14 Mar Giveaway and a New Sewing Interest!
My obsession with sewing has led me to a new place – pattern drafting. I’ve become so interested in achieving the perfect fit attainable only through sewing (or having a personal tailor) that I enrolled in Patternmaking Basics: The Bodice Sloper with Suzy Furrer
The end result of the class will be a bodice sloper adaptable for many uses. Suzy Furrer a most competent, serious, professional and well-spoken instructor explains how fashion designers work from a single sloper to create dozens of designs.
I often attempt to customize a purchased pattern without understanding how ONE little change affects the entire fit. Additionally, while I’ve made great strides in fitting myself, fitting my back is still an issue that I am determined to tackle!
I have absolutely nothing to show you since I am busy trying to absorb this fine instructor’s knowledge!
I don’t know where the class will lead me, but isn’t that true of many endeavors? Maybe I will develop a pattern or maybe I’ll simply acquire the knowledge to easily fit my back with purchased patterns.

In the meantime I received an awesome book from Laurence King Publishing to be released in April, entitled Sewing for Fashion Designers by Anette Fischer.
The comprehensive book is essential for anyone wanting to learn about fashion construction. Illustrated with fashion images that demonstrate techniques used by top designers, Sewing for Fashion Designers teaches all of the professional sewing methods one needs ranging from sewing equipment, pattern layout, fabric composition, stitches, seams, seam finishes, garment construction, and fabric-specific techniques needed to design with materials from lace to neoprene.
It is simply a fantastic 300+ page book, loaded with over 1000 color photographs along with instructions on every sewing technique imaginable.
As always, it is my personal policy to share these wonderful books I receive with my cherished readers in a giveaway.
Simply leave a comment to be entered into the giveaway. The lucky winner will be announced on TUESDAY, MARCH 17.
Now…… back to the classroom and good luck to all giveaway contestants!
Until soon 🙂

The end result is a perfectly fitting skirt with so many options. I have the bodice sloper, and one of these days I’ll tackle it. I can’t wait to read about your experience. Posted at 10:16h, 14 MarchI am very interested in learning more about how to fit any pattern to make a wearable garment for myself. I have been trying to absorb all I can from video’s or blog’s such as your own. It is so generous of you to do a giveaway and it is great of you to post this information as this is a book that I had never heard about and will have to look into purchasing it if I am not the lucky winner. Best of luck with your new venture in fitting and I look forward to reading your post regarding this subject.

Posted at 10:17h, 14 MarchSuzy’s class on the Bodice Sloper is brilliant. My body measurments are all over the place and as a result anything I made did not fit correctly and definitely looked home made.
Since completing her class I have learnt such a lot about the shape of my body, made a super sloper, and now have many excellent and different new tops to wear. I also found Suzy extremely helpful when you have a problem with your fitting. You will really enjoy her teaching and learn a great deal.

Posted at 10:39h, 14 MarchI’m very anxious to see how your bodice sloper comes out from this class. I signed up for the class and worked on a sloper with a group of friends. Mine was a total disaster. I would have posted questions, but I didn’t even know what to ask. I think our fault lied in our measuring.I don’t think there was anything wrong with the instruction or the class. When I get time I do want to try to revisit this. I’m anxious to see how yours turns out.

Posted at 10:48h, 14 MarchGood luck with the pattern drafting course. I did one several years ago and made myself, among other things, a full length coat, a Max Mara copy, and a leather jacket to my own design. It is very exciting and eye opening. However I seem to be missing the creativity streak so usually prefer to use a printed pattern which I adapt to my measurements etc.

Posted at 11:12h, 14 MarchI so agree with you about Suzy’s sloper class. I found it so interesting and informative. But I have a problem using my sloper to adjust commercial patterns. Thanks for always sharing with us all your projects!

Posted at 11:47h, 14 MarchI did Suzy Furrer’s bodice sloper class last spring and used my moulage to create a custom dress form. The sloper blocks are wonderful to create your own designs. The experience of drafting your own slopers is also tremendously useful in solving fitting issues. Enjoy the class.

Posted at 11:48h, 14 MarchCreating a good sloper will likely take a number of iterations, hopefully you’ll be more patient than I was. lol I found when you fix one area, it showcases issues in another area.. But if you persevere, you’ll end up with a better place to start to pattern draft than a frankenpattern.

Posted at 11:58h, 14 MarchGood luck with your new class. I just spent 2 solid weeks working up a muslin of Butterick 5924. Was determined to have the darts fall in the right place. The sleeve to fit smoothly and hang correctly. In doing so, the back became my biggest challenge. It is really hard to fit yourself with only a husband and pictures on your phone to help you. What a journey! Hope your sloper is all that you want it to be.

Posted at 12:04h, 14 MarchYou go girl. It’s so helpful to have once you understand how to use it. I’m almost done with my bodice sloper and already see the benefit. I used it to make a dress. I went way outside comfort zone and did it without a muslin and it came out great!

Posted at 12:10h, 14 MarchI LOVE taking Craftsy classes. Probably because I can watch them over and over until I fully understand a concept and have put it into practice. I’m currently working on a project with Kenneth D. King for his Fly Front Jacket class which I started this winter – better hurry up and finish it – spring is almost here! I haven’t taken any of their fit classes, maybe hearing about your experience will encourage me to try one. PS: I think this book would be perfect for an experienced sewist & wannabe designer.

Posted at 12:19h, 14 MarchI have bought every Suzy Furrer class except the New pants sloper one!! I love me some Craftsy!!! I would love to own that beautiful book. I just made a dress for my daughter for prom and I had to fit the dang thing on her!! It was eye opening to discover that the pieces did not fit her body at all. I knew this already but in practice it became super real!!! I decided I am going to make a dress form for her and myself. She is 18 which is that wonderful age where there are not as many bumps and curves yet!! Me…I am a weightlifter so I have issues with sleeves and thighs…booty too in addition to all the other stuff that comes with being 47 so I gotta make a dress form and moulage for myself!! I will post my moulage on craftsy and follow yours too. Have a great weekend!!

Posted at 12:21h, 14 MarchYes! I enjoy the pattern cutting/drafting classes I attend and have also watched Suzy Furrer’s lesson on bodice and skirt – I have all of her courses but haven’t watched everything yet. I think she’s a great teacher. My classes use a different set of instructions so I have to follow them, of course. They’re still great to have. I’d love to win the book- sounds very interesting

Posted at 12:35h, 14 MarchWelcom to the Suzy Furrer fan club! You will not be disappointed.
I have taken all of Suzy’s Craftsy classes and it has completely changed the way I approach sewing clothes. I know that I can look at any style and draft my own pattern from it, or take any commercial pattern and quickly adapt it for a personal fit. I’m about to begin work on my pants sloper and can’t wait to finally own and wear custom made jeans and trousers.

Posted at 12:58h, 14 MarchYou will be so glad when you finish this course and can fit your own back. Taking pattern drafting and draping was the best thing I ever did in sewing for myself. And making a duct tape dressform so I could actually fit my own back and shoulders. That dress form exploded but not until I had figured out the nuances of my own fit.

Posted at 13:31h, 14 MarchDrafting patterns from scratch is so much fun. Be sure to take accurate measurements and measure accurately while drafting. A small error magnifies quickly! I’d love to see this book. It sounds interesting although most designers I know are not necessarily good sewers. I’d like to see a book by the sample sewers.

Posted at 14:28h, 14 MarchHi there,
Sounds like you are entering an exciting new phase and such an adventure!
I have the amazing Helen Joseph Armstrong book – Pattern Making for Fashion Design ( fourth edition)
but, of course, like most sewists, I have more than one book in my sewing room.
Are you like me, researching and then researching again and learning various techniques and then picking the one that suits you best?? Oh dear, another book that I would love. When will this love affair in the sewing room end……………………….NEVER.
Good luck everyone. So looking forward to you letting us know how you get on with this new journey and what you think of the class. I must admit, I think I am more of a visual learner as I sometimes misinterpret the written instructions!! So, I guess the perfect combination is the book and the Craftsy class too.
Can’t wait to see you in my inbox soon. Happy pattern drafting.xx

At 5’10” with broad shoulders and long arms, I have been “adjusting” patterns since I was 10 and sometimes it works and sometimes not… Now at 65 there are other things changing too (thanks gravity)…Happy Sewing

Not right now though as I’m busy on wedding gown, bridesmaid dresses and maybe even something for the mother of the bride, me, to wear! I’ve been wishing for more pattern drafting understanding as I try to modify patterns to just what the bride has in her head.

Posted at 16:39h, 14 MarchAnother who has participted in several of Suzy’s Craftsy classes and find them excellent. The idea of having basic well fitting blocks / slopers is so appealing and will be such a wonderful resource once achieved, its a jouney I’m on as well. In fact the new sewing book sounds very complimentary (in every sense) …being able to sew fitted garments with a professional designer finish is the ideal 🙂 and having blocks and a kit bag of industry techniques just makes this easier and more enjoyable.

Posted at 16:52h, 14 March} have all of Suzy’s classes except her very newest one. I’ve watched the bodice sloper class but have yet to make a sloper. But one of my goals! I do have a dress form that I made to my size using Kenneth King’s method and also using Paul Gallo’s draping class on Craftsy. I am truly a Craftsy addict! I just need to view all my sewing classes! I’ve been sewing for 50 years now starting as a young child but so much available now to learn new techniques! I want to absorb so much knowledge! Thanks for your blog and thanks for the opportunity for your book giveaways! Looking forward to seeing your future posts about your bodice sloper!

I’m retiring the end of April, we are moving to New Mexico and part of the goal is to find a home that has a space for my weaving looms and sewing machines. Then I plan to go through Suzy’s classes one by one. This book looks fantastic! One can never have enough reference books. I should know, smile.

Posted at 21:56h, 14 MarchI have taken some pattern drafting years ago with Anne Hyde – does anyone remember her – she gave classes for a week or two with accommodation in Denver and just outside in Winter Park. Also some great fitting tips with Ron Collins recently at Sawyer Sewing Centre class in Victoria, B.C. Good fit makes all the difference – would like to add this book to my collection.
Enjoy your blog very much
Amy
Posted at 22:15h, 14 MarchI can’t wait to read more about your progress in the class. I was hoping weeks with Susan Khalje would teach how to fit – that’s at least one of the reasons I was justifying saving up my pennies – but it sounds like it wasn’t enough? Starting from your own personal pattern sounds ideal though! Also, while I love collecting books, no need to enter me. I’d rather someone else have a bit of luck.

I recently did susan’s class and quickly enrolled in all the craftsy classes that Susan offered. I have made a few things and still cannot believe how nicely fitted those turned out to be. She is very helpful and you can learn a lot about fitting just from the discussion section. Hope you enjoy it. I would love to win the book. Here’s to pretty dresses. Thank you!

Posted at 17:55h, 15 MarchI too am interested in pattern fitting! It drives me crazy when I think everything is fitting perfect and then try it on and yuk! I’m sure this book would be a great help. I’m finding my half-time job is getting in the way of my sewing so am retiring in June to start the last 1/3 part of my life. I plan on dedicating it to the things I never had time to do while raising kids, working, fighting that crappy breast cancer and working. This 1/3 is just for me to explore my sewing and art hobbies to my content! Hubby needs to find his own hobbies!

Posted at 19:59h, 15 MarchI have been sewing for years and love sewing for my teenage granddaughters, now. Your web site has encouraged me to do more sewing for myself. I agree, getting the fit perfect for myself can be trying. When I had a younger figure it was easier but now I have decided to brush up on fitting myself with my “new” “older” figure. Thank you for your blog.

Posted at 23:34h, 15 MarchI used to make pageant dresses, and I pretty much had to make my own patterns. They got tossed with moving so many times. I really wanted to remake some of them, but I just didn’t know where to begin. Good luck with your new interest!

Posted at 06:56h, 16 MarchWhat a generous giveaway – from the preview reviews it seems a fabulous book! As a very enthusiastic, but relatively new sewer, I realise that fit is a core issue in producing self made garments that look relatively professional. To this end, earlier today I enrolled in Susan Khalje’s online course in order to experience her approach to some of the sewing challenges that you mention, as well as the bodice sloper course. [The 50% discount season is so helpful – these two courses have been on my ‘wishlist’ for a very long time!] Thank you for your very thoughtful, thorough blog — and for the opportunity to participate in the giveaway.

Posted at 09:06h, 16 MarchLike you and so many others, I am intrigued by the idea of developing my own slopers and have purchased Suzy’s classes. I just learned from the comments about the new pants sloper class and need to add that one, too.!
Thanks for all the inspiration you provide with your blog.

Posted at 10:10h, 16 MarchAs a lifelong sewer who has recently started sewing my own clothes again, I desperately need this book. My current method is to take an existing garment and make a pattern from it. I am pretty sure there are better methods…..

Posted at 12:57h, 16 MarchI think that learning to make a sloper and the desire to draft your own patterns is a natural outcome for those of us that are truly committed to the art of making clothes.

Posted at 13:40h, 16 MarchOh, how you will enjoy pattern drafting! It’s a fascinating subject, fun to mess about with, fun to practice on your family and/or pets. You might also try to find The Cut of Women’s Clothes and The Cut of Men’s Clothes by Norah Waugh, as good reference tools … also anything by Adele Margolis.

Posted at 15:29h, 16 MarchMy local fabric/sewing machine store just offered a pattern-making class based on Suzy Furrer’s book. I took it of course, and am on the verge of having my own sloper. So exciting! I’d love to get my hands on this book as well 🙂

Posted at 17:32h, 16 MarchBest of luck with the pattern drafting, I’ve just made my first sloper and made 2 tops out of it with generally good success. Very interested to know how you get on with the course, I self taught through a mix of YouTube videos and written instruction so unsurprisingly my sloper isn’t brilliant but definitely better fitting than off the shelf patterns.

Posted at 04:04h, 17 MarchThank you so much for introducing this on-line class to me and the book too. I am very interested in the class because where I live in NZ there are few (actually none that I know of) classes of a high calibre that focus on fit and the engineering of pattern drafting. Note that I’m saying ‘engineering’. Someone I know recently made an unflattering comment about sewing that stemmed from what I consider to be her own academic snobbiness. If that person knew how much planning, foresight, attention to detail, patience, skill, knowledge, and maths was involved in sewing and pattern drafting, she might not have been so dismissive. There are many sewists in our world who really are ‘fabric and design engineers’ in my opinion and that is something to be very proud of!. I think it’s great that there are sewing classes and books that help us all to improve our ‘engineering’ skills.

Posted at 09:31h, 17 MarchI don’t know if I’m too late for the book giveaway, but just wanted to say anyway that’s it’s kind and generous if you to offer it and also to bring it to our attention. There are just so many resources out there it’s sometimes difficult to cull them down to the essentials. I do love to learn about new books!

Posted at 10:57h, 17 MarchI hope I am not too late either! I would love to win this book! Thank you either way!

Posted at 12:32h, 17 MarchI know EXACTLY how you feel about fitting and how one small change affects the whole pattern. I’ve been trying to fit my muslin and every time I think I’ve gotten it, something else shifts. Love your blog!

Posted at 12:33h, 17 MarchI’ve lived a blessed life but not a lucky life. Is it possible that I could still win a drawing.? I refer to all my resources at some time. Blogs have expanded my interest and library. I’ll soon be a maill order sewist as my local and very large fabric store is going out of business.. May need more help than ever . Thanks for what you do.

Posted at 18:04h, 12 MarchI was excited to find your site! I have watched and rematched Suzy Furriers bodice sloper class many times! And I have purchased all her other classes. They really do work! She is a great teacher. For the first time in 40+ years of sewing I am getting fit right!
Its exciting to learn and perfect the craft!
