Bucket Hat Mania and Double Giveaway!

25 Jun Bucket Hat Mania and Double Giveaway!

It is a great pleasure to showcase the quality products of  Coats & Clark. Headquartered in the Carolinas with a distribution center 30 minutes from my home,  I was delighted to say yes to this long-established company, and will be writing a series of posts for its redesigned blog beginning on June 29.  Coats and Clark manufactures not only thread, but zippers and knitting accessories. It is also the parent company to Free Spirit Fabrics.

The company contacted me because I sew garments…… for myself…… but I have veered off course. Remember Birdie’s bucket hat?

It was like eating a potato chip.

I drove home from the beach and have been holed up in my sewing room playing with scraps and fat quarters.

Hello…..Hat Names-001Side II  BH 2 wrongCombo 1. …Right Side Out Flipped 2Combo 2….

Wrong Side Out FlippedEvery baby I know now needs a bucket hat regardless of my predominantly girly fabric collection!
In all seriousness, these little hats from Olivier + S are such fun to sew and the pattern is available as a free download here. The pattern is sized from Infant to 7 Years.

Baby gifts, party favors, team spirit, church bazaars, family photos, silent auctions etc… it’s an easy sew that puts a smile on faces. No pressure and no fitting complications 🙂

I began the hat venture with a lovely boxed set of  thread that includes many of my favorite colors.thread

The pattern consists of a crown, a side and a brim for each side of the hat.
IMG_5805 2

The directions are simple but should be followed carefully. The crown of the hat is stay-stitched and clipped up to the stitching before being attached to the sides. Clipping  prevents buckling and ensures a smooth, flat top.

IMG_5833Stitching around the top seam helps maintain its shape.

IMG_5839…and what a perfect opportunity to practice topstitching technique!

The Orange Blossom Special
Fabric: Verna Mosquera floral & paisley (courtesy of Free Spirit Fabrics)
The multi-color thread provided a subtle transition of color throughout the hat’s brim.

IMG_0055 2 Double click and note the ever-changing hues in the brim’s topstitching.

Under the Sea
Fabric: Embroidered seersucker and shirting which are scraps from last year’s Fourth of July dress. For a little pop, I added piping between the sides and brim. On the brim I pressed the shirting slightly over the edge to create the illusion of trim (bottom right). I liked the floppy look of the brim on this hat and did not topstitch.lobster

Unchained Melody
Fabric: Tunic Scraps! Cynthia Rowley broadcloth
This hat was so much fun to sew for many reasons. Since the hat is sewn from companion fabrics, I attached the contrasting fabrics together. When the brim is flipped the contrast disappears. I topstitched the brim with six rows of Coats and Clark Embroidery Thread in Kiwi. creating heavy rows along the brim. Due to the topstitching, the brim is very stiff.

Wild Thing
Fabric: Cotton Stretch Sateen and Cotton Shirting
The instructions call for interfacing only the brim, however, this hat is sewn from lightweight fashion fabric so I interfaced the hat below with Pellon EK130 Easy-Knit, a fusible knit interfacing and supple stabilizer resulting in a nicely shaped hat.

Wild Thing 2

My Girl
OK, this one’s for Birdie. I couldn’t resist asking a friend to monogram her initials in pink. This hat is also interfaced with Pellon EK130 Easy Knit helping the linen maintain its shape. It is the only hat that is not reversible and is lined in white linen.IMG_0044

Kokomo
Fabric: Amy Butler Quilting Cottons
Believe it or not, I discovered Amy Butler in 2008 on a trip to London. When I bought her book Midwest Modern at Liberty the sales clerk was appalled that I would travel to London and buy a book about an American fabric designer. I came home and ordered fat quarter bundles of all of her fabrics even though I was not quilting or sewing at that time. These fabrics are from the 2008 order.

Five rows of topstitching in aqua embroidery thread keep the brim stiff and provide a great contrast against the stripes.

I cut the brim on the bias so the stripes would be vertical when folded. Though it is technically reversible, I prefer the three looks below since the stripes don’t match perfectly.

This hat is very similar to the first hat I sewed for Birdie. Again the seersucker is pressed slightly over the brim to create the illusion of piping or trim.IMG_0059

Good Vibrations
Fabric: Verna Mosquera floral (courtesy of Free Spirit Fabrics)
I couldn’t resist sewing the dots to the paisley! For a little whimsy the brim is topstitched in four rows of green and two center rows of red embroidery threads 😉

I DID read the whole thing, and now I think I need to try this! I haven’t seen garments or much of anything other than quilts for ages, but your blog is really making me itch to get started on something different, and with your explanations, this looks simple enough for even me to do successfully. Thank you for showing all the variations, too. They make it even more tempting.

I’m too nostalgic to speak. When my daughter was an infant/toddler , I made her several bucket type hats. One particular outfit was little sunsuit/romper with the matching hat…white seersucker type fabric with tiny strawberries. This hat came with us when we moved from Boston to Naples. A favorite photo of her in her early 30’s is one wearing a true bucket hat on Nantucket gazing away in the glorious afternoon sun.: no make-up, hair straight from the ocean. My husband claims it is my favorite photo of her as it brings back those fun summer days. He’s right. Your hats are such fun! I used to make holiday themed scarves for dogs when our Golden was with us. I may now just play, play, play and make bucket hats for any little one that visits our community. And…I actually own lies gibson’s book “oliver + s little things to sew”. I can see me now passing out bucket hats to all the kids who visit during season. What a scream!!!🤗 Yours are fabulous..

I can’t believe I read the whole thing – TWICE and enjoyed the second reading as much as the first. Also, I can’t believe you made soooo many hats in the blink of an eye. I have two granddaughters, 7 and 3 who I take great pleasure in sewing items for. I’m getting the 7 year old interested in sewing, although she likes to go on my treadmill first. Both girls would love these hats, and who knows, one of them might even want to make one. Finally, the hats are beautiful.

She can use it this year as shade and next year to fit on her daughter’s head. I can’t wait to try to make one myself. Each and every one of your hats is so adorable, it is almost impossible to pick a favorite! I love roses so it probably would be La Vie en Rose, or maybe Orange Blossom Special, or . . . ! Each little hat is so special with the fabric combinations and obvious love and thought you put into them. Before I knew it, I had read the whole thing and could have read that many more!

Haha I can’t believe the timing of your post. I’ve recently finished another 2 of these bucket hats & am now sewing up 3 more, I love this pattern! I wondered about using embroidery thread but was a bit apprehensive as the stuff I have breaks really easily. I do rows of top stitching on the brim of all of mine as I love the way it looks. Yours are all lovely!

    Hi Sarah ,
Oh my gosh all those little hats are beautiful! My first grandchild was born just over a week ago , little Harry . Every time I hold him my heart just wants to pop with love . Thanks for sharing the hats as it is quite limited in what you can sew for a little boy (lol, although I’ve knitted him enough jerseys to last for years!) .
    Kind Regards

I have read the whole thing. Wonderful selection of colours and fabrics to match. I will be making these for granddaughter and grandson as it gets closer to summer here in the Southern Hemisphere. Right now I am making fabric shopping bags as give-aways as part of a Ban the Bag campaign. We still are allowed to use plastic shopping bags in our town and a group of us are working to get them banned. One of our strategies is to provide lots and lots of fabric bags for free.

I have made this hat a number of times, but for myself and friends, not children! The larger size fits absolutely perfect, and its great to make your own as you can match to your outfit. When buying hats from stores, the size is so uncertain, so i would recommend this pattern to anyone wanting to have a go at hat making. its very easy, and very satisfying. I love some of your colour combinations. Whew this post is almost as long as yours! Sorry

How cute—and Smart!! All, little ones especially, should have a hat in the summer!! My new great nephew might benefit as he lives in Myrtle Beach, and this will be a good way to get sewing again!! Thanks for the hints and fabric ideas!
