03 Apr Saint James Knock Off

Knowing I can sew a garment for a tiny fraction of the retail price of a simply thrills me, and is one of the reasons I continue to sew. I knew I could make the $200 Saint James Toledo striped dress I saw in a boutique in Charlotte, but I didn't know that Mood Fabrics stocked Saint James knits ~ the very same fabrics! Upon finding Burda 6722, I knew it was meant to be. Described as a ponte, Mood offers the Saint James knits in several colors, and I chose the white background with black stripes. I rarely sew Burda patterns (no reason in...

26 Jul Garment No. 20, Burda 6769

The wind may be blowing my hair, but this skirt is not going anywhere :) Greetings from Edisto Beach, my favorite place to get away from it all. After completing Burda pattern 6769, I'm adding a new garment to my list of clothes I will never buy again ~ a jean skirt. In fact, I believe this is the most perfect skirt I've ever sewn. I'm not sure why I do not sew more Burda patterns because I've only experienced success with each one, especially with the fit. Note on the pattern illustration (lower right corner) the option to sew a straight or more fitted...

31 Dec The Kitchen Sink

Dear Readers ~ Many thanks for your enthusiastic responses to my last post! It was simply heartwarming to hear from you :) The end of the year roundup is not one of my favorite posts to write. I find it difficult to choose favorites with anything. I can’t name my favorite song, meal, movie, book or vacation spot, however I find it very important to review, reflect and learn from my experiences. Sewing during 2014 took on a life of its own with a second Ready-to-Wear Fast accompanied by a wedding. I bought nothing yet sewed fewer garments than I expected, which...

17 May Burda 7081

I’ve made friends with Burda and I’m all the better for it!  I was trying to convince myself that Burda patterns weren’t for me, but had a problem doing so. I really liked the looks of so many patterns! Was it me or was it Burda? In the end, it all came down to learning a new way of doing something. Learning to read and follow the Burda pattern was nothing like learning a new software program! It was more like driving a different route to a destination. I simply had to read the instructions s l o w l y  and carefully along...

27 Apr Twist and Shout

I planned on publishing a post with  F O U R  garments  and here I am with  O N E. …….. and it looks really easy doesn’t it?  Well, it wasn’t. I'm determined to master sewing casual clothes, but mistakenly I’ve confused c a s u a l  with  e a s y . After thumbing through a J Crew catalogue, I ordered four fabulous knits from Mood Fabrics' enormous collection with the plan of making four garments for casual wear. This was originally to be my Farmer’s Market dress; my toss-on dress for weekend errands. I searched for a casual dress pattern, designed for knits which...

08 Jan REDEMPTION

Do I  ever feel better! I wasn’t willing to go through the weekend agitated by my setback and got back to work,  but first things first. When I turned on my computer yesterday morning I knew immediately that  a positive experience had emerged from my unsuccessful New Look dress project. The kind  comments from my Goodbye Valentino followers and Pattern Review friends truly lifted my spirits sending me back to the sewing machine. Thank you so much – You are absolutely wonderful. As you can tell I wasn’t about to sew another too tight dress and erred on the side of generosity. I bought this...
