Matronly Makeover

Is this not one of the most matronly looking suits you have ever seen?

YUK

When my husband walked in and saw this he thought it was a service uniform…  Years ago I bought a beautiful Ralph Lauren black suit which I wore until it was thread bare. When it came time to replace it I could not find anything close to it in my price range. I didn’t have an office job anymore and couldn’t justify the splurge, so I bought this suit from Talbots.

That was four years ago and I have worn it once.  I felt so old and ugly in it after I wore it that one day, that I put it in the back of my closet.

Well, here it is now……… I shortened the skirt three inches and cut away the flare on the sides.  It’s not the Ralph Lauren suit I once had, but the new silhouette is far more flattering on me and I can wear the skirt with some of my favorite tops now.  Believe it or not, I didn’t own a basic black wool skirt….

I’m glad I found your blog via PatternReview.com. I will be going through my fabric stash and closet with a new eye! Thank you for sharing….your work is inspiring!

Whenever my mother and I buy Talbots blazers or jackets, the first thing we do is run out and buy new buttons. Your tailoring has given the suit new life!

    • Thank you so much for your nice comments. This suit should have the buttons replaced too! It is amazing how a slight alteration can completely change a piece of clothing, and I am enjoying bringing a new look to some pieces I thought I’d never wear and/or never wear again.
