17 May Burda 7081
I’ve made friends with Burda and I’m all the better for it!
I was trying to convince myself that Burda patterns weren’t for me, but had a problem doing so. I really liked the looks of so many patterns!
Was it me or was it Burda?
In the end, it all came down to learning a new way of doing something.
Learning to read and follow the Burda pattern was nothing like learning a new software program! It was more like driving a different route to a destination. I simply had to read the instructions s l o w l y and carefully along the way. Unlike my last Burda pattern, I could easily sew a muslin with woven fabric, make a few adjustments and get a feel for the particulars.
The pattern, Burda 7081 has summer written all over it and the cotton print with stretch is from Aunt Maggie’s surprise box – a perfect summer weight.
I was attracted to the flattering neckline created by the front yoke pieces seen below.
Both the front and back yokes produce a nice flat upper bodice with no gaping whatsoever!
I even took the time to make the kick pleat.
The dress is fully lined. I generally find lining sleeveless tops and dresses a little tricky but with this pattern, the front yokes were lined, turned and basted to the upper bodice. The dress lining was then assembled, attached and turned, leaving only the shoulders to be sewn together. Rather than sewing an awkward continuous seam, the front and back were stitched together through three layers – the fashion fabric and the front yoke lining. The lining of the back yoke had been turned under and pressed and the seam was neatly tucked into the opening and slipstitched. I hope I can apply this technique to future sleeveless sewing projects!
I suppose there is a moral to this story somewhere, but I’m just happy to be over the Burda hump, and greeting the weekend with a fun, new dress 🙂

Posted at 08:02h, 17 MayWhat a lovely summer dress!

Posted at 18:48h, 17 MayThank you, Irene! I’m sure I’ll enjoy wearing it.
Becky
Posted at 08:13h, 17 MayAs always, you inspire me. I, too, have avoided Burda even though I like the look of many things. Maybe I will try to learn Burda after this post, maybe….. What did you find to be the greatest differences from other commercial patterns? I love this dress! It looks great on you, and I especially like the portrait frame created by the bodice construction. Lovely, just lovely!
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 18:54h, 17 MayThank you so much, Becky! I understand some Burda patterns come without seam lines but this one included the seam lines. I find the biggest difference is that the seams are numbered. I’m sure this helps many people but I get slightly confused. There are not as many diagrams, and reassuring phrases like “sewing through all of the thickness” are missing – which makes me question myself. No handholding for sure! But if you read carefully you’ll find a thoroughly instructed pattern. Good luck!

Posted at 08:20h, 17 MayRunning out the door (rushing, as usual) but had to stop to read and comment. You have such an uncanny ability to find these hidden gem patterns that don’t get much attention. Another smashing success of a dress. I’ve tried one or two Burda patterns and agree- they are almost like learning another language to me. Their unique styles make it worth it, though. Can’t wait to see what else is in that magic box from Aunt Maggie!!
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 18:56h, 17 MayMany thanks, Julie! I have a few more Burda patterns myself. I believe what made this one easier was that I made the muslin a couple of weeks ago and was basically able to cut and sew 🙂
Marie Mander
Posted at 08:21h, 17 MayIt looks stunning and a very good fit, my problem is the fitting, do you think a dressmakers dummy would help? Thank you for sharing.
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 18:57h, 17 MayThank you, Marie! I have an old dummy that doesn’t represent me very well so it’s not a big help but I’m sure a good dress form would be a fabulous asset.
Vivian
Posted at 08:21h, 17 MayDarn, that’s one cute dress! The fabric allows it to be worn with sandals for a casual ladies luncheon or dressed up with heals for a dressier event. And all the accessories that can be worn with it. I’d say it’s the perfect summer dress!
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 18:58h, 17 MayThanks, Vivian! I hope to do all of the above 🙂 🙂

Posted at 08:35h, 17 MayThat dress is fantastic and fits you beautifully! A Burda pattern was my first sewing dud. I simply couldn’t get the waist to hip ratio to work although I loved the neckline. Are you planning on reviewing this pattern? Would love to know more about how you did it 🙂
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 18:59h, 17 MayHi Lisa! I made a muslin and had to shorten the waist to hip ratio myself. After I pinned the muslin I made adjustments on the pattern 🙂 Good luck!
Awilda
Posted at 08:47h, 17 MayI agree with all the ladies, this is indeed a lovely dress and has a great fit. My problem is the fitting like Marie.. I’ve never tackled a Burda dress but I will definitely consider trying one.
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 19:02h, 17 MayThank you, Awilda! Perhaps you could start with a style you’re comfortable with. I can hardly believe I started with a twist top pattern 😉 I should have known better!

Posted at 08:50h, 17 MayOops! Just read the review. Thanks!

Posted at 08:54h, 17 MayLove your dress. I only use Burda patterns. I started a subscription in 2009 and haven’t looked back. Budra patterns fit me better than the big 4.
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 19:03h, 17 MayOh wow, Kathi! I’m completely impressed 🙂 I’ll keep at it and hopefully become more comfortable one of these days !

Posted at 08:54h, 17 MayVery, very cute and summery. You are inspiring a lot of us to revisit Burda, thanks!

Posted at 09:09h, 17 MayYou really rock a sheath dress! This particular one looks fabulous. Love the neckline.

Posted at 19:05h, 17 MayMany thanks, Marguerite! I do love fitted sheaths and I agree this neckline is a winner 🙂

Posted at 09:12h, 17 MayVery nice indeed! I think I would have passed it by, going from the images on the pattern, but your’s is really eye-catching! And you’re right – summer, all over it!
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 19:07h, 17 MayMany thanks, Barbara! I have finally learned to look at the drawing even if I’m not crazy about the photo or illustration. What a difference 🙂
CherryPix
Posted at 09:15h, 17 MayWelcome to the wonderful world of Burda….the styles are generally more on trend, I think…and they are generally well drafted. Worth the effort of tracing/deciphering! You look very fresh – lovely fit and style, as always!
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 19:08h, 17 MayThank you so much , Cherry Pix!! I totally agree with you about the design and appeal of Burda patterns. I hope to reach a comfort level one of these days 🙂

Posted at 09:15h, 17 MayThat’s so cute! What a great pattern – and the result is an incredibly versatile dress that looks terrific on you 🙂 I’ve looked at Burda – and even own a couple patterns – but haven’t sewn anything (actually, since our house is on the market, I haven’t sewn anything period, but that’s about to change as I rebel against this confinement!)
Your post might just be the push I needed to try out those Burdas!
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 19:10h, 17 MayHi Cheryl! What a pain to have a house on the market. Of course you’re not sewing! Many thanks for the nice comment 🙂

Posted at 09:56h, 17 MayBeautiful dress and so flattering on you. I keep looking at Burda patterns, but haven’t made the commitment yet. I’m ready to try my first “Style Arc” pattern based on your blog.

Posted at 19:11h, 17 MayThank you, Yyyz Girl! You’re going to love Style Arc patterns. Good luck!
Iryna
Posted at 10:30h, 17 MayI’ve learned to sew with Burda patterns and for me it was strange to switch to American patterns though! I like adding my own seam allowances. I am glad it worked for you and the dress is beautiful!

Posted at 08:20h, 18 MaySuch a good point you made, Iryna! It’s just what we get accustomed to. Many thanks for writing!

Posted at 11:13h, 17 MayWell, well, well…look who just boarded the Burda train! How cute is this dress? Love the neckline and bodice shaping. Next thing you know you’ll be tracing a Burda Style and feeling all smart and sassy. Order one of Claire’s seam allowance rulers first, though.
Also, PR’s big weekend is in Austin next year. You must come!
;D

Posted at 08:26h, 18 MayI suppose I am on board! Austin sounds fab – thanks for the heads up and I may try to do this 🙂

Cennetta
Posted at 11:31h, 17 MayGreat summer dress. Thanks for sharing the details. It looks cool and crisp. Burda does have some great styles and interesting design lines in the garments. This one is certainly a winner.
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 08:29h, 18 MayThank you, Cennetta! Something tells me I’ve only just begun 🙂
Hoosiermama
Posted at 11:45h, 17 MayWondering what you lined it with, since the fashion fabric is stretchy? (It look terrific, by the way.)
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 08:31h, 18 MayThank you! I looked for ways to avoid a lining, but in the end I’m glad it’s lined. The fabric isn’t stretchy like a knit – just has some stretch to it. Anyhow I lined it with polyester lining.

Posted at 11:51h, 17 MayI love it! GREAT fit and perfect fabric for showing off lots of different accessories. You need to make more of these!

Posted at 08:32h, 18 MayThanks so much, Amanda! I hope to make more 🙂
Cindy
Posted at 12:24h, 17 MayAnother smashing success! Your fitting skills are to die for. You really have the gift of being able to pair patterns that make timeless, arresting garments having good, clean lines and flattering necklines together with beautiful fabrics that won’t age too soon. So beautiful!

Posted at 08:33h, 18 MayWhat a lovely comment, Cindy! It is a goal of mine to make clothes that I’ll enjoy wearing for a while. Many thanks for writing 🙂 🙂

Joen
Posted at 14:58h, 17 MayYes I too have not yet ventured into sewing a Burda pattern, not sure why I find them intimidating. However after seeing your lovely dress with such beautiful details you may have inspired me to give it a go!
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 08:40h, 18 MayGo for it Joen! You’ll do just fine 🙂
Myra
Posted at 15:29h, 17 May…and a beautiful dress too! This is stunning on you! I love everything about it! Great job in concurring that hurdle!

Posted at 16:11h, 17 MayI am always drawn to Burda patterns. I think they’re just a bit more fashion forward and edgy….especially nice coats as far as style and selection. I have to laugh at every one of my Burda Pattern Reviews, which pretty much state ,”Well, you know how Burda is…you better know basic construction and be a problem solver!”
Your dress is fabulous. I really, really like it.
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 08:49h, 18 MayThank you so much! I agree that Burda patterns certainly have the style advantage – hopefully I’ll reach a comfort level with them before long 🙂

Posted at 19:23h, 17 MayGreat fabric and a very flattering shape on you. I’m a bit scared of Burda and their instructions so haven’t taken the plunge. This gives me a little bit of confidence though.

Posted at 08:51h, 18 MayYou can do it! Many thanks for writing 🙂

Posted at 21:39h, 17 MayWonderful fit on this dress! It looks like it will be a fun dress to “accessorize” in a variety of ways, too. I’ve never sewn with Burda, but your experience is encouraging to me!

Posted at 08:57h, 18 MayBurda will be a piece of cake to someone with your sewing skills, Karen! Many thanks for writing!

Posted at 21:42h, 17 MayOH MY GOSH Sarah. This is REALLY inspiring. My son has moved out and I will be turning his room into my sewing room So I have a really long to do list and this may be one of them. Beautiful work.

Posted at 21:59h, 17 MayYou look so great in dresses – all styles! They always fit so beautifully! So envious -making the McCall’s basic and fitted to my measurements, it looks like I swallowed a watermelon and it’s sitting there sideways – very attractive. Going to Mulberry Silk tomorrow for a 3 day Sandra Betzina workshop. Can hardly wait. Maybe she will know what to do with the sideways watermelon- sitting on 2 toothpicks – held up by size 11 shoes!
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 09:01h, 18 MayDon’t say that about yourself! …… Sewing lets us make clothes to compliment our shapes unlike RTW which usually makes me feel like there’s something wrong with me. Have fun and the workshop and many thanks for writing!
Lori
Posted at 22:35h, 17 MayThat looks wonderful on you, Sarah. A whole new Burda world is open to you now!

Cissie Wellons
Posted at 08:43h, 18 MayCan’t remember, Sarah, if I commented before or not. But I LOVE this dress on you! Perfect fit and very flattering design. I might just have to add this to my ever-growing pattern stash. As someone else said, now that you have conquered Burda patterns, you are ready for those in the magazine!! Talk about no hand-holding! But then again, StyleArc doesn’t hold your hand either — and you love those patterns!
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 09:05h, 18 MayHi Cissie! ….not quite ready for those patterns in the magazine 😉 You would look lovely in this dress!
I do love the fit of Style Arc but the patterns I’ve used are pretty simple ones. Why I started with a Burda twist top pattern, I’ll never know but hopefully I’m on the right track now. Many thanks for writing!
The Renegade Seamstress
Posted at 11:24h, 18 MayOK, could you BE any cuter???? This is such a flattering style on you. I’ve been eyeing the Burda patterns for awhile now, but haven’t been brave enough to take the plunge. Your post has brought me a little bit closer to possibly trying one out this summer. Have a wonderful weekend!
Beth

Posted at 08:28h, 19 MayThanks,Beth! If you can make a cute dress out of a tablecloth, then you can sew a Burda pattern! Can’t wait to see yours 🙂

Posted at 21:31h, 18 MayThe dress looks so fabulous on you!!! Have you taken the plunge with digital Burda patterns? I have two sitting in my folder that I am a bit reserved to try since my Burda wedding dress experience. I think I will take them out and give it a try! Burda does have very nice pattern styles.
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 08:34h, 19 MayThank you, Deborah! I have yet to try a digital pattern of any sort yet, but plan to one of these days. 🙂
Gjeometry
Posted at 00:23h, 19 MaySuch a beautiful dress! I also find Burda patterns VERY difficult to understand. I am a new sewist and even my sewing teacher has found errors and problems with steps being left out in the instructions. Not a beginners friend, for sure.
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 08:37h, 19 MayThank you so much, Gjeometry! I’d love to have a sewing teacher help me through a Burda pattern 😉 This one I managed nicely, but I sure could have used a teacher with the previous Burda.
Gjeometry
Posted at 17:24h, 20 MayYes. I would have gouged my eyes out long before now if I did not have help. 😛
Nay
Posted at 02:05h, 19 MayYou look great! I think I’ve already ranted about how poor Burda instructions are, so I won’t do it again! Did you fit/tailor the pattern to your measurements or just used the standard pattern?
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 08:39h, 19 MayThank you, Nay! I used the standard pattern and shortened the bodice 2 inches at the upper alteration line indicated on the pattern. Otherwise the pattern fit very nicely and that was a B I G relief!

Posted at 07:02h, 19 MayLove this dress, the neckline is gorgeous, beautiful new summer dress!

Posted at 08:16h, 19 MayI always loved Burda, a lot of my life-long favourites are Burda patterns. I think they have the best fit out of the envelope for a European figure type. Your dress is just stunning!
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 14:16h, 20 MayThank you, Carolyn! My hope is to reach a comfort level with these patterns before long. 🙂

Posted at 11:55h, 19 MayWhat a gorgeous dress! I really love the combination of the fabric and the model of the dress. The fabric is not too busy so you can appreciate the details of the dress and the dress is not to frilly with a beautiful neckline but you can still focus to appreciate the fabric. I have sewn a couple of Burda-patterns and some fit and some are just way off… Really weird! In my sewing classes I used only Burda patterns but now I also buy the big 4 and indie patterns and almost never buy the Burda magazine… In a couple of years I might switch back…
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 14:17h, 20 MayThank you, Wendy for this nice comment! I would imagine Burda patterns to be a great choice to use in sewing classes!

Posted at 09:49h, 20 MayGorgeous!!! This fits you like a dream! The neckline really is flattering and it doesn’t have any of the gaping that you something see on dresses with a neckline that cuts straight across above the bust. Great job! Now there’s a whole new world open to you!

Posted at 14:22h, 20 MayThank you! ……..This might be a new solar system I’ve entered 😉

Posted at 15:40h, 21 MayWhat a lovely dress, perfectly suited to your figure. I want to say how much I enjoyed finding your blog and the concept of a RTW diet. I’m not sure I’m ready to make such a drastic commitment, but I have definitely been inspired to stay away from the mall and spend more time at the sewing machine! Winter might be a challenge since I live in ribbed turtlenecks!
Happy Sewing.

Susan
And now the horrible Translation with online-Translator:
“A very beautiful dress, both cut and the material please me very good. I am German and subscribed “Burdastyle”. The pattern please me that often refined are and moreover one gets for little money many patterns. I am 1,68m large, therefore a standard size according to measure table. Nevertheless the parts are often too long and especially the front-neckline is in Burda often much too deep. Sincere greetings, Susan”

Posted at 10:24h, 29 MayHi Sarah,
I have found your blog to be my inspiration to get back to garment sewing. Your clothing is beautiful and the fit is perfect. Could you make a suggestion for books, online classes, etc, to achieve your perfect fit?
goodbyevalentino
Posted at 21:52h, 29 MayThank you for this nice comment, Jackie! There has been lots of trial and error going on with me over the last 20 months or so 🙂
I believe the secret to a good fit is sewing a muslin first. Having said that, I found the Sewing Workshop on Craftsy to be an excellent resource for getting the perfect pencil skirt result.
Susan Khalje’s Couture Dress Craftsy class was worth the time and money as I learned so much about sewing an fitting and though the dress takes forever to make, it is uncomplicated. Lynda Maynard’s Sew the Perfect Fit was extremely helpful too.
The other thing I’ve learned is the more you sew the easier it is to fit.
Many thanks for writing. I’m inspired to learn I’ve inspired you 😉

Posted at 13:37h, 09 JuneI apologize for the change of subject but I am desperately looking for the Simplicity 2585 tunic dress pattern. It is discontinued and usually it can be found online but I have had no luck in finding one. I was hoping if any of the bloggers have a pattern they will sell or allow me to rent or copy for me I will gladly pay for it. Thank you, Fara

Posted at 07:27h, 12 JuneHi Fara,
I’m sorry you’re having such difficulty in locating this pattern. On my next post I’ll put the word out for you. My pattern is cut into different sizes and marked all over the place plus I may sew it again soon. Good luck and I’ll try to help 🙂

Posted at 05:34h, 15 JuneI loved this dress so much I immediately ordered the pattern! Really gorgeous dress. Would you say that it’s imperative to use stretch fabric or do you think I could get away with non stretch cotton ( if I muslin first)?
Goodbye Valentino
Posted at 07:01h, 15 JuneHi Windy! The pattern does not call for stretch fabric. This cotton just happened to be a woven stretch. Good luck with your dress and many thanks for writing!
