30 Jul A Sensible Top – Vogue 9771

Sensible. The opposite of exciting. I just returned from a real vacation, which for me means getting away in every respect. I often overestimate what I can accomplish in a certain time period, and the refashion I planned to do while away never happened. Determined to post a project from someplace other than my backyard, I packed my sewing supplies in my carry-on luggage. Oops. This meant I had to check my suitcase and  p a y  for my checked luggage carrying my scissors and seam ripper. I never looked at my sewing supplies. Then I paid another fee to fly my scissors and seam ripper...

04 Apr Style Arc Embellished

Since completing the “Kate Spade” dress last week I took a short break from the sewing machine and eased back in to the eighth month of sewing my clothes for a year with something super simple. For a moment I thought this project was so easy it didn’t deserve a post, but then I decided it certainly deserved a post just because it was so easy. After several successful experiences with Style Arc patterns, I placed another order which included the Diana top pattern.  The top would have taken one hour to make but I decided to add a neckline ruffle -...

19 Feb Austerity or Abundance?

I was at a social gathering over the weekend wearing my Red Ruffle Dress when a friend made reference to my year of "austerity". Now, everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion, but I thought this was an interesting choice of words for I’ve felt anything but austere. Based on some of the definitions and synonyms for austerity and austere, I suppose the word can be applied to my abstention from buying ready-to-wear clothing for a year. AUSTERITY 1. Economy measure 2. Severity or plainness 3. Enforced thrift AUSTERE 1. Suggesting physical hardship 2. Unsmiling 3. Plain and without luxury 4. Plain in style or design Sewing clothes rather than buying clothing...

21 Jan Ebony and Ivory

Some people are influenced by what they read. Some people are influenced by what they hear. And some people are influenced by what they see.  Since I started, over four months ago, sewing my clothes instead of buying my clothes for a year, I’ve become absolutely obsessed about my wardrobe. Even though I spent a fortune on clothes in the past, I never had an obsession about them. During the last four and a half months I have been abnormally aware of my visual surroundings, but only recently have I realized their impact on my life. While visiting NY in December, I lingered around the...

14 Jan MISSON(I) ACCOMPLISHED

It’s done. I love it, and I’m glad it’s over. My Missonish fabric has become a dress! It was one of those sewing projects that didn’t come together until the very end…. as in when I basted the hem in place. I glanced over nearly 100 reviews of this very popular Very Easy Vogue 8379 pattern on the Pattern Review website before retrieving it from my pattern stash. One promise I made to myself during this 365 day challenge is that I will not be in a hurry when I sew, and I dutifully made a muslin of the top before I cut the fabric...

06 Jan Reality Check

So excited to sew knits on my new machine I bought the following pattern. I love the simplicity of this little dress and decided to try it out with a rust cotton knit from my stash before cutting my new Missoni fabric. I wanted to create a simple prototype for the many knit dresses I will be making this year. Since the dress was described as close fitting I cut out the pattern two sizes larger than my measurements indicated, knowing it would be too big.  W R O N G  I could barely squeeze into this thing even with my industrial strength...

26 Nov The Big Ball

As promised I’m posting a picture of the group in full regalia! What? Why yes, of course the ruching above the knee is intentional. It’s really difficult to do you know……… In all seriousness, it was a great evening and well worth the $48.00 investment. Was the dress worth the investment of nearly three weeks?? And why is it that my greatest efforts of time and largest amount of money are devoted to special event attire? I’m looking forward to making clothes I can wear everyday again. Two weeks ago a friend told me that since I gave up shopping for a year and...
