LAST WINTER DRESS

Mardi Gras, anyone?

Tonight I’m attending a Mardi Gras carnival that serves as a fundraiser for the Healing Arts program in my community. Last year was our first annual Mardi Gras carnival and I wore a brown and black dress.

Yuk.

Why would I show up in brown and black when most people were in costumes or festive Mardi Gras colors? Possibly because I’ve been attending pancake suppers through the years and didn’t know what to wear, or else I just didn’t have anything to wear.

This year I made a purple dress using this New Look pattern.

I was hesitant about sewing another New Look pattern after this, but the dress on the pattern cover was so cute I couldn’t resist! I’m hoping this was a mishap because New Look has released several good-looking patterns for Spring that I can’t wait to try!

The dress is actually sewn in a plum wool jersey blend that I ordered from Mood Fabrics. By the time I add a few Mardi Gras beads and accessories, I think I’ll be festively dressed and it sure beats what I wore last year!

Wait, what? You not know what to wear? I don’t believe it- you always look perfect! This dress is no exception!

  2. It’s true. I showed up in brown and black and looked like I was going to a funeral instead of a Mardi Gras carnival. I really got it wrong :(

Hi Sarah, I have just discovered your blog after seeing some photos you posted on Sew Weekly, something I have also recently discovered. I just wanted to leave a comment telling you how much I love the clothes you are making and how fabulous you always look. I love the idea of your years long challenge, surely a very difficult thing to do!

Have to agree. “This” was super-horrible. But we’ve all got at least one “this” to our credit.

Gorgeous dess and love any dress with a cross over bodice…. great color too.

  6. Thank you, Sheila – I feel another dress from this pattern coming on……. I love your blog!

    Another great dress! A. Maggie

    • Thanks, Maggie! This was an easy one to construct and the fabric was great to work with. I didn’t have enough fabric to make the belt and will look for one, though I didn’t need one last night with all of the Mardi Gras stuff.

  8. Oh I like it. Very glad you have moved on from black and brown ….. lordy!

That’s a great dress, really good colour on you too. I am thinking of little else other than spring. It is now light in London at 6 p.m. and yesterday it was warm which made it feel like spring is really around the corner, the snowdrops are all out and the daffodils have come out this week. Hyde Park looks beautiful. I have cut out three dresses and am looking forward to a week-end of selfish sewing.

You look very chic. What a lovely plummy colour! And that necklace is the perfect accessory for that lovely deep flattering neckline!

I had to have NL6097 and purchased it this weekend… Thanks for the inspiration.

I love the dress, but even more, the necklace! Where is it from?
I’ve actually been thinking about buying this pattern, I might have to now.

    • Hi Allison!
I found the necklace at a Kate Spade outlet in Palm Springs, CA. It was 70% off of the retail price :) I wasn’t sure how much I’d wear a purple necklace but I’m finding or creating lots of opportunities to do so. I’m not sure if the outlets have a website but it would be worth checking out! At the time I was there, the necklaces were in other colors as well.
