community leader, a sewing adventurer, any excellence or attempt at excellence, will be critiqued by narrow hearts and minds. Better to wash off the ill-aimed critique (taking a moment to see if there’s a kernel of truth) and keep on keeping on. Easier said than done because, well, it does hurt. Been there….

I believe there is room for all life styles on blogs. I happen to choose your blog because it talks to my interest in good quality fabric and clothing. I love getting ideas from you and fellow Fasters. Do I Like everything Others make? No, but neither does my style appeal to everyone. No reason to make nasty comments when we don’t agree. I learn from others and enjoy seeing your creativity and hearing about your sewing experiences.
GOMI seems like sour grapes to read. I would rather see and read about the successes on your blog. You are inspiring and very creative. Please continue your great blog and know how much we all care about you and your input.

I have been following your blog for over a year and love the admire your grit. You had a challenging year for sticking with your challenge. Most people would have understood if you had to drop it during the flurry of events and such leading up to your daughter’s wedding. You however did beautifully and your clothes were wonderfully executed and an inspiration. I think what you did with the cashmere was a way to recycle something that was not being used into something beautiful. I know you will not let negative thoughts get you down. People have their own issues that they then try to put upon others. Please keep up the wonderful blog and you have inspired me and their negative comments have helped me cement my decision to do a RTW fast for 2015. I’m a little nervous, I love to sew, however am not as good with fabric choices and I tend to choose colors I like and not those that place my coloring to advantage, lol. I do have an old leather jacket that may need to be restyled for 2015. I am doing this challenge as I take on a challenge I have to lose my “baby weight” in the next year. What a shame for the GOMI, which, unfortunately, I did not even know existed until now as I had to look up the meaning. What a shame! I also could relate to your feeling ‘out of your sewing groove for many weeks’ as I too have had that exact feeling although mine have lasted much longer than that at times. I expect that the music was rather cathartic for you and a real blessing for those who had the pleasure of hearing you. What a wonderful time you must have had with your father
    .
After reading about GOMI, I visited it once (which was more than enough for me). I’m not going to allow others to rob me of the pleasure of reading my sewing blogs, and it was pretty evident that the negative spin they place on various blogs would have done just that. There are so many people who, not only enjoy your blog, but are encouraged and inspired by it. I am in awe of all the people you have inspired to fast from RTW. Just think of all the garments that have been sewn because you took the time to blog about your own personal journey! And each of those garments represents a venture in creativity by their seamstresses that they otherwise might not have had. Please don’t let the negativity at GOMI steal all that from you and from the people you encourage and inspire!

I don’t know why but I am always surprised by the number of negative people out there. The internet makes it easy for people to hide behind their laptops without a care to other’s feelings. Your blog is WONDERFUL and I know I mentioned my daughter was going to try to use the techniques you shared to resize sweaters. Well she did and thanks to that post she has some sweaters that actually fit so much better and you’ve made a 15 year old girl very happy. Don’t worry about the negative people (though I know it’s hard). Know your fans love what you share with us!

Take care and have a fantastic 2015!!! Thank you for this book give-away opportunity!

Never heard of GOMI until now but I HAVE heard of Goodbye Valentino and have loved every post you have done. So glad to know you are coming back as I have missed your posts immensely! But I know a break is needed along the way to refresh and renew. As for the book, this looks like an excellent resource for my beginner sewing classes and I would love to win it so I can share it with them. What a great giveaway! Thank you!

Sarah, you are a very talented lady, and so generous to share your sewing creations and knowledge with the rest of us. Your blog was the first one I found when I returned to garment sewing, and it never fails to inspire me.
That GOMI nastiness is distasteful and truly a waste of time. I agree with one of your other commenters – let’s have a GOMI fast.
Thank you for the opportunity for the book!

I’m commenting not for an entry, but to let you know how much I enjoy your posts and your fashion sense. There isn’t any way to please everyone, and it should never be the aim….just know that you’ve been an inspiration for lots of people to get back into sewing and that’s a major gift.

I seem to have somehow lost my original post so here’s the condensed version: If GOMI is snarking on you then you’re now officially a celebrity! Seriously, I liked the sweater refashion blog, Since I do a lot of “thrifting,” refashioning is often necessary and sweater knits can be tricky.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I must admit I am challenged by the very idea that anyone would snipe at you because you refashioned your husband’s cashmere sweater. I thought it was absolutely adorable. Oh well. You can’t please all of the people all of the time.

Just know that you are doing a wonderful job and please keep on doing what you do so well. So glad you took December to recharge your batteries. Too many of us never do that – which leads to burn out, and so many other unpleasant things. I, too am taking a break and don’t intend to submit anything new for sewinginsight.com until the new year. One of the first things I intend to post in 2015 is an updated list of my favorite blogs and yours is one of the new additions. I thoroughly enjoy reading your posts – even if I don’t always reply, and I think the word needs to get around this great resource for fashion sewing. Like Peggy said… ‘IGNORE THE HATERS’! They’re just envious of your great style and taste..

You are truly blessed to have your dad and to be able to share Christmas programs with him. I lost my dad in 2010 and will forever cherish the times we shared.

The swatch book, as you said, would be a great asset to home sewers of all skill levels and ages. I, too, would love to get my hot little hands on such a valuable resource. Although I’ve probably been sewing since.before many of our readers were born, there are no doubt lots of things in this book for me to learn and benefit from. I think it is simply beautiful that you are willing to share this with others. You are truly exemplifying the spirit of the Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa season.

Take care and have a blessed and prosperous New Year. Looking forward to seeing all the great things you’ll be posting next year.

I certainly enjoyed being a part of Goodbye Valentino this year and sharing in all the news and fashions. A few years ago, I did a similar “fast” on my own, buying no new clothes for an entire year. I must say it was difficult the following year to go out and buy again, as one is more aware and discerning, not only of costs, but of their own talents in making their own. One also has developed a certain confidence in oneself and a discovery of what is really a “need” and what is a “want.” Thank you for sharing your journeys this past year–it has made me take a similar pledge of “minimalism” for 2015. which will extend over several areas in my life, even beyond fashion. I look forward to hearing all your journeys of self-discovery in fashion in 2015!

You’re blood has given me so many ideas on how I can take second hand clothing and renew it. Can’t wait to follow you into 2015. Keep up the amazing work.

(PS I had to look up what GOMI was and now that I know, I find it appalling. It sounds like the childish “slam tables” that students bearing a grudge would use to malign professors in college. There is enough negative destructive behavior in this world without needing GOMI to add to it. )

thanks for making such a positive, creative, and smart influence on the lives of so many. And, we’re all connected and can get any question answered! Wow, can’t really beat that.

You know you have arrived when you have been GOMI-ied.

I have enjoyed and been inspired by ALL of your posts. Your blog fills a niche, and as soon as I found it I thought, “Finally, a woman around my age who sews things I love and would both make and wear!” I have been reading it ever since and love to go back and look at old posts. Please continue! You’re a classy sewist and have given me many usable and effective ideas.

I was just thinking that I would like to learn more about fashion fabrics, not only just about types but what and how each type will affect construction of the garment or how a type of fabric will hung when made into a garment. Anyway, still a lot to learn. Looks like a great book to look into.

Oh my goodness. Don’t let the haters get you. I don’t really care whether I win the swatch book. I do care that you have been hurt by people that do not know you. You clearly have a beautiful, creative and sensitive spirit. Those of us that follow you appreciate all that we know you to be. I haven’t sewn a stitch but you inspire me. I’ve been on crutches, had shots on my knees, moved into a new house and started a dental renovation. Somehow I have not gotten to the sewing part. However, I find inspiration in your posts. For every snarky comment out there about your refashioning of a sweater there are at least a hundred that think highly of you. Shake the dust from your feet and move on to the next “city” much as you have chosen to do. Blessings, health and prosperity to you and your loved ones in 2015. May this year bring you more positive personal recognition than ever before. I will look forward to your next beautiful garment, refashioned or otherwise.

I read GOMI once, when I was mentioned briefly, then spammed the site so I wouldn’t see it on my blog stats. My thought was, if these people spent half the time they spend on GOMI building something for themselves, instead of creating content for someone who’s making advertising bucks off the site, they’d probably be a whole lot happier. And at 57, I honestly don’t have time to worry about what they think.

    Dear Sarah,
I’m sorry that a “hater” got to you, and am happy you worked through it. No matter what business you are in, success in any form produces those who will allow jealousy to rule their world. They try to hurt you and bring you down. I am an English teacher and talk about this concept in literature all the time with my students (Shakespeare would have had nothing to write about!). You are a beacon of positive energy for all who read your blog! Several years back, on the website Pattern Review, there was a star reviewer who resigned from the site because of negative comments slung by haters. Shocking that it even happens in sewing! You have single-handedly motivated me and thousands of others to get back to sewing. I got a new serger for Christmas and am going to try the RTW fast for 2015! You rock and we all know it!!

Wow, reading through some of the GOMI threads is quite entertaining, in a “I can’t look away from the train wreck” sort of way. The “hamcats” sometimes turn on each other, quite viciously, and will drone on for pages about the dumbest of minutiae.

They fancy themselves to be quite clever with their stupid animated gif’s and overuse of emoticons.

Heaven help you if they get a whiff of “monetization” of your blog. They will then fly, like bats out of hell, to gang up on you while “rolling their collective eyes so hard,” LOL. They will drop you from their blog reader (a blessing, in my opinion) pronto. Because, of course, we all have all the time in the world to forever provide free content. Everything for them must be FREE, FREE, FREE.

You’ll see a lot of “I liked her until she started doing sponsored posts, or shilling for xyz, or selling ads on her site, or selling her sewing patterns.” They must all live in lalaland, where there is no need for them to get paid for their hard work either.

Here’s an idea, hamcats, if certain element of the SBC, as you call it, are so offensive to you, don’t let the door hit your collective arses on the way out.

Sarah, keep up the good work that you do for all of us out here who really appreciate your blog.

Hi Sarah. I’ve been following you for a few years now and am always amazed at what you do. I had no idea what GOMI was until I read your post. Upon checking it out all I can say is, I wish I had as much free time as some of those people do!! As the saying goes: haters gonna hate. Take it all with a grain of salt. By the way, in Japanese the word for garbage (trash, rubbish) is gomi. Just saying.

Your site is saved as an app on my laptop because your sewing expertise amazes me. As a rule, I NEVER COMMENT ON ANYONE’S BLOG, but I had to comment on yours after the incident from that very negative website. You did not deserve what these people have tried to do to your reputation. Keep your head up and ignore the negative, which is very difficult because we are all humans with feelings. You do wonderful work and I thoroughly enjoy your site.

May you and your family have a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year!

Dear Sarah, I hope the outpouring of love in all these replies to your post will assure you that you are followed with more admiration and affection than you dreamed possible. I know that I have clicked on your logo daily for the last month, only to be sadly disappointed until today. You have inspired me so much, to reach beyond my skill set and to do more with what I have. You have also introduced me to a part of life in the South, which is very different from mine here in Minnesota. I will probably never meet you but I am very grateful to you for what you do in your blog.

Of course the GOMI’s hurt you deeply, that is how they draw their followers, by being so caustic and Joan River-ish in their comments. Commenters said that Carolyn made “the same old sheath dress over and over”; well, a sheath dress is exactly what Anna Wintour wears consistently and I don’t see them criticizing HER. You are a very sensitive soul; it is evident in your writing. Don’t let the ugliness of the GOMI’s stain the beauty of what you create. Don’t give them that power. We need you.

Negative events are always a part of our lives. What distinguishes their impact is in the way we choose to respond. Just like the projects that could have been jettisoned, you once again took a lemon and made lemonade. It is why I look forward to your posts and greatly admire all you are doing. You are one of the rays of sunshine in a sometimes gloomy world. Thanks!

I had never heard of GOMI until your post. Naturally I had to see what you were referring to and I can’t believe that there are such small-minded people who have nothing better to do than be critical of a multi-talented person. You have inspired me many times in not only fabric selection, but sewing techniques and patterns. We are basically the same size so I already have an idea of what the garment might look like on me. Looking forward to your next projects and the Swatch book sounds very interesting.

Please don’t let negative energy from “the darker side of Internet” affect you. There will probably always exist jealous people and we can probably not do anything about it more than hoping that they’ll find a hobby of their own, which will give them the same kind of happiness that sewing bring to us.
Your sewing projects and your blog is incredibly inspiring and it has encouraged me along with a couple of hundred other women around the world to take a year off from buying RTW in favour of making our own clothes. Imagine! A whole year! Wow! 🙂

I was not familiar with the nasty review site you mentioned. So I stopped over to visit it and by reading just a few, I knew this was not for me. If you can’t find something nice to say, don’t say anything at all. (I dislike all forms of negativity, especially when the purpose of a hobby as enjoyable as sewing/designing is suppose to inspire happiness and a sense of accomplishment!) What I loved most about Goodbye Valentino was the positive, inspiration that I received. Sewing all of my adult life, then taking breaks here or there and finding your site allowed me to see what a vast group of very talented ladies from all over the globe are doing. This positive energy help me to get back into the hobby that I love….for relaxing and being creative! So glad I found you and this fine group of very accomplished, imaginative group of ladies. Hi Sarah
Some people have nothing better to do in their life than try and make people feel as miserable as they do. You should be so proud of yourself for everything that you have done over the past few years and the joy you bring to everyone that reads your blog. You have got so many people back into sewing and pushing themselves to achieve more than they could every dream. myself included. Your beautiful clothes are a credit to you and have inspired me to start sewing again. At the moment I am fighting breast cancer and decided to get my new sewing machine that I bought in January 2013 out and get back into sewing. The joy that I had in making a fully lined dress and taking the time to do alot of hand sewing on it including the zip was just what I needed, I even took the time to make and adjust a muslin so that I got the right fit. I start radiation on Monday the 5th for 5 weeks, but have already cut on a couple of patterns to make my next two dresses as I have a wedding at the end of January and the other in February. Hopefully this will help me relax through the next few weeks. Once again you are a very strong person and you have to feel sorry for people that obviously lead a miserable life and try and bring people down their level.
I would love to be in the draw for this gorgwous book. Wishing you all the very best for 2015 and look forward to reading your words of inspiration in the New Year. Kind Regards Sue Christchurch New Zealand

I’m too late for the drawing I think, but this is a book I have dreamed about! I have two excellent books on fabrics but no swatches in either. This would a great way to learn what fabrics are what! If you go into a store where you get little help, you know how hard it can be to find the fabrics called out on the back of patterns!
Thanks for sharing this book info! It makes me happy just thinking about it. I’ll be saving my sewing allowance for this one! I also am just now sewing my first dress in 10 years so I think I will do the RTW challenge this year too! Okay…So did these negative people think this was “Goodbye Targe Boutique”? (For those who do not know, that’s Target Store’s old clothing line.) Of course we want to be exposed to something a little beyond what we have or do – THAT IS HOW WE LEARN! And for one, I am happy to be shown techniques and supplies that are beyond my capability. You see, I want to become a better seamstress, not a lesser one! Keep up the good work, “Goodbye Valentino” And yes, I have purchased clothing items from Target – If the price is right and the quality is there, why not?

You are a lady of style and class and also very talented in your sewing and restyling of unused items – I wish I could come up and execute some of your ideas to your exacting standards, please do not let negativity get to you they are not worth it pure and simple.

Shoot!!!! I would have LOVED that book. I guess that will teach me to be more of a regular reader of your blog, not that I would have won anyway, lol – I’m not that lucky.
I’m curious what GOMI stands for. Never heard the term before, so (of course) “googled” it, but didn’t really find much help.

At any rate, I get that people were making snarky, judgemental comments about you. I think that it’s a given that you have more disposable income than the average person (most people CAN’T buy Valentino) but to ME, that’s part of the charm of your blog! You COULD/CAN afford it, but choose to sew it instead!! And show the rest of us how to do it, in the process! I call that GENEROUS!!!
    Glad you’re back.

PS I’ve trying to figure out what scuba fabric is. I read on SOMEONE’s blog that Joanne’s carried it, but when I asked a clerk if she knew if they had it/carried it, she told me to look in the Utility fabric section. Another one said to look in the swimsuit fabric section (insert rolling eyes) I’m pretty neither of them would have known what it is, so I didn’t bother to tell them that I was pretty sure it was a doubleknit.
