A New Giveaway and Demo!

27 Oct A New Giveaway and Demo!

“DRAPING is the term for using fabric to create a design directly on a mannequin or dress form. It is an essential skill for a fashion designer.”
_________________

As in almost every subject, the possibilities for learning and growing are endless. Sometimes I think the more I sew the less I know, but the good news is that can easily change 🙂

I have always associated draping with ancient Athenian clothing until yesterday upon opening a package from Laurence King Publishing.
I was asked to promote an upcoming class in New York led by Karolyn Kiissel, author of DRAPING, The Complete Course. Laurence King Publishing was kind enough to send me her book as well.

Draping

I hardly know where to begin……….. The book is a 320-page work of art complete with a video featuring 32 tutorials.
After a thorough introduction, the student is led through the progressive stages of draping, each complete with a series of exercises and stylish projects.

Yoke skirts, a Christian Lacroix bustier, blouses, gowns, bias draping, Audrey Hepburn’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s dress, Nanette Lepore cropped pants are just a few of the garment projects.

While I have not opened the DVD, I have browsed each chapter of this beautiful book illustrated with 1200 color photographs of instructions and finished projects.

Draping1

Would you believe one of the projects is a fitted tunic ? 😉

I am enlightened. I am also giving this book away to one lucky winner!

Please leave a comment if you would like to be entered in the random giveaway. The winner will be announced on Friday, October 31.

But there is more.
Karolyn Kiisel will be in New York offering a free lecture/demo on November 4. All of the details are included in the photo below.
LYL_KFAD02_Kiisel-01

How fun will this be?

I would love to hear from readers who attend this fabulous event!
Many thanks to Laurence King Publishing and good luck to all in the giveaway 🙂

Would love this book! I have taken to recreating a garment from an existing one, and would love to learn to do this instead! I have to say that I’ve found Stylearc patterns to be the only ones I can depend on for correct sizing

I would love to win this book. Draping is something I would like to learn although I have been sewing many years. I am like you the more I learn the less I realize I know. I think that is what keeps me interested, plus the chance to create. By the way, you have inspired me to make a tunic. I, too, am taking the Bodice Patternmaker class from Craftsy and I thought a tunic would be my first project. I am anxious to see what you come up with!

    Hi Sarah,
How I would love to win this book! The “wadder” hanging in my sewing closet looks beautiful on the hanger. Perhaps this book could help me figure out which grain line I should have used for the cowl neck blouse. The drape of the cowl neck is beautiful, but the blouse is WAY too small……..then again, perhaps it was not a grain line issue, but a “knit” issue.

I’m 5’0″ and would love to learn how to drape for a petite. It is so difficult buying clothing off the rack and pattern alteration is a mind-boggling experience. As an ardent fan of Project Runway, I see that draping appears to be the method of choice for fashion apparel creation. Thank you for your offer.

I discovered this fabulous resource during my sleeve drafting quest this summer. It is the best draping book I have ever seen. Although drafting a three piece sleeve isn’t covered, the info in this is invaluable to anyone wanting expert instruction. Work you way through it. Even if you don’t want to drape every garment from scratch, you’ll understand how to perfect the fit on patterns.
I would be interested to know if your DVD plays on a US player. Mine is in PAL format and needs a region free player to view it. Also it would be nice if there was a way to let the entire DVD play without needing to select each chapter.
Good luck to everyone in the drawing. The lucky will winner will LOVE this.

I love learning a new sewing term, draping. It reminds me of when my mother would drag her four daughters through the fabric department at Sears or Marshall Fields and tell us that one of the fabrics had a good hand. Of course we giggled about it then but none of us ever forgot what that means.
Sewing has stayed in my blood for many years and I’m so happy to find someone out there who also loves it!

This book, with dvd would be a fantastic opportunity to read, watch and learn from this talented lady. Living in rurual Lincolnshire ( UK) with no sewing classes, or even sewing stores means my way of learning more, is indeed through books, on line classes etc.

How I would adore this book and the chance to add more skills. As my Mother would have said, you are never too old to learn new skills.

It looks like an amazing book! And it’s so true, the more I sew, I realise that I know so little and there’s a lot to learn to improve my sewing. The page you have shown about grain explains so much more than what I’ve read. I’ve always felt my sleeves stick out wrong, but I didn’t know why, I’ve been reading up about sleeves and learned that in order to get the kind of sleeves I want. the crossgrain has to be to be parallel to the floor instead of being tilted at an angle. Now the next thing is to figure out how to draft my sleeves so that they will fall the way I want.

I’d love a copy of this book to add to my ever growing library. Good for us !

Sarah, I would love to be included the huge group of people interested in this book. I have followed you from the start and you have been the driving force in my getting back into sewing. Unfortunately, most of my projects have fallen into the same avenue as your tunic. I still have the goal of a perfect tunic. I have taken the Craftsy Bodice Sloper class and it is by far the best Craftsy class I have taken. However, I hope you will share some of your wonderful wisdom and help ALL of us to apply the wonderful information to our patterns. Thank you for what you have done for the sewing world!

I would love to win the book! I am a long time seamstress but only aspire to such skills as Karolyn!

I have enjoyed reading Goodbye Valentino and am so glad I ran into you while “googling” Lilly Pullitzer and sewing. Your wonderful redo of your daughters Lilly dress to a skirt was an aha moment. I teach children and teens sewing classes and your blog/website has been so inspirational. My students would ask me if I made the clothing I wore and I rarely sewed for myself. Now, due to your own challenge to yourself, I was inspired to sew for myself!

Keep up the wonderful work you do!
